This was a good trip for Joe Biden. He didn’t fall over, declare war or ask to see the Queen.

His preposterous motorcade squeezed its way through the Downing Street gates like an obese tourist through a metal detector, the massive Beast car designed to stop bullets and bombs but also protect its precious cargo from bumps in the road. It stopped. Security leapt out and scanned the road for cracks in the pavement. Then the president emerged, walked a few steps – and skipped as if to say “ta-daa!” Contrary to what you might have read, Joe Biden can still walk.

Gore Vidal described Ronald Reagan as a tribute to the embalmer’s art. He first made that observation in 1968, when Reagan was 57. Joe is 80. Age comes to us all, and it has come early to my knees, but Biden stubbornly refuses to retire – insisting that his party backs him for a second term and for everyone to please stop mumbling and speak clearly. He is a chilling reminder that past a certain point we all look like Ethel Merman. I don’t know what he’s done to his body but the skin is so palpably stretched and pinned that every time he smiles, his knees rise up, prolonging that short walk from car to No 10 – his advisers looking on anxiously, praying to God that he knocks on the right door.

The talking points are written down on cue cards that the president uses wherever he goes. Rishi and Joe sat in the garden to pretend to chat for the cameras and the president rifled through a deck of reminders composed, I’m sure, in font large enough to be read by the police snipers in the trees. “YOU ARE THE PRESIDENT,” read the first. “YOU ARE IN ENGLAND,” the second. And “YOU ARE NOT DREAMING,” the third. Later we were informed that Sunak “challenged” Biden over the use of cluster bombs in Ukraine, which – given that the president is probably unaware there’s a war in Ukraine, or even that such a country exists – would make for as illuminating a conversation as discussing economics with a cat.

How did America, that spritely democracy across the pond, become a gerontocracy like the old Soviet Union? We used to laugh at Brezhnev for snogging East Germans and saluting ducks: he was only in his seventies. Then again, there can be wisdom in old age: Konrad Adenauer retired at 87, and he built a democracy. There is value in having done it all before, to have seen every president since Roosevelt, a dozen wars, four recessions and all seven Police Academies. Biden is the late 20th century incarnate, as immersed in history as the continent he now tours.

Later, his helicopter landed at Windsor and the King gently guided the General Secretary of the Democratic Party through a review of Guardsmen in their tall, black hats. The president looked bemused. “Come on man, this has gotta be a dream!”

VILNIUS—President Biden said he was “not at all” surprised by Turkey’s decision on Monday to clear the path for Sweden’s entry into the NATO alliance, a sudden shift as leaders gathered for the start of the summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

“I’ll talk about it later,” Biden promised as he sat down to meet with the Lithuanian president.

Asked what made Turkey agree to a deal, Biden smiled and said, “What do you think?” but did not elaborate.

President Erdogan of Turkey had earlier linked Sweden's NATO bid to Turkey joining the European Union, setting up an apparent obstacle before it quickly dissolved.

Finland says it’s ‘very difficult’ to set a timetable for Ukraine in NATO

Finland’s new Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said her country supports Ukraine joining NATO “in the future” but that now is not the time to set a firm date.

In an interview on the summit’s sidelines, Valtonen cited a provision in NATO’s founding treaty in 1949 that prohibits a country at war from becoming a member.

“It’s indeed very difficult to set a concrete timetable therefore that Ukraine is actively defending its country and engage in a war,” Valtonen said. “Since in this kind of war, probably the difference between war and peace is not that obvious, it’s very difficult to draw the line at an exact place.”

Still, Valtonen predicted that steps would be taken at the summit to bring Ukraine closer to NATO short of immediate membership. “The most important thing is that we stand by Ukraine’s side and we keep on supporting Ukraine with an increasing pace and also that we can promise security in all levels towards Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” she said, “and also mentally that they can prepare for being NATO members in the future.”

President Biden addressed the NATO summit on Tuesday, saying the adding of Finland and Sweden to NATO is historic and consequential. Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Biden.

Ukraine will be an inevitable NATO state. They will become a fortress state with one of the strongest militaries in Europe, they are for sure the most battle hardened.

Biden is set to participate in a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at 11 a.m. ET today.

It comes after Turkey agreed to support Sweden joining NATO after a year of opposing the move.

The meeting is also taking place after the White House said it plans to move ahead with the transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey in consultation with Congress, according to national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Sullivan said the F-16 deal was in the works before Turkey's announcement to drop opposition to Sweden's membership.

"President Biden has been clear and unequivocal for months that he’s supported the transfer of F-16s to Turkey," Sullivan said to reporters. "That this is in our national interest. It’s in the interest of NATO that Turkey get that capability."

While the summit so far has publicly touted unity and support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russia's invasion, Zelenskyy has lashed out over the “vague wording about ‘conditions’” in a draft of an official NATO communiqué after it didn't offer a timeline for Kyiv's integration into the alliance.

Biden will later deliver a speech at Vilnius University before heading to Helsinki, where he will celebrate NATO's expansion, with Finland as its newest member.

Biden better announce that ATACMS will be delivered to Ukraine immediately. This incremental assistance is unforgivable. Biden looks weak in front of pootin. He needs to stop pussyfooting around and give Ukraine what it needs to end this war.
