    Gitmo:

There shouldn't be any "macho man" behaviour about it. This fella with the t-shirts, mugs and trinkets are making a pop-culture statement, but more important IMO, he's making a buck. This type of stuff appeals to a certain demographic.

    Hiroshima & Nagasaki:

The Potsdam Ultimatum was issued by the US and the Allies. Japan was told to surrender. Period. They refused.

More Japanese died in the firebombings than because of both a-bombs.

The Japanese deserved what they got. Actually, they deserved a LOT worse than they got. They did horrific things. They were allowed to rebuild.

I agree 100% Milkman. The Japanese bought their fate when they refused to surrender.

I do not know how Hiroshima & Nagasaki fit into any of this at all.

    pop-culture statement
If it were intended for mass distribution or to an audience outside the military I might agree. But it ain't. It's in the Shoppette. Do you know what those are?

It's a Quicki-Mart FFS available only to GIs -- on the base.

Should they ban coffee cups at GITMO cause some bleeding-heart wankstain from England thinks its outrageous? Fuck no. He was probably irritated that he couldn't buy one.

I honestly didn't hear people say that in the UK. We were as shocked and as upset as anyone. But, despite that, it wasn't a huge surprise that it happened when you think about the enemies that various US agencies were making for the country.

Also, people tend to forget that the WTC was where people from all over the world worked (and visited). 37 different nationalities all told.
    Absolutely, Marmers.

I had lived in Thailand 4 days before it happened. A handful of us (all Brits) watched the coverage on a big screen TV in a new bar and there was not a word spoken. A couple of us cried.

To belittle us Brits in the way that has happened in this thread is unfortunate & uncalled for. As for the Gitmo souvenirs - very tacky, stupid & ill thought out. But so are Torremelinos donkeys.

A few, I'm convinced, are exceptions.

The majority would not likely agree with you. Especially when they consider the attack in retrospect.

I too find this whole gitmo souvenir thing very crass, and would expect the same condemnation if brit or nations were selling similar.

As for 9/11, I dont know a single person who whooped and hollered in support of such an act. They were all equally as shocked as me, and felt sick to their stomachs. What made the occasion even worse was seeing all the emergency services going in and most not comeing out.

This whole "colonial" name calling is so boring. It happened long before my time, and has no impact on my life what so ever.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong

Possibly, especially when you see absurdities like the the mess in Iraq and the Gitmo gift shop.

It was a case of targeting civilians on a massive scale in order to achieve a military victory. Today we call it Terrorism. Or more conveniently, when it suits us, -- collateral damage.

Virtually all those who died were innocent civilians including women and kids. Holding them responsible for war crimes committed by the military is a purely emotive justification.

Get a clue. It ended the war that much faster and saved thousands of Allied lives. Not to mention me old boy who was being held captive by the Japs at the time...

I am not offended; I am incensed when anyone is killed in war or by any other means. What do you think would happen if the US just closed up shop and left the Iraqis to fend for themselves? How about the Kurds? The Shia and Sunni have split into so many factions, they are killing each other off already. Iran could sure use some of Iraq's oil fields. And who would send aid? Please give me your end scenario to a complete US pullout.

No, and don't forget lots of terrorist groups are over there killing their own people.

Did I say Brits? NO. I said Euro people. Guess I should have said the Swiss and Germans in the bar where I was watching the news.

Another point is that, while the US is publically going to war, many of its people are also funding other countries and missions, including I would bet the Palestinians. Do I have proof? No, coz it's secret. But, check out Charles Wilson's work aiding Afghanistan. The US and many other Allies do alot of covert ops. To think otherwise is nonsense, IMO.

It was I that mentioned Brits.

As I have said in the past, when I am wrong I can admit it.

I offer my apology at this time. Over the top I was.....

Under the geneva conventions it is a war crime to target innocent civilians.
But who takes the victors to court?

    I'm not apologizing to anyone.

Many wank Brits on this board got a burr in their saddle about America, and it ain't just GITMO. They're obsessive. Every thread, whether it be a cyclone in Myanmar or a food review -- they gotta get their digs in.

    Fuck 'em.

    A few others are OK.

have you taken your meds this morning ?

Texpat, if you are so homesick, why not move back to the US, or better re-engage in the military, maybe you could go to Guantanamo and play with those terrorists in the safety of your camp,

I don't know. I don't know all of them. I also can't speak for any other than myself.

If you wish to stop generalising, Jettie & ask if any specific Brit ever apologises, it might be easier to answer.

Thanks, Chi. It's the generalisation that gets to me. Just because some Brits/Europeans are twats doesn't make us all twats. Same with any nationality, huh?

Cock! cant take the heat of the discussion?

Geez, Gitmo is a farce, if it was Iran that was holding US citizens in similar conditions WW3 would break out. You boys fail to look at anything from a non American perspective.
If these people really are bad people then lets see them charged and tried in a court of law. Habeas corpus, thats all Gitmo stands for.

Most of them have been released after years of being caged like animals, without charge. ---- Sorry guys for fucking up 5 years of your life, but we thought you might be a terrorist! The really shitty part is that its against US law for them to do this to their own, which speaks volumes about how the current US government regards the citizens of other countries, (including their own allies).

Yes, unfortunately for all of us, the misguided US concept of fighting terrorism is only fueling radical Islamism.
