    Uk Forces "wimps"

First attempt at an issues thread but thought id see what the responce is. not even sure its relevent or in the right place.
I have read today the quite a well know british actor (rupert everett - my best friends wedding) has branded the uk forces wimps. i belive this is due to people coming back from iraq and afgan, saying how difficult ti was.
As a member of the forces we always consider ourselves quite highly and hope that people do consider us and most of all support us, which isnt the same as support our governments decisions.
just wondered after reading that today what is the opinion of us on here, and other armed forces.

Rupert Everett is not shy when it comes to expressing his opinions, having recently upset A-listers such as George Clooney. Now he's risked the wrath of British servicemen and women by labelling them "wimps".

Everett told a Sunday newspaper: "The whole point of being in the Army is going to war and getting yourself blown up. They are always whining about the dangers of being killed. They are such wimps now. It's pathetic, all this whining."

The St Trinian's star got on to the subject of soldiers when discussing a Channel 4 documentary he made about 19th Century soldier and adventurer Richard Burton. Everett's father is also a retired major, compared today's troops with those of the Victorian era who he says were: "itching to get into the fray".

Col Richard Kemp CBE, former head of all British forces in Afghanistan, blasted Everett saying, "This ill-judged outburst will offend many of our brave troops facing mortal danger and their families at home who also endure much."

Former military commander Patrick Mercer also waded in saying: "He clearly has very little idea of what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and appears to be struggling for publicity."

Everett, who claimed he would've gladly served under Queen Victoria, says he wouldn't join the army now because: "You can do that on stage. Critics can kill. It is the same. Exactly the same."

^ nope think it was meant to be uselessfuckingcunt . Hes some toff fuckwit who thinks because hes an actor and gets pretended to be an army officer while wearing makeup for a film that he can shoot his mouth off. Go and see my cousin who's in the Navy, he's one of the top 3 officers on his ship. He'll gladly point him in the way of a few wimps who'll make him regret his comments.
We might not agree with why they are in a war but that doesnt mean we should blame them for being sent to fight it.
    Fuckwit.

Well first thing first, navydoubs and CB79, all quotes and articles in Issues should be accompanied by a Link, or a reference if you are quoting from a book. An example, using the Daily Telegraph, is:-

"Rupert Everett apologises for calling soldiers 'wimps'
Rupert Everett, the actor, has made an unreserved apology for calling soldiers "wimps" and suggesting they went into the Army to torture prisoners."

Rupert Everett apologises for calling soldiers 'wimps' - Telegraph

I doubt what some Gay actor said is going to faze the UK armed forces, with it's proud history and traditions.

Sorry didn't explain myself properly, it was copied off another forum where this topic has already been discussed not an official website so to speak.

    Noted though for future reference.

Actors sometimes have a hard time separating reality from their pretend world. I wouldn't give him much credence.

Ah yes, that hard man of the acting profession, Rupert Everett.

Was he related to Kenny (RIP)?

Stupid comment which says more about the person making it (in this case Rupert Everett) than those he is commenting on.

Just goes to prove that many celebrities have far bigger mouths than brains.

Rupert Everett shirt-lifter, Kenny Everett shirt-lifter seems like the Everetts are all shirt lifters. I have a friend in the UK whose son is due to come back from Helmand province in Afghanistan on the 28th June. He and his father will be flying to Thailand on the 2nd of July. I will meet them at the airport and we will party for the 10 days they are here.
Furthermore this young man is 24 yrs old has already been wounded in Iraq in a previous tour, Wimp I dont think so. I would back him against 100 Rupert Everetts he is just your normal actor f*ckwit looking for publicity because his so called career is on the slide

i've never understood why people pay attention to entertainment business 'celebrities' when they start talking about politics. who cares what rupert everett thinks? not me.

anyway, as far as the UK forces are concerned i doubt most are 'wimps'.
however, the sailors that gave up to the iranians a few months back certainly didn't make the forces as a whole look very tough.

The sailors followed the rules of the Geneva Convention for Prisoners of War. Signed a confession under duress, remember torture is not always physical, mental torture can be far worse and affects you over a longer period of time.
Until anyone has been in this position I don,t think you should speculate on if you talk whether you are a wimp or not.
I have met a Tornado navigator who was shot down during the Gulf War very lucky to survive the ejection from the plane. He was then taken to Baghdad and shown to the media and tortured for a confession, none forthcoming when you are under this kind of duress you will say anything to stop it. the Geneva Convention says name, rank, and serial number there is a lot more to it than that.

Iranian Issue prior to release. The only beef I have with these people was selling their stories to the newspapers and profiting from it. The guys getting killed on a regular basis in Iraq and Afghanistan families were seething, and rightly so.
They signed up took the Queen shilling or Bible, signed the Official Secrets Act so there should have been no stories sold to the gutter press.

    hi ray,
can i just say on behalf of those guys, we dont get anyform of interigation training at all, nothing.
the navy i would say is the least military of the military, if that makes sense. we are all higly trained at our specific jobs, in my case a marine engineer on subs. i wouldnt have a clue what to do if we got taken in by iraqis. name rank number thats it. then what??
im pretty sure at the time we were hearing about beheadings alot too, so they were probably a little nervous.
however, they should not have come home and sold stories, they were being paid to do a job adn they did it, that money should have been taken from them and put into the veterans agency, or brit legion, not in there pockets when the already get pretty well paid!!
