"One could argue that a more accurate name for the now unpopular Global War On Terror would have been the Global War Against American Hubris."

"I did not vote for Obama but he is remarkable. In less than three weeks in office he has collected more than $150,000 in back taxes."

"Twenty years since the end of the Soviet-Afghan war, the U.S. now ironically finds itself fighting against the very movement it helped arm, in a country that is still crippled by chaos two decades on."

"This is a normal stage in the evolution of non-profits. They start out mission-driven, and after a while become institution-driven. Then fund-raising starts to drive the mission. Since they're never happy to just declare victory and disband (the March of Dimes is still around, after all), they often wind up at a far remove from where they started, positionally. What's more, because it lacks the market discipline of the for-profit sector, and the supervision that public companies face from securities regulators, etc., the nonprofit sector is probably subject to far more financial chicanery and mismanagement." - Glenn Harlan Reynolds
A Deplorable Bitter Clinger
"It should’ve been obvious in December that the selection of combative Rahm Emanuel as Obama’s Chief of Staff, a true “Praetorian Guard” for Israel, was a way of telling Israel, as well as American Jewry, that their cause would be well served during the Obama administration, as it has been in the past with each and every previous administration. In America, Zionists-R-Us! Yes, even if our nation is led by someone with Hussein as his middle name."

"Now would be a good time for President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to begin to reclaim that military for its proper purpose: to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Now would be a good time to ask exactly why, and for whom, our troops are currently fighting and dying in the urban jungles of Iraq and the hostile hills of Afghanistan."
~ William J. Astore/Retired Lieutenant Colonel, teacher at the Pennsylvania College of Technology ~
"The government let us down and allowed business gangsters to run wild. And there's absolutely nothing we can do about it."

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia may be the world’s last country to let a woman into its government—albeit giving her a post that deals only with educating females. The lady in question still cannot drive herself to work. Nor may she travel in a car without her husband or a closely related male chaperone to ensure that she upholds her moral standards.

The human rights situation [in Burma] is still challenging. It is difficult for me to affirm that the human rights situation has improved.

I would defend the liberty of consenting adult creationists to practice whatever intellectual perversions they like in the privacy of their own homes; but it is also necessary to protect the young and innocent.

Base words are uttered only by the base
And can for such at once be understood;
But noble platitudes — ah, there’s a case
Where the most careful scrutiny is needed
To tell a voice that’s genuinely good
From one that’s base but merely has succeeded.
— W. H. Auden
What will Obama do with KBR?
KBR has grossed more than $25 billion since it won a 10-year contract in late 2001 to supply US troops in combat situations around the world.
And should Obama chose to order the troops in Iraq home tomorrow, he will effectively sign a blank check for billions of dollars in withdrawal logistics contracts that will largely be carried out by a company once overseen by Dick Cheney.

"The draft bill on anti-airport seizure which was recently approved by the Cabinet appears to be more proof of the lack of any serious intention to keep airports off-limits to political rallies.
Why on earth is serious criminal punishment conspicuously absent from the draft? "

In the midst of the word he was trying to say,
In the midst of his laughter and glee,
He had softly and suddenly vanished away —
For the Snark was a Boojum, you see.

Marriage is rarely bliss
But, surely it would be worse
As particles to pelt
At thousands of miles per sec
About a universe
In which a lover’s kiss
Would either not be felt
Or break the loved one’s neck.
— W. H. Auden, After Reading a Child’s Guide to Modern Physics
"We have a president who is the exact opposite of the way he is portrayed. We have a president who has ambitions that are not being reported on. We have a president who was not vetted, and any attempt to be truthful about him is met with, 'Oh, come on, don't be paranoid!'" -- Rush
"I reject the view that says our problems will simply take care of themselves; that says government has no role in laying the foundation for our common prosperity." -- Comrade Obama
"Changes, which renew the United States, recover let and make stronger than ever before. That is pure American mythology, and if one takes the first reactions to the nominal value, then the Americans waited exactly for this self making sure. As they needed an educational flip, so that they deliberate themselves upon the fact that they are the most dynamic society nevertheless."

The world I believe is far too serious, and being far too serious, it has need of a wise and merry philosophy.
