    The Daily Financial Killing/Suicide Thread

Sad but true. Since these are nearly a daily occurrence I figured we might as well tack the shooting du jour on to a single thread.

Police: 3 dead in California hospital shooting

"Police Chief Anthony Batts said the gunfire erupted just before noon at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. He said the motive remained under investigation but noted the violence came amid a flurry of recent shootings in the country. 'This is a trend of active shooters that you have seen nationwide,' Batts said at a news conference. 'This is becoming a national trend, probably because of the tension that's going on in our society today.'"

Someone should start a thread keeping a tally of the falangs that fall of balconys in Pattaya, sky diving capitol of the Orient.

Geez, Milkie, they stopped commenting on daily shootings in the States decades ago. Unless it's a shooting spree, it ain't news anymore.

Maybe you could report on the shootings and other types of murders here in the LOS, since most of us live here. But it may take more effort than just using Google.
I grew up in Chicago, and shootings are nothing new. The vast majority of these incidents occur in Black or Latino neighborhoods. For whatever reason, they enjoy killing each other.

A thread about LOS shooting can be started in the "Thailand News Thread." Surely.

Race and ethnicity does seem to be an issue where I've lived, also.

Funny, I reckon the libbie press is being pushed to report gun deaths to promote gun bans. As Mellow noted, there are murders all the time in the US. And worldwide.

Got that right - M/M's just got a hard-on for the states is all. Don't see him starting threads on the numbers of abortions performed daily or the number of highway deaths?

$97,000 per year is not a lot of money these days. It's about $48 dollars per hour - before taxes and fixed expenses.

Still, hard to understand how someone could end of up in so much debt, of $460K - Housing.

Dad who killed family, self was $460K in debt, sheriff says
    • (CNN) -- A man who shot his wife and three children to death before committing suicide in Middletown, Maryland, last weekend had about $460,000 in mortgage and credit card debt, the local sheriff said Tuesday.
Five people, including three young children, were found dead in this house in Middletown, Maryland.

Deputies who examined a computer taken from Christopher Wood's home found information that showed "severe financial difficulties," including money owed on a home in Florida that the family had been unable to sell, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said at a news conference.
Wood was a salesman for CSX Railroad, where he earned about $97,000 a year, the sheriff said.

He left six suicide notes, according to authorities.
Jenkins said the medical examiner had determined that Christopher Wood, 34, shot himself with a shotgun Friday after shooting his wife, Francie Billotti-Wood, and their three young children -- Chandler, 5; Gavin, 4; and Fiona, 2 -- with a small-caliber pistol.

"Traumatic lacerations" found on the bodies were made after their deaths, with either a kitchen knife or a pruning saw, the sheriff said, quoting the medical examiner. Both items were found in the house.
"The injuries were very horrific," the sheriff said.
The wife and children apparently were killed while they slept Thursday night into Friday, Jenkins said.

^ Sounds like more than financial-related trauma.

I think the financial/debt issues are related to it.

And just an hour ago the CFO of Freddie Mac is reported to have committed suicide outside of Washington DC.

I think there will be more of these killing related to financial issues. Hence, the thread.

^ Ahhh. OK, you should slip that nugget of info into the title. If you say financial-crisis related deaths then we can include death by poison, wrist slitting, etc.

    Good point, Jet:

Acting Freddie Mac CFO found dead

    April 22, 2009 - 11:29am

VIENNA, Va. -- David Kellermann, acting chief financial officer of Freddie Mac, apparently committed suicide in his Hunter Mill Estates home Wednesday morning. He hanged himself.

Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Mary Anne Jennings tells WTOP police responded to the Kellermann home after family members called police at 4:48 a.m.

"We were called from inside the house to come investigate an apparent suicide," Jennings says.

"We're not going to give you details of the condition of the body, except to say it was an apparent suicide."

A medical examiner will make the final determination that the death was a suicide.
Police on the scene tell WTOP Kellermann's body was found on the home's lower level.

The Kellermann home sits on the corner of Raleigh Hill Road and Brittenford Drive in picturesque Hunter Mill Estates, a neighborhood of single-family homes outside of Vienna, just over the border from Reston. According to Fairfax County tax records, Kellermann's home is assessed at $898,440.

Neighbors tell WTOP they are surprised to hear about Kellermann's suicide. They knew him, his wife and young daughter from neighborhood parties and the pool.

"I'm in total shock. This is a wonderful family. This is the last thing I would have ever expected," says Susan Unger, who lives across the street from Kellermann. "I'm saddened. It's awful."

Unger's husband Paul says Kellermann was a "terrific guy."

"We're just shocked beyond belief. This is just a wonderful family -- very family oriented," Paul Unger says.

Kellermann, 41, had been with Freddie Mac for more than 16 years.
He had been named acting chief financial officer in September 2008, taking over after Anthony "Buddy" Piszel resigned. Freddie Mac's CEO David Moffett resigned last month.

Government-controlled Freddie Mac, based in McLean, has been criticized heavily for reckless business practices. Some say those practices contributed to the nation's housing and financial crisis. Freddie Mac owns or guarantees about 13 million home loans.

As CFO, Kellermann was responsible for the company's financial controls, financial reporting and oversight of the company's budget and financial planning.
Freddie Mac released this statement about Kellermann's death:
"The Freddie Mac family is truly saddened by the news this morning of David Kellermann's death. We extend our deepest condolences to David's family and loved ones for this terrible personal tragedy.

David was a man of great talents. He dedicated those talents to Freddie Mac for more than 16 years, serving in many business and finance capacities before recently taking the reins as acting chief financial officer. His extraordinary work ethic and integrity inspired all who worked with him. But he will be most remembered for his affability, his personal warmth, his sense of humor and his quick wit. David was a friend to many in the Freddie Mac family, and we mourn his passing."
