Those roofs would need to be built in a strength to carry a lot of snow, while the expensive solar panels would not be producing any power. In areas where snow is of concern, the yield woud be extremely low anyway because of low sun exposure over the year.

I also missed your announced solution for the storage problem. What would that be? We do need a solution for our energy needs but solar panels are probably not or a small part of it.

As blackgang mentioned, solar panels should go where the sun is and that's not over the highways usually.

So you really think global warming is a matter of faith and you can chose not to believe? Thats the ostrichs approach.

I went to school in the 50s and 60s when global warming has not been thought of. But I learned about the importance of CO2 and the greenhouse effect. How anybody can believe humanity can double the amount of that gas in the atmosphere without effect, is beyond me.
I agree though, that we don't know exactly yet, what those effects will be. They may not be all negative.
I'm sorry please don't respond if you don't have the education to know what you are talking about.. and obviously you don't.. Go back and view the video (or not) and educate yourself first and then maybe you can make a sensible contribution, if not then you can also choose to move on to another topic without making the fool of yourself as you've already managed to do here....

I looked at it but I can't read the blurry text and I can barely understand the wording over that music.

No it's not. If you start thinking over it it gets more ridiculous by the minute.

You compare your sun roofs with an overpass in its ability to survive severe weather? Those are massive because they have to support the largest possible trucks. If you build your roofs that strong probably the energy that goes into the construction will be more that the solar panels will produce in their lifetime.

And again solar panels must go where the sun is if they are to be of any use at all.

fine then you don't need to use it when it's built.. you're the one that hasn't a clue what you're talking about.. I've put plenty of thought and research into every aspect of it and you've only just NOT seen it so you have not clue one what you are talking about.. period! Full stop!! if you care unable to have any real vision about the potential of it then it is you who has the block and no one else. Thank you for your blinded perspective you can move on now..Or conversely you can stay and read and educate yourself..

I did and I could not find anything constructive in there besides your idea to put roofs on highways. And the arguments against that have been repeatedly given. You chose not to respond.

If you post your text here I will read it. You should have that text ready or did you speak freely out of your mind on that video?

New Millennium Solar Highway initiative Proposal to President Obama

    Dear Mr. President,
I’m going to be forthright and tell you that I did not vote for you this past election as I did not hear much in the way of concrete solutions mostly just rhetoric and dressed up speeches, but seemingly without much substance, don’t take it personally though I didn’t vote for your competitor either.

Since you’ve been elected my impression is that you seem to be a bit like a deer in the headlights, uncertain of which direction to escape the oncoming dangers as the reality check has set in, you know what they say “be careful for what you wish for”.
Though you do seem to be making an attempt to connect directly with constituents through personal Interaction and the Internet and it is through this media with which I am launching this challenging campaign here on Youtube, just as you have done to such effectiveness, in hopes of you proving this humble, unworthy constituent wrong in reserving my vote and lack of confidence in your Presidency by giving my sincere proposal the serious consideration in which it warrants...

It is my hope to gain your attention and make this very real, well thought out, proposal and hopefully out of it will come a real contributory solution to the country’s current economic woes over time, establish future low cost renewable energy infrastructure and production, along with real measurable environmental protection and policy implementation..

The timing is optimum, President Obama, the reasoning is unchallenged, and the money has to be invested, better now than in the future and why not under your presidency and not some else’s? Make this proposal your legacy just like FDR made the highway bill his legacy..

The money is already being appropriated in the stimulus bills and a primary purpose of that funding is to provide jobs and update infrastructure.

My proposal will do all of that and conceivably could also, through bid contract awards, in exchange for future energy revenues where by a given company would actually expend the necessary costs involved and receive those and or corporate energy credits, in the way of tax deductions or out right credits, as is being currently provided for energy efficient companies and nations.

Conceivably corporate investment should fund large sections of road infrastructure in association with this program which would require reconditioning during this process anyway, some sections of a given minimum length might even be considered for corporate naming rights in exchange for their investment.

This project has appeal for numbers of corporations as it will require far more than just construction companies, everything from energy and oil, to high tech computer and software will all be required, and therefore have a vested stake as well as retail investment.

There is no need to have these companies online upon initiation of this project as they could be contracted out during planning and initial construction stages through public contract auctions and additionally the monies has been allocated already for the purposes of these improvements it is up to you and your admin to determine where they will be directed and how they will be applied..

I ask that you indulge my lack of sophistication on the production of this video as it has been done with no budget nor fancy video features and no assistance so it is admittedly amateur but no less valuable in its content.

My proposal is this; on my adjacent computer is a picture of a highway that runs in parallel to another freeway system underneath. This is necessary in this location due to limited space and a lack of proper planning and allocation of land for future expansion.

In the States however this is not a common problem in most areas and thus the primary premise behind my proposal.
Instead of the upper level being additional highway it should be dedicated to the use of a platform for solar panels to create a national interlocking grid from north to south, east to west via the current highway system.

I viewed a documentary recently that inspired my thinking though it was never mentioned in this type of context; they mentioned that in order for us to power the entire country it would require the dedicated surface area of approximately the square mileage of New Mexico which is obviously impractical on many fronts, or the equivalent of our national highway system. Below are numerous upside reasons for my proposal consideration.

1)That amount of area of dedicated land would have to be acquired at considerable cost to the Federal government and tax payers as well as the environment and most certainly meet opposition requiring much more time to implement.

2)That amount of surface area would require clearing of surrounding habitat, trees etc. at a cost to the surrounding natural areas and once done be very unsightly if in view of the general public, and if not? Then it would be well out of practical distance thus increasing costs and the land would require constant maintenance and up keep.

3)The fact that that amount of land is required and would likely have to be off the usual path away from cities and urban areas makes it impractical and expensive to construct and link nationally let alone locally.

4)Having these ‘solar farms’ spread across the country is the only way to make sure you can produce energy at all times of the day and even when production in one area is not optimum due to weather conditions for example.

5)The problem with that is that most of the optimum solar energy producing regions are located in the west of the country thereby making full time production less efficient and available to the east without expensive additional dedicated infrastructure being added expressly to store and transfer energy to the east coast. This also has the effect of unfair logistical limitations placed on various companies with whom would not benefit as fairly from the location and future revenues thus restricting private investment consideration.

Well why worry about it if Obama has came up with the idea to do it, you will receive nothing from it, not even a thank you if I know Washington, and what does it have to do with the Current Crisis, in fact I see it as an addition to the current Crisis as being economic and going into the amount of debt to build a 6 lane steel reinforced concrete overpass 7 or 8000 miles long to span the country east to west and north to south is sure another economic load.

I gonna have to go with Takeovers on this issue, and I think that they must grow some kick ass grass on Phuket now days.

    6) Right now we spend billions of dollars each year on road
maintenance and repair due to weather conditions in which
these roads are needlessly exposed to.

    7) Heavy heat through sun exposure, heavy moisture through rain
and snow exposure, and heavy wear due to salts, plows, and
other detrimental factors all contribute to additional surface
    degradation

    8) Surface cracking due to constant heavy sun, causing expansion
and direct cold, causing contraction or in the case of frozen
moisture also causing expansion all combine to produce small
fishers which in turn are infiltrated by moisture of all sources
and cause eventual pot holes. This phenomenon would be
significantly reduced thus increasing surface durability and
    reducing annual maintenance budgets.

    9) Millions of dollars every year are paid out by insurance
companies to repair damaged equipment and injured people
who have been victims of slippery road conditions caused by
    snow, ice and rain.

    10) Millions in damage needlessly done to roads, vehicles,
equipment and the environment by millions of pounds of salt
required for deicing of roadways every year for snow removal.

My proposal if not eliminates these issues entirely in terms of highways, will serve to significantly reduce them, all the while providing safe, sustainable, renewable, free energy and revenues. In the larger picture the proposal is to construct a secondary level over every available mile of highway with an overhang a fair bit wider than the actual road width, spanning the nation and install solar panels across the entire surface as well as solar heating for water. Additionally, suspended from below is even the real possibility for an elevated travel area for lesser powered vehicles possibly smaller electric vehicles, smaller displacement scooters for example and even bikes, Segways, pedestrians, etc. all with there own dedicated lanes, suspended underneath the primary structure out of the elements and allowing them to use the current system without hazard. Is it possible to even have various restaurants, stores, rest stops, electric fueling stations drawing immediate energy from the solar panel grid while drivers rest and recharge their own batteries, in this infrastructure?

Certainly it is and the revenues collected from these various vendors would also be a consistent source of income and funds recovery to the nations budget as well as jobs production for the long term future..

If this is properly planned it can be easily constructed with future expansion in mind, produce the support system now with the intention of potentially adding an elevated high speed rail system in the future on either side of the structure traveling in both directions.

Being elevated and if of Maglev technology as it should be, virtually silent in nature it could be very safe and effective with no potential dangerous impedance to its travel thus allowing for higher safe speeds, following any potential route the highway system currently follows.

With incorporated solar water heating tanks, incorporated with a subsurface piping system they could be utilized for producing warmth to thaw surrounding frozen roads as well as providing heat and hot water to the retail space to be planned as part of the structure on the secondary level.

Any excess heated water from those solar tanks could be recovered for any number of additional usages when not required or pumped along the system to any where it is required for heat even from desert locations with continual sun exposure water temp could mostly be retained for thawing purposes or such as heating buildings, etc. up to and even including the production of algae for bio fuel usage in the hotter climbs where the hot water may not be required for other purposes.

The reduced amount of infrastructure damage/maintenance coupled with the reduction or elimination of required services like plowing, and salting road ways in the winter as well as linking the entire nation with this infrastructure and potential revenues to be gained through retail and bid contracts is unmatched in utility and savings to the government and tax payer included over its history and development once instituted.

It goes without saying the amount of jobs to be created on all levels from blue collar construction worker to high tech engineers, planners and architects, software and technology experts and designers of all fields for decades to come..

Fuel costs would be dramatically reduced with mileage increased due to the decreased need for higher A/C settings in vehicles that are no longer exposed to high external temperatures from sun exposure for long periods of time during lengthy trips or even local traveling while slowed in high traffic conditions..

The down side to this proposal is unavoidable and therefore negligible as in any similar long term initiative, this will take time to implement but the timing is optimum, the climate for change is optimum, the public is seeking out and more willing than ever to support such bold, ambitious and visionary initiatives and it will only get more expensive if continually delayed for future generations and not less expensive. Meantime we experience continued lost savings and revenues from not having taken the initiative now..

Of several really notable features of implementing this proposal now is if planned properly over the years as technology develops, the solar panels of the future are actually going to produce more energy with less surface area required as they downsize and become more efficient. This will have the effect of maximizing the same amount of surface area and actually producing more energy per square mile instead of requiring more surface area simply to maintain status quo in production capacity.

From day one it is also a viable option to have smaller wind turbines installed as well over it’s entire length with spacing in relation to each support column to add further energy production to the entire grid..
The overall savings to the tax payer would also be substantial in that the land required for this initiative is already government owned and require no additional funding, land defacing or acquisition to implement it immediately..

It could also be used as an incentive for states to provide leases or contracts to include State Roads as well, further expanding the grid potential and providing States with much needed revenues their strained budgets so desperately need and this is done without painful highway usage tax increases to the public through fuel prices and other sources..

There really is no serious insurmountable down side to this proposal, the more delay the more desperate the future need and cost will be.
It is only delaying the inevitable, as a country that leads the world in technology and innovation this is the next logical step in that direction instead of being the environmental pariah we are currently considered in the world community.

It is needed, so now is the time Mr. President, the technology exists now, without any more hesitation, please take up my challenge for the security of mine and the future of our children and generations to come..

It is not lost on me that with any such proposal there is always minority of intellectually deficient who can not see the good for what it is due to their inability to accept change or see in more than one dimension. This will always be the case and the weakness of those people though they are entitled to their opinions fortunately they're not in the majority of bold, thinking and visionary people..

You can sure tell this man has never set foot on a heavy construction job such as a super hyway and its infastructure such as bridges and overcrossings.
He has no idea what it would cost for 1 mile of overpass built to the width and strength he is talking about, most US hyways are divided 4, 6, and 8 lanes, so the overpass on top would have to be wider than that, I posted a link to the US pork spending by state a day or 2 ago, I will look for it and see if they have a place in there where they have proposed a new overcrossing and get a price for a structure that will only be long enough to cross a hyway not run for miles and bring the price back.

But I do know I am going to contact my swiss friend who lives out there on Phuket for 1/2 a year and here the other 1/2 and have him bring me some of that smoke,, hot damn,, one of them doobies sure beat the shit outta smoking a salmon.

BS! you knew I wasn't kidding and so what if I copped to it you're a low life cock sucker for printing the content without my permission and showed not only your character but your arse in the biggest way..
and I have plenty of experience with construction did it for more than 20 years you don't have the corner on engineering understanding like you'd like to think you do..

You do display a very limited understanding and ability to problem solve though as you see everything 1 dimensionally and black and white.. Real engineers and not ones who play an engineer on an expat forum would easily know how to work around these MINOR issues you mention as do I there are other shades of color and solutions to those who have vision and understanding..

For one quick example it doesn't have to cover every square inch for example you moron.. An occasional break or going around a interchange would not be a problem and wouldn't diminish the production of energy as for size that is the point and it has to be done it ain't getting cheaper, the Highway system which was built when you were a teenager looked impossible and expensive too and it exists so open your friggin eyes and shut your mouth for a minute toallow yourself to see the big picture..

So Thailand has more money than we do now? They have these very type of highway systems already in place in Bangkok or don't you get out enough?? Only theirs are used for much heavier use in supporting millions of tons of traffic and having a secondary roadway on top instead of just simple solar panels..
No you're an idiot for thinking that anyone was suggesting building and financing it all over night..

There is plenty of states listed and their pet projects and what construction costs are so dig around in this link and see what an Overcrossing will cost and then figure it out how much debt DF idea will bring,

See where 'some' of YOUR money is going.

I worked on most of the interstate system of hyways asswipe, I helped build them, I-5 from Canada to Mexico, I-405 thru LA from it's exit from I-5 to it's reentry south of LA at Laguna Nigel, I-82 thru Eastern Oregon into Idaho.
In fact I have over 40 years as supervision in heavy construction world wide, and am retired from 2 labor unions, Both IUOE and cashed out of the Ironworker's local 433 LA and the boilermakers in Portland Oregon.

but enough of that, and whats it going to do to your maglev and the guys on segways when your covering abruptly ends at an interchange.

You my friend are out of your fucking mind.

I have a niece that is a result of drug abusers coupling and she was born a few genes shy, and she has already written Obama too as well as most singers and movie stars, and her advise is also unsolicited and most likely unread too.

OK I have actually read it now.

One question to the general public. I don't know much about DF.

So did he write this with the intention of having it moved to

    Jokes and funny stories

or does he mean it? The mind boggles, if the second is true.

I guess all of those highways you were building constantly had cars just driving off the ends of an open overpass under construction or that was never able to take a quick detour route to get back on the Interstate?? Jaysus!!!! Talk about thick!! damn BG!! trailer trash you ain't! that's for sure! because you make being trailer trash look the equivalent of Doctorates degree..

and your contribution is what?? posting puerile, witless, one liners while hiding behind your key board under your rock, in your tin roofed shack, in the outback of Thailand..

6 months ago no one thought that a black child from Indo. who was born of a mixed race couple and a single mother would ever be President either. He has no more qualifications than I do to deal with this and he used the very same media much to his effectiveness to advance his agenda so why do you think it can't work for others too??

I'm quite confident that I have far more experience than he does in many aspects of life... Give me 700 million to make my point and I'll sell it just as well as he did..
Actually DF, I'll give you free reign to call me out. I certainly would never be opposed to any sort of broad alternative and clean forms of producing energy and whatnot. Predictably idealistic, for the technology and knowhow for such systems have been available for sometime. And certainly would applaude any grand effort for steps in the right direction. But you also should know that there is a sinister side of warm and fuzzy ideology - things of this sort never progress {rapidly} without the establishment's approval and eventual complete comtrol. Alternative and green tech has well been established to be practical and readily utilitarian for the masses for some time. Why hasn't it been implimated or initiated broadly? Because 'they' haven't become lords over the systems as of yet. Outside of all this, what it comes down to is cultures and populations that are based on mindless consumption and stimulation.
