Fee for visa on arrival to double from 1,000 baht to 2,000 baht

The cabinet on Tuesday agreed to increase the fee for visa on arrival from 1,000 baht to 2,000 baht.

Government spokesman Maj-Gen Sansern Keawkamnerd said the reason for the doubling of the visa on arrival fee stemmed from the fact that many tourists tend to apply for visas at immigration checkpoints rather than applying for visas at Thai embassies or consular offices.

This, he said, has caused congestion at immigration checkpoints and also compromised immigration checks which may pose a security threat and allow undesirable elements to enter the country more easily.

The visa on arrival is valid for just one time and cannot be renewed.

The 19 countries eligible under the VISA ON ARRIVAL scheme:

If you are from one of theses Countries below and fly in it will affect you. But you must remember that it's NOT possible to obtain Visa on Arrival to enter Thailand via any Thai/Cambodian Checkpoint if you on the list also:

Andorra, Bhutan, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

Below is a list of Tourist Visa Waiver (visa exemption), no visa required prior to commencing travel to Thailand that won't be affected .

Countries which get 90 days: Brazil, Chile, Peru, South Korea (not possible to enter via any Land border), Argentina.

    G7 Countries get 30 days
: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, USA and United Kingdom.

Bilateral Agreement, Countries get 30 days: Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia, Russia and Vietnam.

Countries which get 30 days at Airport and 15 day stamp at land border: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Brunei, Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Slovak, Slovenia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and UAE.

BUT....there was no mention of when the new higher fee will come into effect, only that it had been rubber stamped by the Cabinet.

I suppose it will have to be published in the Royal Gazette before it comes into effect.

Umm, hang about how exactly is doubling the "visa on arrival" fees going to help with the "compromised immigration checks which may pose a security threat and allow undesirable elements to enter the country more easily" problem?

Prolly cuz you are not from Andorra, Bhutan, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

Betting you are from a visa exempt country.
