So she's good at giving money away. Great. Just what we need.
Philanthropists aren't always what they seem.

I'd be more impressed if she spent some money on US social ills.

McCain's wife won't release her tax returns

WASHINGTON — Cindy McCain, the wife of Sen. John McCain, said in an interview televised Thursday that she would never release her tax returns, even if her husband was elected president and she became first lady.
Cindy McCain, who has a significant stake in a beer distributorship in Phoenix that her late father helped found, is wealthier than her husband and files her taxes separately. On NBC's "Today" show, McCain, who has cited privacy concerns for her children, said she had no intention of releasing her returns. "This is a privacy issue," she said.

I strongly support the most liberal candidate, Obama for this Presidential election.

At the same time, I respect constitutional protections of privacy.

Just because someone is smart enough, lucky enough, or brave enough to earn a high income doesn't mean they are less patriotic than a terribly under-performing, fearful mediocre teacher making $700/month in Thailand.

    Democracy is funny like that.

McCain Proposes Tax Holiday for Cindy McCain

    Washington, DC |
Republican Presidential hopeful Senator John McCain today proposed a "tax holiday" for his wife, brewery heiress Cindy McCain, as the centerpiece of his economic stimulus package.

When asked how this plan would benefit U.S. consumers, McCain responded, "Oh, I don't know anything about economics. I just wanted to do something nice for Cindy. I mean, she's like half my age and I'm gonna make damn sure I keep hittin' that."

In recent weeks, McCain's Democratic rivals have offered similar proposals more directly targeting their respective support bases. Senator Hillary Clinton has suggested a tax holiday on chewing tobacco and NASCAR tickets, while Senator Barack Obama is in favor of a tax holiday on lattes and croissants.

    really?

Cindy McCain, whose husband has been a critic of the violence in Sudan, sold off more than $2 million in mutual funds whose holdings include companies that do business in the African nation.
The sale on Wednesday came after The Associated Press questioned the investments in light of calls by John McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee, for international financial sanctions against the Sudanese leadership.

this is precisely why the american public have a right to know about the income of presidential candidates (and the spouses who bankroll them).

but in the end her obstinance only helps the obama campaign.

The article is more than a bit misleading in regard to the total value of investments related to the Sudan. Yes she divested $2 million from the funds but it is not like all $2m were invested directly with the Sudan, or companies doing business in the Sudan.

These are mutual funds that invest in a wide range of companies and based upon Calvert (investment company that allows folks to filter investments based upon various causes/issues – such as the Sudan). The funds in question (American Funds Europacific Growth fund, and American Funds Capital World Growth and Income fund) each have investments in four companies that don’t measure up in regard to the Sudan.

    Europacific:
ONGC – 0.68% of the fund
Alstom – 0.33% of the fund
Reliance Industries – 0.27% of the fund
Pertrochina – 0.08% of the fund
Total of 1.36% - which means out of her $1m investment a whopping $13,600 was invested in companies that are doing business in the Sudan.

    Capital World:
Pertochina – 0.37% of the fund
ONGC – 0.31% of the fund
Reliance Industries – 0.04% of the fund
Sinopec – 0.03% of the fund
Total of 0.75% - which means out of her $1m investment a whopping $7,500 was invested in companies that are doing business in the Sudan.

So she had a grand total of $21,100 in investments related to companies not making the grade in Sudan. A far cry from the $2m in total investment.

That being said I am still glad to see she has made this move out of those funds.

Cindy McCain targeted on the tax return issue

The media blitz that Cindy McCain recently conducted -- co-hosting "The View," appearing on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," sitting down for a "Today" show interview -- did nothing to lessen the lambasting she took Wednesday from a source that might surprise some: an editorial in the Washington Times.

The missive in the conservative-oriented newspaper sternly took her to task for steadfastly refusing, in the face of increasing requests, to release her income tax returns (she files separately from her husband, John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee).
The editorial notes that "Mrs. McCain is an heiress whose income and assets will directly benefit from the tax policies espoused by her husband. ... Taxpayers and voters are entitled to know how much these benefits will be."

Also criticized is her spouse. Noting that McCain "rightly fancies himself the king of transparency on Capitol Hill," the piece terms it "unimaginable" that he and his staff "can permit this open sore to fester."
The entire editorial -- headlined "Cindy McCain's 'privacy' charade" and complete with an accompanying, and caustic, cartoon -- can be read here.

With the McCains giving no sign of yielding on this point, it no doubt will continue to provide fodder for editorialists. What will be worth watching is whether this noise grows into the type of public clamor that causes political headaches.

This nosy obsession with wealthy people's holdings is tabloid material, not what one would expect from the Washington Times. Too much hollywood paparazzi influence in all aspects of media now. Enquiring minds want to know.

I think this is bullshit, I have a lot more respect for McCain than to think he would pull any shit just because she is his wife.
When my sons came on a job at their request I told them that if they worked for me that they would have to do more work of a higher quality than any other hand on the job or their ass would be out, they understood that and expected no special treatment, and I think John has that kind of integrity too.
Thats why he will make a fine Prez.

despite the fact that just weeks ago cindy was claiming that she would NEVER release her tax returns, she did release her return for 2006. a token gesture that is only going to make the press question what was on her 2005 and 2007 returns.

Can't come back with an argument so you attempt to attack the debator. Shallow. You'd have been thrown off the uni debate team. Or in your case, the junior college debate team.

    The McCains

This is really interesting! All I knew about was the adoption of the baby from Mother Teresa's orphanage! I also knew there was one son serving in Iraq , but it was through an e-mail...certainly not from anything McCain has said or that has been reported in the news!

The info on Mrs. McCain is verifiable on snopes (link included). I could find a verification or mention of the second item regarding his sons, though I do know that the one is at the naval Academy. Interesting things that I don't recall seeing in the main media...
    snopes.com: Cindy McCain

Bet you would have never guessed this one! No matter your politics. The media will never tell of this, so pass it on.
There was an article in the Wall Street Journal on Cindy McCain, John's wife. All I ever saw was this attractive woman standing beside John. I was surprised how talented and
involved with world problems she is. This is a summary of the article.

She graduated from Southern Cal and was a special-needs teacher.
After her Dad died she became involved with his beer distributing firm and is now the chairwoman. Sales have doubled since she has taken over from her father.

They have a marriage prenuptial agreement, her assets remain separate.

She is involved around the world clearing land mines - travels to these countries on a detonation team and service on their board.

They have a 19 year old serving in Iraq , another son in the Naval Academy , a daughter recently graduated from Columbia Univ. , an adopted daughter in high school, and a son who is in the financial office at the beer firm.

Raised kids in Phoenix , AZ rather than Washington DC .(better atmosphere) He commuted.

In 1991, Mrs. McCain came across a girl in an orphanage in Bangladesh , Mother Teresa implored Mrs. McCain to take the baby with severe cleft palate. She did so without first telling her husband. The couple adopted the girl who has had a dozen operations to repair her cleft palate and other medical problems.

They have a Family Foundation for children's causes.

She's active with "Halo Trust" - to clear land mines, provide water and food in war ravaged and developing countries.

She will join an overseas mission of "Operation Smile", a charity for corrective surgery on children's faces.

She has had two back surgeries and became addicted to pain killers. She talks openly about it which she says is part of the recovery process.

She was recently on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It was great! She is also a pilot – she was afraid to fly and took classes without John knowing to surprise him. She was his pilot when he was on his first political run. She is also a race car driver and does this with one of her sons. It isn't a speed race car but a car that is judged by distance and accuracy (maybe wind or coasting?). She did also talk about her addiction to pain killers on TV. She had a stroke because of high blood pressure and didn't think she needed to take her medication because she was so young. She had to relearn speech, etc.. She has been through a lot! She said that she and John began dating after she met him while he was in the service at a dinner. She said she told him she was 4 years older than she was and he told her he was 4 years younger than he actually was. They didn't find out until the y filled out their marriage license with birthdates.

Subject: John McCain's Sons - please read on....

John McCain's Sons Talk about putting your most valuable where your mouth is! Apparently this was not "newsworthy" enough for the media to comment about. Can either of the other presidential candidates truthfully come close to this? .... Just a question for each of us to seek an answer, and not a statement. You see...character is what's shown when the public is not looking. There were no cameras or press invited to what you are about to read about, and the story comes from one person in New Hampshire .

---------------------------------------- One evening last July, Senator John McCain of Arizona arrived at the New Hampshire home of Erin Flanagan for sandwiches, chocolate-chip cookies and a heartfelt talk about Iraq . They had met at a presidential debate, when she asked the candidates what they would do to bring home American soldiers - - soldiers like her brother, who had been killed in action a few months earlier. Mr. McCain did not bring cameras or press. Instead, he brought his youngest son, James McCain, 19, then a private first class in the Marine Corps about to leave for Iraq . Father and son sat down to hear more about Ms. Flanagan's brother Michael Cleary, a 24-year-old Army First Lieutenant killed by an ambush ... a roadside bomb.

No one mentioned the obvious: In just days, Jimmy McCain could face similar perils. 'I can't imagine what it must have been like for them as they were coming to meet with a family that ......' Ms. Flanagan recalled, choking up. 'We lost a dear one,' she finished. Mr. McCain, now the presumptive Republican nominee, has staked his candidacy on the promise that American troops can bring stability to Iraq . What he almost never says is that one of them is his own son, who spent seven months patrolling Anbar Province and learned of his father's New Hampshire victory in January while he was digging a stuck military vehicle out of the mud. Two of Jimmy's three older brothers went into the military. Doug McCain, 48, was a Navy pilot. Jack McCain, 21, is to graduate from the Naval Academy next year, raising the chances that his father, if elected, could become the first president since Dwight D. Eisenhower with a son at war.

From a Right Wing, Republican point of view, Ann Coulter described the current crop of Presidential nominees as a choice between "hemlock, self-immolation or the traditional gun in the mouth."

There is a big difference between the Mccain candidacy and the Right wing [failed] neo- Conservatism of the Bush administration, and indeed one striking similarity between Mccain and Obamas policy platforms- they both promise to attack and erode the old Washington circus of vested Lobby groups with their unlimited funding and access to centres of influence, revolving door employment between government and certain strategic business interests, and so on. They are both out to shake up the Capitol.

It is Hillary who, in several respects, looks most like the traditional Republican candidate in this election. She's totally enmeshed in, and obligated by, the traditional Lobby Groups.

The interesting article above (thanks BG) serves to highlight some of these anomalies-

-Cindy McCain is involved with, and funds, land mine clearing activities. The Bush (and Clinton) administrations basically killed the laudable attempt to ban Landmines (for which a US citizen, Jody Williams, shared the 1997 nobel peace prize).

-The McCains adopted an orpan from BanglaDesh, as the article notes above with glowing pride. How strange. During the 2000 Primaries, particularly in close run Sth Carolina, Bush supporters- co-ordinated by that scumbag Karl Roves dirty tricks brigade- used that fact to imply that Mccain had fathered an illegitimate child!

For more information on the 2000 Sth Carolina Primary read the following. I think you will then realise what the McCains really think of Bush & Co.

What Bush did to McCain in the 2000 S. C. primary

It is no secret that, in spite of the veneer of Republican solidarity, there is absolutely no love lost between the McCains and the Bush administration end of the Republican party, and what it stands for. Cindy McCain in particular is said to absolutely loathe them.
