But Ray has a point - the Hillary diehards are not going to be lured by a pro-life candidate under any circumstances.

I highly doubt this claim. As the youngest has Down's Syndrome and Palin has an amniocentesis in something like the fourth month and knew the baby was going to be born with Down's.

Dem dirt is an outrageous, outlandish smear that borders on libel/slander and is a black mark on US politics.

    GOP dirt is fun.

The biggest positives I see on the Palin side of things is that she is not a Washington insider, she has not only shown that she is not afraid to fight the entrenched on issues, but that she is also willing to reach across party lines to get it done. IMHO she is closer to middle class America than any of the other three.

Ex-beauty pageant participant, ex-basketball player, and a working mom. – Hello, middle America.

For me a real added bonus is that she is not only someone who superficially supports Americans individual right to keep and bear arms, but she seems to deeply believe in that right. Granted this isn't a big issue for some. But for me it is.

Also does anyone think Quayle was a better potential VP than Bentsen was in ’88? And we all know how that one turned out.

It will be good to see Palin speak at the convention. Interestingly enough she was already listed to speak on the second night of the convention (theme for the night is Reform), but the VP candidate is supposed to speak on the third night. I doubt they’ll have her speak twice.

There is sort of a political Cinderella aspect that will be interesting to watch.

Lot a money riding on this. The pressure on her will be enormous.

My geuss is her inexperience will be clear even to us inexperienced folk.

You noticed how those two go together. Identifying a disconnect among party "reporting" and claiming to have no party affiliation.

Very good Ray. Please stop licking your desk and come over and collect your gold star.

^ true, but it seems to make some very, very angry.

or maybe it's something else in their lives that's making them so angry.

Remember in Pulp Fiction when Chris Walken told Butch about how is father stuck a wrist watch up his ass and left it there for five years? Does anyone know if McCain won his intellectual properties suit and subsequent payments from Tarantino?

    Dear Joe Six Pack Public,

Iraq never attacked the US. You were actually safer from an attack by any Iraqis before you invaded their country. Your theory doesn't hold water; are you going to invade every nation on the face of the planet to protect yourselves in the US.

    Yours,

    A. Citizen
True the invasion of Iraq may have had nothing to do 9/11 however the fortunate consquence was it created a magnet that brought out all the crazy nutter and gave our soldiers the chance to kill them over there well away from US soil

Channel 4 - News - Sarah Palin: risky running mate for US presidential candidate John McCain

"History is littered with the electoral disasters of risky vice presidential picks" - Felicity Spector blogs on the US elections.

Desperate? Calculated? Totally off the wall? Or the answer to every Republican's prayers?

History is littered with the electoral disasters of risky vice presidential picks. From Dan Quayle to Geraldine Ferraro, what seems a bold or unexpected choice can backfire in a candidate's face.

So what about Sarah Palin, whose elevation to the Republican ticket shocked even her native Alaska?

Never mind her complete lack of foreign policy nous and unknown debating skills, how will she fare against Joe 'attack dog' Biden, one wonders?

Clearly the choice of Ms Palin, self-styled 'Hockey Mom', mother of five, former beauty queen, was designed to win over those alleged hordes of disgruntled Hillary supporters. Yet they might not be so keen on her highly conservative record.

Apart from that National Rifle Association membership, the oil drilling support and her famous pro-Life views, she's also declared herself "open" to the teaching of creationism in schools.

On the environment: she's been quoted on global warming as saying "I'm not one who would attribute it to being man made". Oh and she's against listing the polar bear as an endangered species.

So how much does John McCain himself know about his running mate? According to reports, he only met her six months ago, and spoke to her just once on the phone before offering her the place on his ticket.

His campaign spokeswoman Nancy Pfotenhauer was literally lost for words on Fox News, when asked how well the two knew each other: "You're running flat into the wall of my ignorance here", she admitted. '"I truly have no indication whatsoever".

Well, at least they've got a few weeks on the campaign trail to catch up. Let's hope they at least get along.

Or McCain could always look Ms Palin up on Wikipedia, like thousands of others must have done. He'll have got a highly edited version of her biography. National Public Radio reports that in the 24 hours before she was named as his running mate, there was a flurry of activity on her site.

Her entry, reveals the Wikipedia editor tasked with overseeing it, was altered more than 54 times by the same person, upgrading the positive comments and removing bits that weren't so flattering.

It's certainly a huge political gamble according to Democratic strategist Chris Lehane, "very high risk with a potentially very high reward".

McCain's former communications chief Dan Schnur agrees, describing it as the kind of choice you'd expect if a candidate is "behind 10 or 15 points in the polls".

And the Anchorage Daily News has already dug out a less than flattering remark from Palin's fellow Alaska Republican senate president Lyda Green: "She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president? Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

So enjoy your media honeymoon while you can, Governor Palin. It won't last nearly as long as you think.

5555555555 She only cleaned up the state and got the lying political cheats some indictments.
And by the way, ray, in case you missed your geography lessons, Yukon and northwest BC border Alaska. Anywhere north in Canada also has the same climate. And Inuit nations, which don't see political borders as we do. You have to be tough, with alot of common sense to live there. That's why Palin has guts, grit and stamina. She also has brains. She'll stand her ground, I'm sure.

Nothing is going to happen while the democrats are in charge of Congress. They can bork any Supreme Court candidate McCain or Palin (if she ever becomes president) send up to the Hill.

Suprisingly enough she probabaly does have a bit of dealings in international politics. The state of Alaska deals with Canada, Japan, and Russia on issues regarding oil/gas, fisheries, lumber, tourism, and transportation and navigation.

The funny thing about conservatives, they tend to soften their hardline stances when something happens that affects a member of their own family. For instance the father with the gay daughter suddenly revises his stance on homosexuality or the wife of the guy who was against embronic cell research is suddenly all for it when it may possibly provide them a cure.

So that being said it will be interesting to see how Mrs Palin here adapts to the public revelation of her unmarried 17yr old daughter being 5mths pregnant and, more importantly, if the conservative - 'family values' - right suddenly finds the forgiveness in them that always seems to be missing (except, of course, when this kind of thing happens to one of their own).
