CHICO — A man who allegedly used an SUV in an attempted to run over an anti-abortion protester Wednesday outside of the Planned Parenthood office, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Matthew R. Haver, 40, was arrested by Chico police for allegedly trying to hit James Cantfield, 69, of Chico.

A Chico police press release says officers were called to the Vallombrosa Avenue location at about 10:35 a.m.

Witnesses said a man driving a 1991 GMC sport utility vehicle had attempted to strike a protester, according the release.

Canfield moved out of the way and was not seriously injured during the incident, but clearly shaken by the experience, Chico Police Lt. John Carrillo said.

Someone had taken down a license number, and officers were able to trace the vehicle to Haver. They then went to the suspect's home on Hooker Oak Avenue, where Haver was taken into custody.

After being taken to the Chico Police Station holding facility, Haver reportedly experienced a "medical emergency."

Carrillo was unable to elaborate on the emergency, but he did say it was such that it required an ambulance and fire department to respond. He said no one attempted to harm the suspect, but he would not say if Haver attempted to harm himself.

He was taken to Enloe Medical Center for treatment. As a result of the medical problem officers didn't hold him but issued Haver a citation ordering him to appear in Butte County Superior Court at a later date.

The case is being sent to the Butte County District Attorney's Office for a criminal complaint.

Haver was also cited with several misdemeanors as well. He was reportedly driving on a suspended license, and he had switched his licenses plates with another vehicle he had recently purchased.

Carrillo said Canfield is a regular demonstrator at Planned Parenthood and also at the Women's Health Center on Fir Street. He has a large sign with a graphic photo of an aborted fetus.

The investigation revealed Haver had a child with him in the vehicle, and as they drove by the demonstration, the child asked what was on the sign.

Carrillo said it appears Haver became enraged over the picture of the aborted fetus, lost control of his emotions and tried to strike Canfield with his vehicle.

I don't understand why the newspapers report the assailant was driving and SUV. It's as if that's important or as if a SUV ranks in the category of sporting a firearm.

Only Republicans drive SUVs. Oh, mebbe he is a leftie conservative.

Norts, I think the people in your vid are just plain folk who hate killing. They're not spokespeople and this vid is another liberal ruse to belittle these people.

I don't for a minute question the sincerity of the anti abortionists in their commitment nor in their reasons for wanting abortion to be illegal. I have no strong opinion on either side of the argument. What is clear, the anti abortionist who want abortions made illegal, need to consider the answer to the question posed in the vid, should they be successful in making abortions illegal.

I totally reject the answer "god" or individual conscience will decide punishment for women who have abortions. Last time I checked, god was not a member of the Supreme Court! If by law something is illegal, there must be a consequence for breaking said law.

The entire abortion issue has crusaders on both sides who are driven by emotional ideals. Both sides need to address the hard questions if they emerge the "winner".
