i am attempting to teach my Thai g/f english, silly of me i know,can anyone advise of the best way to describe the words get and getting to a thai with a limited knowledge of english? We use these words in so many different ways i am having trouble getting her to understand 555

Tell her to go the fridge and GET you a beer

Then on her way from the fridge, explain to her she is now GETTING the beer

Repeat the process a few times for her benefit

in thai there are many ways and words for conveying that meaning, it all depends on the sentence you want to make.

best to get a comprehensive english thai dictionary and start from there, or go to some of the many web based thai / english language resorces and forums.

Concentrate on one meaning at a time. To get has dozens - possibly hundreds - of different uses and if you try to teach your girlfriend all of them, you're both just going to end up confused.

My missus swears by this dictionary.
Translation is part of her job description and whilst working on minutes of a meeting she always has this open on the next tab.

When trying to convey something, try using google translate to get the basics and go on from there.

I would also look for alternatives to "get/getting" wherever possible.

Rather than "getting confused" use "becoming confused"

"Getting" a beer becomes "fetching" a beer.

Then she can learn that we also substitute "get" for just anything.

Get the idea?

Another thing I found usefull is to teach her some sounds ,, get her to repeat untill she can say it >> Church >> Lake >> Last >> and you can understand it ,, and tell her to stop being bloody lazy and FINISH the words instead of doing the Thai chopping the ends off thingy .

I know its gonna sound like this for a long time

Chur >> Laae >> and Laat but in time you should make some progress

Good luck with it mate , I,ve been teaching my missus over 3 years now and she still use,s LL,s where the RR,s should be and vice verca , however in their defence my Ngai,s , Ngam,s , Bpai,s + Bpen,s are no better ,, linguistically we are worlds apart ,,,,,,but nevertheless VERY happy

That is from the incorrect use of Thai. the rah sound has been corrupted to a lah sound. The best joke I have seen occurred in a rowdy class of boys I had years ago. To calm them down we were doing an English EPl favorite team exercise. The loudest and actually thickest fans supported River Pooh.

Yes, getting used to what you get is often difficult to get. But I guess if you were born with English as your first language you have as a child you get used to that part. Anyhow, what you get is just what you get. It may take a while for you to get the meaning, but eventually you will get it.

And you wonder why Thais are often confused trying to learn English?

Not many teachers around here.
Use pictures, do not do more than 5 words per day.
Sticky notes on furniture and household items.
and of course.....clear pronunciation.

Get is quite an easy word really.
My missus knows what it means but she sometimes asked if i can go to "got" something for her.
