Do you need an affidavit and solicitor stamp on your settlement visa to the uk ?

At present I have a 99% completed folder, application. The area seems grey
on everybody I spoken to that say you have to swear an affidavit and get a stamp
from a solicitor on the invitation letter...

I have used a notarized template and entered my partners details,I got a solicitor
to sign and stamp this yesterday, but no affidavit.

I have spoken to several solicitors who are all telling me I do not need
this paper unless I am planning on getting married abroad (which I am not)

I copied a notarized letter inviting my partner to come to the U.K and get married
    within six month's.

The local solicitor told me she could stamp and sign this paper that I prepared (for £5)
but she confirmed she knew nothing about immigration law.

I phoned the British Embassy in the U.K and they told me that I should
phone the British embassy in Thailand... They told me they cannot assist with
    visa questions.

The local registra have told me they do not offer proof of single status unless
you are marrying abroad and the best they could offer would be a letter that
confirm's I have never been married according to their records .(This does not include the last 18months as there is a back log in their office)
    ....So it's pointless.

This cloak and dagger game is becoming tiresome.

So the affadavit you wanted signed is to say your single? That is only needed if you are getting married in Thailand, you do not need it if you are getting married in your home country.

If it is notarised then it is official. Your lawyer doesn't know whether the template is correct though due to immigration not being her field.

These letters do not have to be notarized. Essentially, it should be clear from the invitation why the person is being invited, by whom, for how long, how they will be supported and where they will stay.
