Copernicus – July 2017 second warmest July on record


July 2017 extended the spell of exceptional global warmth that has now lasted since mid-2015. It was:
• 0.45OC warmer than the average July from 1981-2010;
• the second warmest July on record, by a margin of about 0.1 OC;
• a little under 0.1OC cooler than July 2016.

The monthly anomaly of the global average surface temperature in July 2017 (i.e. the average of the near-surface air temperature over land and the SST) was +0.41°C above the 1981-2010 average (+0.75°C above the 20th century average), and was the 2nd warmest since 1891. On a longer time scale, global average surface temperatures have risen at a rate of about 0.69°C per century.

According to GISS NASA, the average global surface temperature anomaly for July was 0.83 °C, which is 0.01 °C more than the July 2016, making July 2017 the hottest July in the record.
