I put in for my second double entry tourist visa from Laos yesterday, I have to (hopefully) go and collect my passport with visa in about 30 mins, they have a notice up about this new screening process and was told that I may require an interview today to decide if I qualify for the visa.

The message seems fairly clear to me, if you are staying long term and not working, not married and are under 50 then you should be on a non immigrant type O, obtained in your home country. Seems reasonable enough to me.

Why would they need a work permit? Ahhh, your assuming as per usual that people under 50 living in Thailand must be working illegally, daffy, maybe its actually time you came to Thailand and spent some time here getting to know people that either live here or spend long periods of time here on tourists visas who actually have an income from their own country and don't want to marry a Thai national.

Non-Immigrant Visa O is Suitable For:

    • Foreign nationals who wish to stay with the family, perform duties for the state enterprise or social welfare organizations in Thailand
    • Foreign nationals who wish to stay after their retirement or receive medical treatment in Thailand
    • Foreign nationals who wish to be a sport coach as required by Thai government
    • Foreign nationals who wish to be a contestant/witness for the judicial process in Thailand

Pretend to be a witness is some drawn out case, maybe one against a police officer (taking the police officer's side of course), they just go on and on.

Non-O visas for the next 20 years.

Thanks EN, that must be very good news for the ones who are in the tourist visa situation, it is always best to get feedback from someone who have actually been there and gone through the motions.

    a) You're not average tourists
    b) procure yourself a proper visa before you leave your home country.

    This isn't rocket science.

AND! I have spent in the last year more than 2 life times of Thai middle class wages. Dumb Thai government. No wonder the country is skint.

I would think these so called dodgy freeloaders are making a major contribution to the carnival country

    Hanging out. Chilling. Enjoying themselves.
    That's what tourists do.

Come on, this isn't rocket science (a vastly over-rated and fairly simple subject), unless you're an uptight hysterical old women with a suspiciously camp posting style.

So I will ask again, what is the proper visa for non working unmarried under 50's who wish to stay in Thailand for any length of time?

Non O multiple entry, which you typically can obtain only in your home country at the Thai embassy there, it involves a check of your criminal record and you must prove a decent regular income from outside Thailand like a pension, some country's Thai embassy's give 1 year and others give only 6 month at a time, every 90 days you have to leave Thailand and pr. every 90 days you can get 30 days extension + 7 days, so in reality a 1 year multiple entry non O visa would give you around 16-17 months in Thailand.

This visa does prohibit you from working in Thailand.

That is how it worked for me before I got my retirement extension.
