Why does your wife need to be with you for a retirement extension?
If you have the papers you will get it, with or without her.
HH, can't answer the specific question as it always depends on the IO - but... if the extension is based on "retirement" it should not require accompaniment by your wife. I always bring the better half because the IOs are more comfortable speaking to a Thai. Less communication errors. Bring copies of her ID card and blue book, signed by her, to cover all bases.
Be aware, if you are using the lump sum deposit (THB 800k) - there is talk of some IOs requiring an annual bank statement to prove that the balance did not fall below the minimum requirement of THB 400k year round.
Good luck.
I'll be doing the rigmarole dance next month in Nonthaburi.

...just finished my retirement extension at CW. I had copies of everything + bank documents, but they wanted to study my bankbook. Also, I booked an appointment for 9:30am online...I showed up at the correct window at 9am expecting to wait, but was seen to immediately...Unfortunately, I had to wait over an hour for my documents to be returned...
Majestically enthroned amid the vulgar herd
I have attended with and without the wingman. Assuming everything submitted is in accordance with the rules it shouldn't make any difference but I sense the IO is more comfortable with dealing with my wife and if it is a female officer, they generally are, they might have a bit of a chat and I can be ignored completely which suits me fine.
a signed copy of the blue book, her id card, marriage certificate which is a bit worn out after 33yrs.and just in case a couple of bht.notes.after last yrs.performance with a rogue new officer [who was kicked out] the past io's who passed my extension were all wrong, the bank manager was wrong and was called NO GOOD,normally in and out in less than a hour,it took 5hrs.with a bank employee having to come from the mall to deliver what she said was wanted.so hpoeing this time all is fine. [dec.] done my 90day report yesyerday 9am.with not a sole in sight.
Dealing with a moron is simply just another stone in the road in maintaining residence in this country. It's a shame of course that someone who has been lawfully resident here for such a length of time, a period that would qualify one for permanent residence in most other countries, has to jump through hoops annually that often alter in size and shape according to whim, stupidity or plain malice.
I can well understand how it might be a more attractive policy for those geriatrics who live a quiet and peaceful life in Bangkok and have no intention of travelling out of Thailand to simply give up their contact with the authorities. The problem of course arises when one might have need of hospital treatment and the administrator asks for one's passport.
No, I advocated that in order to avoid the silliness of idiots the best route would be to instruct a firm of lawyers to submit applications on one's behalf but this wouldn't work in the boonies given the degree of imbecility that often prevails there. Lawyers who habitually attend Laksi and Chonburi seldom encounter problems for their clients.
Now fuck off you silly prick.
.... and there’s me, making assumption based on what you actually said at the time. Will you use the same revisionist principles when the EU fails, or when the pound and the dollar fail to reach parity? Do you advertise the frailty of your condo location, in the same way you cry about the location above?
Its all crumbling around you already, and still you insist on your faux superiority.. The (imagined rise) and desperate fall, of the SA empire. How very apt.
(with apologies to the op for the thread hijack).
i too have given it some thought,as we have a lawyer who lives close by and is very well respected and HONEST,i dont want the aggravation i had last yr.
i have had my retirement 800k plus cover for any visit to a hospital so i am well covered and it has never had to be used, but this io.didnt understand that with a fixed acc.you cant use an a.t.m. card to draw out only your pass book then that can only be done at the bank. but this pillock insisted a statement on the day which the past IO'S have excepted the letter from the bank the day before attending, along with the pass book.
Let me make it clear to you, you raddled jackass, I have never used a legal representative nor have I ever claimed to have done so. It is only in your febrile, deranged mind you have imagined this fantasy, you idiot.
I am not the one who had to skedaddle out of Samui with his tail between his legs because he couldn't meet the immigration requirements, you hapless bum.
I switched from retirement visa to marriage Visa 5+ years ago. Honestly to me the process time was almost always the same albeit the marriage extension to stay you have to submit a few pages of pictures around the house which is a no brainer. Yesterday I went to our immigration office for my 90 check in. I always set my stopwatch as I am curious. I walked in, nobody there. The immigration officer smiled and waved me right up and I was in and out in 6 mins and 22 seconds of which probably 5 minutes of that was the form, stamp and install into my passport. It was funny, as my wife had a call and she said she would be right in. I was out before she finished her call. She saw me walk out and immediately ended her call thinking something may be wrong. I said " Done, Lets roll". She called her sister right back.......
Why are you completing a form still? Once you are in the reporting system they give you a computerised generated receipt affixed to the back of your passport which is used to generate a receipt after the next 90 days, yes? I only fill in a new form when I have broken the cycle by leaving Thailand and the whole process begins again.
Why did it take so long?
last time I did my 90 day report it took me less than 5 minutes but I can't be sure as I don't do stuff like set a stop watch as I am not that concerned.
At Buriram they have set it up so I didn't even go inside the Immigration office. I handed my passport to one of the workers through a window of what used to be their lunchroom/kitchen and she must have given it to the IO as he then came to the door of the office and handed it back to me.
After I handed my Passport to the worker I sat down in the hallway and took out my phone and went to log in to the internet to read some news but never got that far before he was calling me from the door to get my Passport back, hence why i reckon it was less than 5 minutes.
Unlike Pragmatic who seems to have some issues with the Buriram office I have only ever had 1 problem and that was my own fault. They have always been very helpful to me.
I have mostly been on a marriage visa but have done visits on tourist visas and done extensions on all of these as well. Maybe I am just lucky or don't really give a shit?
Well here I fill out the top portion of a single page form, its like 8 lines of info. I sign it. The bottom portion is as noted " For govt Use" which they fill out and stamp. They tear that portion off, enter some data into their computer and staple into my passport on the same page as my 1 year extension to stay stamp.
I guess I time it out of boredom. Years back in Hua Hin there were times that it took damn near half a day. Nowadays it flies and probably like you, the immigration folks know you so its a quick business as usual type deal. I know a few times when I was there they called me up before others as they knew it was a bang bang and done process and others were going to take a long time. I would like to be able to complete it online but they clearly aren't there yet. So its a 30 minute drive for a 5 to 10 minute process then out to lunch with my wife.
But one mustn't lose sight of the fact that the 90 day reporting regime is utterly valueless and remains perhaps the most redundant of otiose Thai rigmaroles.
Yep, absolutely agree. Zero value add and more of a nuisance that seems to create a ton of unnecessary paperwork. It clearly is an archaic method that hasn't been revisited. You would think by now that they would have come up with a tiered approach based on longevity here.
- After 5 years marriage and continuous residence confirm every 3 years
- After 10 years residence confirm every 5
- If on Retirement extension and a property owner, every 3 years
- After 10, confirm every 5
The options are really an open book and would make it a hell of a lot more user friendly, reduce govt management of all of it.
I will say a few years ago while talking to my local immigration officer about it, while she agreed she made a good point in that there are many foreigners (Not just westerners) that sneak in here and try to go off the grid and hide and many later or at some point create or cause big issues. She said they will not change because of areas like Pattaya, Koh Samui and Phuket where the vast majority come to hide out and many are up to no good or are wanted by their home countries for various reasons. I couldn't really argue that point.
It goes back to the old rule, the behavior of a few will affect all, that's how rules and laws get started
