CEOs - love 'em or hate 'em?

Obviously, not being one, I'm a hate 'em kind of guy.

I read an article yesterday in the paper version of the Bangkok Post (19 Sept 2008) that said that 30 years ago, your typical CEO would earn $30-$40 for each dollar earned by ordinary workers. Last year, the average was $344 for each dollar earned by regular workers.

I'm earning about 45,000 Baht a month, and I'm a reasonably happy regular 9-5 wage slave. But I would be mightily pissed off to say the least if my boss was paying himself 344 times that amount, ie, 15,000,000 Baht a month. That would almost be enough to provoke thoughts of violence and revolution in my normally placid psyche.

    What about you?

(My boss actually earns only 2-3 times my salary, by the way, so no need to reach for the carving knife yet).
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

I hear ya, but its a bit of a cycle aint it.

A company needs to attract the best, to get the best they have to pay more.

and those figures are skewed anyway. cos a lot of those CEO's get paid bonuses if they perform or the company performs well and also a lot of that pay might be stock options etc....

^I read Forbes and the Economist regularly and get the impression that very few of those high-paid CEOs are actually the best at anything other than asslicking their way to the top, company politics, screwing up companies, and bilking shareholders.

Quite an impressive list of accomplishments I think.

Yeah, that's a line that gets trotted out with monotonous regularity. The best at what, though? Driving companies into the ground while raking off tens of millions for themselves?

I'm sure there are good ones that have a conscious. Just as there are many without a shred of integrity in their soul.

I'd no sooner lump all bosses in one category than I would all workers. There are good ones, like me, and then there are poor ones -- like ... well, you know.

CEO/ Senior Executive remuneration is out of control imo. What do you expect when they get to vote each other their own pay rises.

Shareholders should be a lot more activist about this, because it is them who are being robbed mainly.

Oh dear . . . well, I'm a CEO and I certainly don't earn 344 times as much as the workers.
Actually, some salespeople have a higher take-home pay than I do.

There are CEOs and there are CEOs . . . the few at the head of large MNCs and the rest at companies from 10 people to 1000 . . . mine has just over 300.

344 times? In the 'normal' world? Hardly.

^ You should give yourself a whacking pay rise. Go on, you know you deserve it.

Most CEO's get their bonuses in shares. I watched with glee when some shares slumped to less than 90% of their original value.
However CEO's seem to work less and get paid more. Most are found on the golf courses these days with their secretaries runnning the companies for them.
Damn it hard at the top.

are you advising any Indian workers at the moment b0b ?

SACKED employees beat to death the India head of an Italian industrial gear manufacturing company near the nation's capital, police said today.
Lalit Kishore Choudhary, the 47-year-old chief executive officer of Graziano Transmissioni India, died yesterday after sacked employees beat him up in the company's office in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh state, a senior officer said.
The confrontation followed a long industrial dispute at the factory, which led to the dismissal of hundreds of employees.
"The dismissed employees turned violent during a meeting with the management," R.K Chaturvedi, a senior police officer said by telephone, adding that 63 people had been arrested.
Angry workers damaged office property and singled out Mr Choudhary when he tried reason with the mob, he said.
