I'm safe. I live in a red zone. What are those red blobbies north of Borneo/Sulawesi? Is that supposed to be the Phils or is that offshore camps?
Lots of Brit troops in my country, too. They like to blow up stuff in southern Alberta.

That must be the established American presence in Mindanao Proper {P.I.} and more exclusively, Sulu - Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Extensions of the War on Islam. The maps are fuzzy. North {?} of Borneo might be Singapore. The Yanks have presence there as well.

Interesting to note, as of today there is not a permanent American presence here in Thailand, after a good two decades of American military reservations emplanted here. Occasionally, you'll spot G.I. Joe's in Phitsanulok, Khorat, and Udorn doing joint excercises.....

Only permanent ones are at the Joint United States Military Assistance Group - Thailand on Satorn. Very small number. Cobra Gold, joint Thai/US exercise is annual event. See many more US Military running about then.

I hope you realize that the Thais were the owns that begged us to come here as they were terrified they would fall to communism.

Of course now its the American war and the problem America caused even though the Thais took the US SF into Lao and hooked them up with Hmong freedom fighters.

I believe your history has been a bit twisted and revised for you my friend. Contrary to popular historical illusion, the Thais did not "beg" the Father America. But instead were coerced {or blackmailed} into such activities and built-ups. Even during those chaotic years and sensitivities, the Thais really didn't give a fok about their political destiny one way or the other. Those paranoid Presidents of yours, Eisenhower and Kennedy, were freaks and bought the commie boogieman theory to the highest points. Both these fine gentlemen just instigated and perpetuated chaos and conflict in the region.

Those two maps don't quite stack-up to each other. I thought that first one (dates notwithstanding) was a bt odd as I don't recall the US ever having any military presence in NZ much less a base.

In actual fact the catalyst for the break-up of the ANZUS alliance was the refusal of the NZ Govt. of the time to admit US nuclear powered ships into NZ ports.

I happen to know the true history. The Thais wanted us here plain and simple. They were not coerced in any way. They feared Vietnam and Laos and wanted the US and the Hmong to satve off communism. Had a relative that was in the army at the time and he went with the Thais into Laos to begin the "secret war". The Thais that suggested and set up the "meet and great" with the Hmong in Laos.

^^ Ya, forgot to ask about NZ.
Thanks for the other map, Norts. So, only 100 troops in Canada? Geez, hope they aren't all in solitary confinement across the country. Must be in Ottawa or maybe Nunavut checking traffic in the Northwest Passage. Or mebbe at the Peace Arch checking for US terrorists trying to sneak into Canuckland.

Good eye Ant! I lived in NZ for some years during the Lange govt and they were steadfast refusalist towards any sort of military relationships there. Made quite the row, weren't terribly concerned with who or how - banned any sort of nuclear-type naval from their fair harbours. Yanks, Poms, Ruskies, whomever. That was the same era of their "annoyances" with French in the South Pacific. Remember the Rainbow Warrior incident?

They have/had a part of some airport in Christchurch. A friend of mine told me. A refuel resupply station for planes heading down to the American base in Antarctica. Mate was working there cleaning planes and went to have a look and got shooed away by armed guards.

The only thing I can think of is the Waipanui 'spy base' in NZ which attracted some criticism a few years back as it was apparently passing on surveillance to US agencies. But to the best of my knowledge that's still a fully NZ operation. Mind you NZ is obviously the logical port for anything going through to Antartica so maybe there's a military re-supply depot or something like that?
