Day trip to Vientianne fron Nongkhai - visa, entry / exit charges?

Hi TDers. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect if I want to travel to Vientianne for a day trip (over the Nonhkai river crossing). I'll be in LOS on a tourist visa (Aussie passport). I think I read somewhere that you could save time and money by arranging a visa in Khon Kean - can anyone confirm? What will the Thai government charge?

    Thanks in Advance

If you go to Laos your entry visa will be 1500 baht.
Obtained from the office on the far left as you arrive at the Laos border crossing.
Getting back into Thailand will be free, but you will only get 15 day.
OR, stay in Laos a couple of days.
Go to the Thai consulate in the morning with 2 pic and apply for a 60 day double entry tourist visa.
Go back next day at 13.00 to collect visa.
    Cost nothing.
Falling asleep and waking up is not the same as passing out and coming to.

Can chop around 500 baht off that if you pay in U.S dollars.

    ^Very legal.
The price for a visa is 1500 baht or 30 dollars for Aussies (35 for Brits and Yanks).

Link if you don't believe me.

Just got back two weeks ago, $30 US for an Aussie, took all of 5 minutes to get a visa at the border, best tip is to try and get a private bus not the jam packed public bus that hauls you across the river.

    No probs Bazzy.
Pay your 30 dollars. Go through immigration jump on the shitty bus for 20 baht or so across the river into Laos then you will get accosted by the touts with the shit taxis and vans.
Say yes to a shitty taxi and pay 100baht to get anywhere near the centre of Vientiane.
It's only 18-20km away so will be sipping a beer in no time.
    Enjoy the trip.

Bus is about 500 one way.
Fly is obviously quicker but disproportionately expensive.
Remember it take two days in Laos to get your visa, which you will have by about 2 pm on the second day. 200 baht will pay for a tuk tuk back to the bridge from the consulate.

    What about the train?
Can you get one from Patters to Nong Khai?
