    Neocon 101

    Some basic questions answered.

    What do neoconservatives believe?
"Neocons" believe that the United States should not be ashamed to use its unrivaled power – forcefully if necessary – to promote its values around the world. Some even speak of the need to cultivate a US empire. Neoconservatives believe modern threats facing the US can no longer be reliably contained and therefore must be prevented, sometimes through preemptive military action.
Most neocons believe that the US has allowed dangers to gather by not spending enough on defense and not confronting threats aggressively enough. One such threat, they contend, was Saddam Hussein and his pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. Since the 1991 Gulf War, neocons relentlessly advocated Mr. Hussein's ouster.
Most neocons share unwavering support for Israel, which they see as crucial to US military sufficiency in a volatile region. They also see Israel as a key outpost of democracy in a region ruled by despots. Believing that authoritarianism and theocracy have allowed anti-Americanism to flourish in the Middle East, neocons advocate the democratic transformation of the region, starting with Iraq. They also believe the US is unnecessarily hampered by multilateral institutions, which they do not trust to effectively neutralize threats to global security.

There has been a number of books, theories, and speculation toward this Neo-Con Movement. All have concluded that it fashions itself as a 'hidden Fascism'.

Irving Kristol (born January 22, 1920) is an American political philosopher considered the founder of American neoconservatism. He is married to conservative author and emerita professor Gertrude Himmelfarb and is the father of William Kristol.

Kristol was born in Brooklyn, New York City, into an orthodox Jewish family. However, he maintains that belief had nothing to do with his family's observance.[1] He earned his B.A. in History from the City College of New York in 1940, where he was an active Trotskyist.

    Kristol suggests of himself,
    "Ever since I can remember, I've been a neo-something: a neo-Marxist, a neo-Trotskyist, a neo-liberal, a neo-conservative; in religion a neo-orthodox even while I was a neo-Trotskyist and a neo-Marxist. I'm going to end up a neo-that's all, neo dash nothing."[7]

In July 2002, President George W. Bush awarded Kristol the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Neo-conservatism has its roots in a leftism which believes in using force and even violence to achieve political goals. Neo-con = hawkish Democrat, imo, in that they believe in a large powerful federal government. Traditional conservatives believe in limited federal influence; power over citizens lives should be as close to the citizens as possible, therefore, power should lay with the individual States.

Leo Strauss is the ideological father of the neo-cons.

    Hardly a leftist.

Their star has faded (or more accurately, crashed), thank goodness. Hawkish, radical Statists with their mindset firmly in the previous century.

Why don't we just go back to calling them 'the Loonies' as was the case during Bush seniors administration.

Perhaps their star has faded slightly. But they'll never go away. This broad mentality takes up most of what is the American establishment. They'll always be in control in one manner or another, to be sure. As to this hawkish ideal...don't count the President-elect out yet.

I don't think this is true. The neo-con 'movement' is characterised by a particularly pro-active form of propaganda and interventionism which has been alien to traditional conservatism which tends to be more reactionary towards change rather than initiate it.

In this regard, the neocons do bear resemblence to certain leftist movements, after all quite a number of the proponents come from a Trotzkiist personal or family background.

Edit: oops, that's almost what attaboy said, what's wrong with me this morning?

Neo-conservatives would turn on a dime and become neo-liberals if they found enough powerful Democrats to pursue their geopolitical agenda. In fact, Rupert Murdoch, who controls neo-con propaganda machine Fox News, appeared to support Hillary Clinton before she lost the Democratic nomination. This is because neo-cons generally lack opinions on issues such as welfare, the environment, abortion, federal deficits and taxation policy. In fact, they represent little more than the extension of military and political power for (what they feel is) the benefit of Israel.

Here is a very good explanation of Neoconservatives and the Neocon movement: origins, strategy to get into government, and beliefs:

Ron Paul... A smarter America would have made him the president. They have no idea how much of their freedom will disappear with the consolidation of government... The Comrade Obama Zombies are all trusting in bigger and bigger "say you'll take care of me" government... The NeoCon Nazis want to expand the American Empire... both want to turn Americans into sheep.

The bottom line is they're shit scared of everything and everybody, so they grab the big stick as soon as they hear a little rustling in the bushes. Bloody cowards.
