More to do with the Germanisation of the English language which was fashionable during Queen Vic's reign. The US didn't go through this so they still use the silent 'h'.

Wasn't English Germanised to begin with and then became more civilised after the Norman invasion?

Much the same really, but I see what you're getting at. The Normans didn't actually speak French, but a type of 'Black' French which was different to the Paris French.

There were still similarities as the Normans and many 'English' shared a common ancestry and language, at least initially.
