What was the point? If one has read more than one or two threads on this forum, it was obvious that on this topic CHN, Ant and Butterfly would take the anti-American position and Texpat would take the pro-American position.

Why go through all the trouble?

Amazing how pigeonholed so many posters are and how tightly they follow their chosen doctrine. As there any critical thinkers here?

Can any posters see both sides of an issue and appreciate the nuances?

I don’t see it, especially the leftist posters here seem to be overly influenced by their party’s propaganda and are unable to think outside the party line.

Ok, we know CHN, Ant and Butterfly hate GW with a passion and oppose each and every one of his policies, so what? How many times do they feel the need to express the same hatred?

    KW

“as English philosopher Edmund Burke once said, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’

Fair enough, you can hardly claim I do nothing. I am currently working in a socialist country helping the country understand and use market-based economic policies and business practices, I also write on issues of importance to me and yes, I often criticize US government policies.

I love politics and can discuss it for hours.

But what use is it to repeat over and over the same one-sided arguments? No analysis, only propaganda. I can hardly stomach watching news channels in the US, which usually consists of two individuals, each given about a whole minute, on both sides of an argument advocate for there position using selected information and data.

That Ok, but what about some objective analysis that goes along with it?

I am amazed at the close-mindedness of intelligent people when it comes to political issues these days?

I don’t remember it being so in days past.

Political discussions these days are fueled by hate and emotions. Bush bashing and rejecting out of hand any liberal position seems to be all most are capable of.

Waste of time arguing with these kinds of people.

How can you argue with people who are hate-filled and who ignore all available evidence and still believe socialism and force is a better system of government instead of democracy and freedom?

How can you argue with some bigoted people who claim all Muslims can not be trusted and should be treated with contempt?

That attitude is no different from a terrorist's, who blows him/her self up along with some innocents. Do Americans have the stomach for this kind of attitude?? If it is as you say then why do you guys moan the hardest of all when attacked??

Why don't you do your self and America a favor by shutting up??

Let's play a little word association, shall we Macha?

For example, I'll say: Snowball. You respond with: Hell.

    Ready?

Absolutely true in this thread, which started on the premise that Gitmo is a disgrace -- a single opinion. There are many opinions on Gitmo, but others were not welcome here.

Which is precisely why some posters (wink, wink) run to the opposite side of the boat to maintain some semblence of level. The faster some rush to port, others rush to starboard. Then the participants lurch for the outriggers. Faster and more furious. Spectators leap on the vessel until the masts break, the leaks spring. Insults fly and accusations are whipped to a frenzy in the maelstrom.

The sad, poor truth is immaterial at this point and is lost in the frenzy. It usually, almost always, lies somewhere in the middle. Destined for a grave that few will visit without malice.

Anyway.... When America started bombing Afghanistan in 2001, all the Taleban leaders and fighters ran for shelter in the mountains. They didn't fear the American bombing but the Northern Alliance ( a member of the coalition of the willing) who were mainly Hazara, Tajik and Uzbek minorties. These minorities had been brutally oppressed by the Taleban regime and with the American Aerial support they seized whole of Afghanistan with-in 2 weeks. A task which they couldn't collectively accomplish before. When they got out of the Northern areas of Afghanistan they killed and detained any person who was a Pashtoon, wearing a turban, with a long beard for the bounty being offered for capturing a Taleb alive. Now many of them were foreigners who just got inside Afghanistan, some were there just to help the Taleban against the Americans while some just went their to get their families out and many other reasons.

Watch this documentary it is a bit long but worth watching:

What other opinions would that be, Tex ? that torture and killing innocent is the way to go

Under Nazi Germany, would you have followed orders as a service man ? even if it meant killing women and children ? don't answer, we already know yours.

In the realm of base self sufficiency, I like our comparitive chances.

We import a lof of plasmas and cars, but could adjust without. We have some oil, not enough, but some. Those countries that export oil import a lot of food.

Every country is interdependent today. How would yours fare if the borders around the globe were sealed?

Some underdeveloped countries like Myanmar or Laos, might notice little change. I like our comparative chances. And we've got the means to protect it.

Try saying that to the hippies and Hippos back home Sailor boy! I am sure they will comply and you a lil bit.

Can the residents of New York survive with out eight hours of electricity everyday?? Many people try to relate to the people living in the under-developed parts of the world especially Americans but you guys don't have the slightest idea of how life is in those parts of the world. Ask those who live their.

Circle the waggons and get them Winchesters out, eh Tex?

Another insight from the redneck, homeboy mentality that underpins the blunt instrument known as American foreign policy.

America is so obsessed with materialism, that one day without electricity or the usual shopping experience buying new toys, would bring riots and shutdown the government in a matter of hours,

everyone would be in the streets, screaming and fighting

    How about Louisiana?
