Nanny state my arse, this requires it's own thread.
Why do you think would find it necessary for the parents to sign that?
Because these days there will always be some nutbag 'gluten free' family or some such that make a huge fuss and sue the school (the state) for giving their kids gluten or sugar or food contrary to their beliefs or religion or stupid fucking thing.
It's not the STATE, it's the fucking American public have gotten that stupid and far removed from common sense.

Another day and another example of the Nanny State running rough shod over folks lives. Check this one out:

Elementary principal in McMinnville insists military haircut is 'mohawk,' forces 2nd haircut on child.

Seven-year-old Adam Stinnett went to school March 9 with a spiffy new "high and tight" haircut in honor of his stepbrother, an active member of the U.S. Army.

On March 10, Adam was sent home with a letter from the administration of Bobby Ray Memorial Elementary School in McMinnville, Tenn., saying he wouldn't be allowed to return to school until his hairstyle was changed. The letter said the haircut too closely resembled a "mohawk," which is against school policy.

Adam's mother, Amy Stinnett, said her son was devastated.

Adding irony to the situation is the fact that Adam's school is named for a McMinnville soldier who was killed in Vietnam. And the school's gymnasium, according to Stinnett, is named after another soldier, a classmate of hers who died in Afghanistan.

    Hillis stuck to her guns.

"[Principal Hillis] said it was a distraction, and threatened to have him kicked out of school unless we shaved it off," Stinnett said. "Like a bald head isn't a distraction?"

That school official should be tarred & feathered and run out of town. What a jerk.

Tennessee Legislature Passes Bill Banning Squirt Guns Near Schools

    What's next? Hula Hoops?

The Tennessee House of Representatives passed a bill Monday night that makes it illegal to take a squirt gun — but not a real gun — within 150 feet of a school.

“A person commits an offense who intentionally carries an explosive, explosive weapon, permanently disabled firearm, hoax device, imitation firearm, machete, or sword openly within one hundred fifty feet (150′) of the real property that comprises the grounds or facilities of a public or private preschool, elementary school, middle school, or secondary school,” the amendment states in part.

    Agree.

Would have thought CA or WA or maybe CO but TN?

Probably won't see a law like that in TX though.

    Well yes.
But if they want to give him that haircut it should be their right to do so.

Talk about Welfare Queens. Those free-marketeers sure talk a good game, but when it comes down to it they need a nanny to support their habit.

The study found more than 240 cases in which the construction of a new Wal-Mart facility was assisted by taxpayers. Apart from 160 retail outlets, the study found subsidies at 84 distribution centers, representing more than 90% of the network of huge warehouses Wal-Mart has built to facilitate its expansion. Mattera stressed that the $1 billion figure is necessarily an understatement, given that public disclosure of subsidies is severely limited.

The value of subsidies for individual distribution centers ranged as high as $48 million (with an average of $7.4 million), while for retail outlets the largest was $12 million (average: $2.8 million). Subsidy deals were found in 35 states, with the most in California, Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Mississippi. In dollar terms, Louisiana, Florida and New York also ranked high.

“That a company with $9 billion in profits can wrest subsidies from state and local governments shows that the candy store game is out of control,” said Greg LeRoy, executive director of Good Jobs First. “The subsidies to Wal-Mart are particularly troubling, given that it uses taxpayer dollars to create jobs that tend to be poverty-wage, part-time and lacking in adequate healthcare benefits.”

The study recommends that states prohibit subsidies to retailers except in distressed areas that lack adequate retail outlets for necessities such as food. It also recommends that any retailer — like any corporation — receiving subsidies should be required to pay a living wage.

Woman Charged With Goldfish Mass Murder

Seems she had a fight with her boyfriend and poured bleach into his fish tank! Now she's looking at a felony cruelty charge for the mass murder.

"A Florida woman is facing a felony animal abuse charge for allegedly killing her boyfriend’s goldfish by pouring bleach into their tank, according to court records.

Angela Garcia, 32, was arrested Saturday after she allegedly trashed beau Norris Johnson’s Orlando-area residence following an argument.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the home by the man’s son. He told investigators that his father had gone to work following the argument with Garcia, but had told her to vacate the residence."

We got cops shooting folks in the back and now the justice system is going to throw a woman in jail for killing a few goldfish?

Parents of “Free-Range” Kids to File Lawsuit, Attorney Says.

The parents of two Maryland children who were taken into police custody after playing alone at a park will file a lawsuit, a lawyer for the family said Tuesday.
It's not clear who will be named in the suit, but the attorney confirmed to News4's Kristin Wright that a lawsuit will be filed "soon."

Matthew Dowd, an attorney with the Wiley Rein law firm, said in a release Tuesday that 10-year-old Rafi Meitiv and his 6-year-old sister, Dvora, were held in a police car for almost three hours, went more than six hours without being fed, and weren't returned to their parents until nearly midnight.

The suit stems from an incident Sunday, the second time police got involved with Danielle and Alexander Meitiv and their kids.

In the latest incident, a man called 911 to report two unaccompanied children at Ellsworth Park in Silver Spring around 5 p.m. Sunday. The man said he was walking his dog when the children asked to pet it. He said their clothes were dirty and they were walking around alone for about 20 minutes.

The parents have said they are part of the free-range kids movement, which aims to foster growing independence in children.

Yes, although the Nanny State has now taken over a parents' role.

So it follows logically, then, in this example that your sympathies would be with the athiest girl?

'An eighth-grader at a Pennsylvania school was reportedly denied treatment by a school nurse after she neglected to stand for The Pledge of Allegiance. The student contacted the American Humanist Association about the incident and the group is demanding an apology from the school.

According to the student, the nurse initiated the confrontation, asking why she didn't stand for the Pledge. After the student informed her that she wasn't required to, the nurse declared, "“Fine! Then leave! I have the right to not service you!” The student then went to call her mother but apparently the nurse resurfaced, insisting that, "She isn’t calling a parent until I have a long conversation with her!"'

Having solved all other problems, the feds will now regulate… Christmas lights

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a regulation for Christmas lights on Monday, deeming some holiday decorations a “substantial product hazard.”
“The Consumer Product Safety Commission … is issuing a final rule to specify that seasonal and decorative lighting products that do not contain any one of three readily observable characteristics (minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, or overcurrent protection), as addressed in a voluntary standard, are deemed a substantial product hazard under the Consumer Product Safety Act (“CPSA”),” the final rule said.

The ruling applies to a variety of Christmas decorations, including “stars, wreathes, candles without shades, light sculptures, blow-molded (plastic) figures, and animated figures.”

    However, “solar-powered products” are exempt.

The CPSC said the regulation is necessary because Christmas lights can be dangerous."

So the government will require minimum standards on cheap Chinese Christmas lights so people won't risk house fires over the holidays.

I'm all for consumer protection, not protection of the manufacturers or importers of sub-standard electrical products.

Why oh why do you right-wing-nuts hate average Americans so much and don't give a shit if their house burns down at Christmas
