Japanese language and culture is unique in Asia, and seems to have slightly less in common with the rest of Asia than most other Asian nations.
Not sure I agree with this.
My view is that Japanese are quintessentially Asian.
I group them closely with Korea and Taiwan (advanced, modern, high-tech)
SEA seems to be a distinct group (Thai Lao Cambo, Indo, Phils, Vietnam, Myanmar)
China (and now HK) is different still.

In my mind's eye I never think of India as Asian, nor the western Asian countries of Pakistan or Afghanistan. But Japan -- definitely Asia. From a business perspective, they're quite different than any other regional nation -- including Oz and China. Well-established, international and successful. They have a stable government and are generally respected.

^Tex, in my mind I casually group Asians as Oriental or non Oriental. In that respect, Japan, Korea, China, Viets etc., to me are orientals. Thais, Flippers, Indos are SE Asians, and Indians, Sri Lankans, Pakis, Bengalis, etc., are East Asians.

Obviously, a terribly simplistic classification, but that's how I paint the broad strokes.

^^agree on India. My business strategy runs India out of Dubai (because we are not allowed to be in India).

That said, most of the money for India comes out of London and New York.

Similar, my firm's Moscow practice has more Russian qualified lawyers in London than it does in Moscow.

Don't have much to say about Economics but I do wan to say I wish that Thailand had more Thai made products. this place like the rest of the world is loaded with loads of the cheapest Chinese products. The stuff Thai people are buying they should be making themselves in my view. I would bet that there is a massive amount of imports coming in here without paying any duties. It really pisses me off when I buy something like a small clock for a couple hundred baht then it breaks. Then I find out it was made in China. WTF! Thailand's Chinese are bringing loads of low quality junk to Thailand which ultimately result in a loss for consumers. Tha Thai government should crack down on all this junk in order to encourage local producers to make products that actually work.

I want to buy something Thai other than a coconut ladle or bottle of Sangsom!

And Thailand should try to use 'Made in Thailand' on as many products as possible!
