AI in the classroom? A problem or a helpful tool?

Given that I teach Early Years, I don't have the headache of students turning in AI generated essays. But would be interested to hear how others use it or see it being used by students. Blessing or curse?

I use it to generate simple CVC stories, it has been pretty helpful for that. Not keen on using it for student comments, as I think given the fees, that's just not cricket; but perhaps others have a differing opinion.

I have found it to be helpful for getting to grips with Excel/Sheets, which is something I really should have taught myself some time ago. This year I had to take a couple of PRAXIS exams and found it helpful for coaching me through some of the math I head to relearn. Passed both exams first time and used AI to feed be "harder than normal" practice questions to achieve some kind of mastery.

AI can't get little Timmy to sit down, hold his pencil correctly or facilitate a discussion after Timmy and Jonny had a falling out at break time.

Most AI platforms are 13+ so the students don't use it.

It's been really useful for summarizing chapters of a book. I scan it in and post it into Gemini and it gives me a summary in 100 words. Saved me hours of work.

Good for images to inspire writing as well but it's not great as assessment.

It has been good for all the paperwork we get. Writing about your growth over the year etc. I can give it bullet points and it writes me a decent paragraph or two.

Gemini is brilliant. Been using it to source hard to find car parts. Lately. Certainly works
