FL Governor Charlie Crist is running for Senate for the GOP. But he now has a formidable challenger. Marco Rubio who has tightened in the polls.

Same schtick: young, good looking, articulate, GOP Cuban, "patriotic."

More to follow. Could Rubio be the rising GOP star? A non-wasp, that the GOP needs in the new demographics of America?

I think Gov Crist has fallen from grace (with the Florida GOP) because he has been siding with (or at least shows up/pictured at some of Obama’s events) Obama on some issues.

Mr Rubio will get a lot of support from the Hispanic community, but remember outside of maybe 4 counties (the more populated ones) in Florida (Miami - Dade, Ft. Lauderdale – Broward, A lot of Palm Beach, and the Tampa area), Florida is full of rednecks and will tend to lean towards someone who is not Hispanic.

I also think some of the Rethugs in Florida who voted for Crist as Governor have finally realized that Mr Crist has a bit of an identity problem and as you well know the GOP and rednecks have a problem with those types.

The final upgrade is in Florida, where Charlie Crist appears to be increasingly vulnerable to Marco Rubio, and where Rubio's momentum could pick up significantly if Doug Hoffman wins in NY-23 (or comes close enough to trigger a recount, etc.) Now, by no means is Rubio unelectable -- I think, in fact, he'd be a mild favorite against likely Democratic nominee Kendick Meek. But the nomination of Rubio would certainly put Florida back on the map as a potentially competitive race. It also might not be completely out of the question that some Democratic alternatives to Meek could be attracted back into the contest if it looks like Crist is going to lose the primary, although I certainly haven't heard anything to that effect.

He may be- he probably is. It shouldn't be an issue- but it will be among the macho Cuban voters, not to mention the rednecks and Bible-thumpers. I don't think Crist is so bad, but I'm only to happy to see the Rethuglicans tear each other apart.

it's still a long way to the senate for rubio.

loads of time for rookie mistakes and gaffes that could turn off voters.

and if he gets past crist, another potential problem he might have is with the teabaggers. in a general election, rubio will have to play towards the center....and as scott brown is finding out, the teabaggers are extremists who have no interest in the center.

Marco Rubio's poll numbers have declined every time PPP's polled Florida this year and voters are now evenly divided on him with 40% approving and 40% disapproving. He began 2011 with a +12 approval spread at 43/31. Here's how Rubio's numbers have moved as his first year in the Senate has progressed:

There's not much evidence Rubio would be a game changer as Republican Vice Presidential pick next year either. Only 24% of Floridians say they'd be more likely to vote for the GOP ticket if Rubio was on it, compared to 41% who say that would actually make them less inclined to vote Republican. The numbers with independents are similar to the overall ones at 22/38.

Finally Democrats lead the generic Congressional ballot in the state 46-40. That's become the trend for the party in big states- we recently had similar findings in Ohio and Pennsylvania- and bodes well for the party's chances to take back the House in 2012.

Marco Rubio Deflects Another Disgraceful Gingrich Attack

It hasn’t been easy for Newt Gingrich to reach new lows after attacking Romney for being a capitalist, but he certainly gets an E for effort. From Florida:

Newt Gingrich’s campaign said Wednesday it would withdraw a Spanish-language radio ad that attacked rival Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney as being “anti-immigrant.”
The move came in response to a request by GOP Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), a Cuban-American, who said neither Mr. Romney nor Mr. Gingrich was “anti-immigrant.”

It is true that Romney takes a much harder line than Newt on defending the country from hordes of illegal welfare colonists, but that hardly makes him anti-immigrant.
Postures Newt:

“The idea that somebody would actually think about deporting grandfathers and grandmothers strikes me as fairly inhumane. That’s how the ad got developed.”

Yanking on the heartstrings while pandering to those sympathetic to illegal aliens is a familiar tactic among Demorrhoids and particularly unprincipled RINOs. Note that Gingrich was going behind Americans’ backs by whispering in Spanish, “Psst, don’t vote for that guy, he’ll enforce immigration law.” Nothing is beneath him.
Tea Partier Rubio has stepped into the race before, when Gingrich accused Romney of being somehow like the party-switching RINO Charlie Crist, whom Rubio defeated:

“Mitt Romney is no Charlie Crist. Romney is a conservative. And he was one of the first national Republican leaders to endorse me. He came to Florida, campaigned hard for me, and made a real difference in my race.”

Nobody is trying to pass off Romney as the ideal candidate. But as Marco Rubio appears to have noticed, he is less awful than Gingrich.

Tonight on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Joseph Farah alleged that Florida senator Marco Rubio is ineligible to serve as vice president, saying he’s “not a natural-born citizen. We’ve been through this with Obama now for four years.”

Farah, the editor of WorldNetDaily.com, drove much of the controversy over President Barack Obama‘s birth certificate, claiming the president also was ineligible to serve because of where he was born.

He speculated that former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum hasn’t been more aggressive in taking on Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney because he is angling to be Romney’s running mate.

“I think Santorum is doing one of two things,” Farah said. “He is either trying to position himself as, ‘Hey, there is no mud on me and I’m a bona fide conservative’ and that is going to propel him in the race. Or, the other thing that crossed my mind — he was really talking about Newt criticizing Romney — the thought occurred to me, is he trying to position for a vice presidential candidacy there?”

Host Sean Hannity said Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is more likely to share the ticket if Romney wins the GOP nomination. But Farah declared that Rubio would not be eligible.

HANNITY: I think that’s taken. It’s got to be Rubio. That’s my guess.

BOB BECKEL: If it’s not, somebody’s lost their mind.

FARAH: Rubio is not eligible.

For some of you (even Republicans) who don’t know much about him, but what you might have heard on FOX, here’s more information about the creep I might know a little better being from S. Florida.

With the Florida primary looming and more mentions of Senator Rubio as a potential VP candidate on the GOP ticket, Latino and immigrant organizations are launching an awareness campaign exposing the positions of the Sunshine State’s junior senator. It’s called “No Somos Rubios” (We are not Marco Rubios).

Presente.org, working in conjunction with other organizations, released its “No Somos Rubios” video online. And Presente.org is asking its 250,000+ members for donations to help get this ad on the airwaves.

It could explain why Rubio recently blasted former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for calling Mitt Romney “anti-immgrant.” The political pressure as a result of open barrages from Latino groups may be gaining Rubio’s attention.

The main point of criticism is the hard line position Senator Rubio has taken on the immigration issue as he has aligned himself with the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party. He has expressed opposition to the DREAM Act, in-state tuition for undocumented youth, and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented people in the U.S. Rubio also supports the controversial Arizona immigration law, SB 1070, despite 81% of Latinos opposing this law.

Maria Rodriguez, the founding executive director of the Florida Immigrant Coalition explained the extent that Senator Rubio is out of touch with the larger Latino community.

“I remember a time when Marco Rubio represented his community and his constituents. He used to support the Florida DREAM Act and was better on issues related to migrant farm workers,” stated Maria Rodriguez. “Who is he representing right now? If nearly 80% of Latinos support the DREAM Act, why doesn’t he? He doesn’t seem to be interested in representing the Latinos of Florida or the Latinos throughout the country. He seems more concerned about his political aspirations than about the issues that our community cares about.”

Beyond Florida, should Marco Rubio become the Vice Presidential candidate, he will likely face trouble out west where there are larger Mexican American and other Latino populations most impacted by the immigration issue. Cuban Americans and Puerto Ricans in Florida are less impacted by immigration because of their status; Cuban Americans have the Cuban Adjustment Act and Puerto Ricans are US citizens by birth.

Dee Dee Garcia Blase, the Co-President of the Tequila Party National Movement, told Politic365 that “Senator Marco Rubio is no José Martí.”

“Rubio is creating a wedge between Cuban Republicans and Mexican Americans in the greater Southwestern and Midwestern part of the United States. Rubio supported the harsh Arizona anti-immigrant law, he does not support the DREAM Act and he will not take a lead on fixing the broken immigration laws via a legal immigration reform. Cubans in Florida benefit from Cuban amnesty under the Cuban Adjustment Act, yet, he refuses to reform a broken immigration system when presented with a reasonable plan.”

While Senator Rubio has publicly indicated that he is not interested in being a Vice Presidential candidate, potential Republican nominees will continue to court him because he is perceived to be a rising star in the Republican Party. But the desired effect of attracting more Latinos to a GOP ticket with Rubio may be harder to achieve precisely because of his positions on immigration.

A pity you take the left line on Rubio. He is a real American, and believes in the American dream -- work hard, play by the rules and you could succeed (that's right could; the American way is equal opportunities for all, not equal outcome or freebies for all). Many immigrants have done just that; why provide freebies for illegals when obama and his ilk can't even take care of real citizens by pulling back on laws, regulations and waivers that favour unprofitable businesses and industries, but squash the profitability of good business? Take a look at govt websites and the number of departments/boards/services/watchdogs. Bladdy boondoggle it is now, never mind obama's coterie of csars.
Cubans come to America to escape communism; they want to work hard, learn English, live the dream. Can't say that about most of the Mexicans, can you?

First of all I don’t think this is a right or left issue. This issue (Dream Act) is about letting kids who because of “no fault of their own” ended up in the US and gives them a way to citizenship. Rubio is just an opportunist, like a lot of politician and he should be called out for it.

I saw this,……..

But there is a stigma in losing, and that stigma would be significant if Romney/Rubio ended up underperforming among the Latino voters whom Rubio’s supposed to deliver.

These right wingers don’t understand. Rubio will only attract a handful of Cubans. That’s it. Maybe not even enough to turn Florida red after his record/stance is divulged to a wider audience of Hispanics.
