I've been trying to find out if Sanford is indeed, a Xtian fundy. Is he? He votes conservative and is listed as an Episcopalian, but I can't find religious "fundamentalism" in regards to him.

Part of the Church of England. Some of it's US and UK communions have liberal beliefs regarding gay priests, female preists etc. I don't know whether the gent in question leaned towards this interpretation of scripture or the far more hardline approach favoured by the vast majority of Asian and African communions and some US and UK traditionalist churches.

"He was told in no uncertain terms not to see her," Jenny Sanford said in a strong, steady voice as she sat in her oceanfront living room Friday. "I was hoping he was on the Appalachian Trail. But I was not worried about his safety. I was hoping he was doing some real soul searching somewhere and devastated to find out it was Argentina. It's tragic."

    Interview with Jen Stanford

I think this man's modesty and the quiet, gentle, unobtrusive, nature of his selfless piety will somehow shine through and save him :

"About an hour after Jenny Sanford talked of her pain and feelings of betrayal, her husband brushed aside any suggestion he might immediately resign, citing the Bible and the story of King David — who continued to lead after sleeping with another man's wife, Bathsheba, having the husband slain, then marrying the widow. "What I find interesting is the story of David, and the way in which he fell mightily — fell in very, very significant ways, but then picked up the pieces and built from there," Sanford told members of his cabinet in a session called so he could apologize to them in person and tell them the business of government must continue. "

The sure footed dignety this man shows perhaps we should all pray for him on this Sunday. Just like Jesus would have done....

Former S.C. GOP exec dir urges Sanford to resign Jay W. Ragley, who until earlier this year served as the South Carolina Republican Party's executive director, is calling on Gov. Mark Sanford to step down.

"For the sake of his family, for his own sake, for the sake of the Office of the Governor and for the sake of South Carolina, it is time for Gov. Sanford to resign," Ragley wrote in an e-mail to POLITICO.
Ben Smith: Political News and Analysis - POLITICO.com

it will be interesting to see whether or not he resigns.

conventional wisdom indicates that he's going to try and wait out the storm.....why is it that republicans never seem to take responsibility for their actions?

Because it is always someone else's fault . . .

In this case the wife had forbidden him to see her again, he then said he needed to go for a march in the mountains - totally neglecting his job - and then jets off to Argentina to sow his oats in Argentine soil, so to speak.

The guy is a hypocrite, his Family Values facade is just that. He is such a good poster-boy for the right, very apt.

Well, if God has given his blessing to the little escapade, then who are the voters to object?

    Who indeed?

I'll bet that God told him he could do it because the bible says it is ok to commit adultery if you are one of the chosen few.

I wonder if he had killed her husband would he have claimed he should be forgiven because King David did and he was forgiven in the bible?

I cant believe the audacity and the sense of entitlement of the man!

But the party faithful will swallow it hook, line and sinker . . . and obfuscate the issue like the knuckle-draggers here.
