Iowa Floods Vs. New Orleans Katrina

Here's a brief snippet of Rush Limbaugh's comparison of the Iowa floods to Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans, and the citizens behavior and responses to these disasters.

You only need to listen to the first minutes, although the rest of this youtube provides comparisons and differences by the commentators.

Do you agree with Limbaugh, or not?

    Why?

I think the bigger factor is time and type of disaster.

    Time:
The real damage from Katrian basically happened overnight, whereas in Iowa the floods have taken much longer to get worse, and worse, and worse over time. The time involed has given the population many more options as to how to react.

    Type:
A big part of the damage from Katrina was from the storm surge, and also some from the damage to the levees. The levees damage led to some flooding but no quite directly comparable to the flooding in Iowa. Katrina left pockets of placed not flooded and large areas that were only flooded as the storm surge came and went. In Iowa many places are still flooded - how can folks pillage if places are still underwater?

I pity all of the people who went through both horrors. Heck, if you are facing death and then can't feed yourself or your family, you do as you must to survive. I think Rush is comparing different societies, too. Big criminal element in New Orleans before Katrina; obviously not as much so in Iowa and the Midwest.

Absolutely a bit of an apples oranges comparison. Not sure but I believe New Orleans was #1 murder capital of the world prior to Katrina.

A wee bit off topic but heard the crop losses in Iowa will have a fairly substantial impact on further rising food costs.

No cuz I lived in WI during the summer of 1993 and travelled all over MN, IA an WI during that flood season which was worse than this year's flood. The scope of devastation of a flood is limited to the low lying areas.
All of NO and LA is a low lying area.
Also hurricane is different and you don't have housing projects in WI, MN, and IA like you do in NO.

    Rush is a joke sometimes.

It's great how he winds up these guys though!
