President Biden on Monday called Republicans “fiscally demented” and knocked GOP priorities during the keynote speech at the National Action Network’s (NAN) annual breakfast to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“They’re gonna talk about big-spending Democrats again. Guess what? I reduced the deficit last year $350 billion. This year, federal deficit is down $1 trillion-plus. That’s a fact. And there’s gonna be hundreds of billions reduced over the next decade. But so what? These guys are the fiscally demented, I think. They don’t quite get it,” Biden said of Republicans, prompting laughter from the crowd.

Biden in his speech offered sweeping remarks on his administration’s work on civil rights and called out Republicans for their economic stances in light of disparities faced by minority communities.

“I think the economy — the way it should grow in America — is from the bottom up and the middle out. That way poor folks have a shot, middle-class people do well and the wealthy still do very well. They still do very well. But they start to pay their fair share,” Biden said.

The president said he’s “ready to work” with Republicans who just took over the House, but said he was disappointed by the first few bills put forward in the chamber.

“Like many Americans, I was disappointed to see the very first bill that House Republicans … are bringing to the floor. It would help the wealthy people and big corporations cheat on their taxes at the expense of ordinary middle-class taxpayers … This is their first bill and they campaigned on inflation. They didn’t say if elected their plan was to make inflation worse,” Biden said.

He called out to former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) in the audience, saying the California lawmaker was “probably rolling over” when the bill was introduced.

Biden also knocked a House bill on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and a proposal to implement a national sales tax — and vowed to veto the legislation if it gets through Congress.

“What in God’s name is that all about? … That’s how they’re starting their new term,” Biden said. “If any of these bills happen to reach my desk, I will veto them.”

Biden also talked about building Black generational wealth by chipping away at economic disparities and closing the racial wealth gap — refocusing on funding for historically Black colleges and universities and “aggressively” combating discrimination in housing.

And the president reiterated calls to ban assault weapons, protect abortion rights and pardon marijuana possession charges. He said he didn’t “want to hear a word from the other side” about his plan to forgive student loan debt.

“These are the same folks who didn’t have any problem at all, any problem at all, during the pandemic… [making] sure they get these so-called pandemic relief loans … A lot of these folks in the Congress on the Republican side were beneficiaries of these debt relief loans to the tune of tens of millions of dollars,” Biden said.

“I did not hear a word from them about ‘They shouldn’t be getting that relief.’ … And they’re complaining about some kid being able to take away $20,000 of student debt that keeps him and his wife or his husband, her husband from being able to buy a home or start a business or just get going?” he said, saying he’s confident his plan will clear the legal challenges against it.

The president closed by saying he was pleased to see Democrats and Republicans work together on the Electoral Count Reform Act and urged Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and further protect “the sacred right to vote.”

“We have the most vibrant economy in the world right now. We’re doing better than any other major nation in the world today … The path is clear to go forward. We need to go together,” Biden said.

Introduced to the NAN’s annual breakfast by the Rev. Al Sharpton, Biden spoke before an audience of around 350 attendees, including civil rights leaders and members of Congress.

The day prior, Biden gave remarks at the Atlanta church where the slain Martin Luther King Jr. preached, arguing that the country is at an “inflection point” in its fight for democracy and equality.

President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Approves Major Disaster Declaration for Alabama

FEMA announced today that President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that federal disaster assistance has been made available to the state of Alabama to supplement state and local response efforts in the areas affected by severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes on Jan. 12, 2023.

The President's action makes federal funding available to affected individuals in Autauga and Dallas counties.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Individuals and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can apply for disaster assistance at Home | disasterassistance.gov, by calling 800-621-3362 or by using the FEMA App. If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA the number for that service.

Federal funding is also available to state, eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis, for emergency work in Autauga and Dallas counties.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Kevin A. Wallace, Sr. was named the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas. Damage assessments are continuing in other areas. Additional designations may be made at a later date after assessments are fully completed.

The background check form, which circulated on social media, shows a monthly rental cost of $49,910 for an undisclosed property.

President Joe Biden celebrated the NBA champion Golden State Warriors at the White House on Tuesday.

The Warriors have won four championships in eight years, but they didn't visit the White House while Donald Trump was president. He publicly disinvited them after Stephen Curry, the team's star, said he wasn't interested in going.

"The Golden State Warriors are always welcome in this White House," Biden said Tuesday. He also honored Curry as "one of the great sportsmen of our time."

He said the Warriors "reflect America" with their style of play, showcasing "constant motion, with individual freedom and personality that comes together as one team, a team that plays with joy, with drive to be their best."

The Warriors beat the Boston Celtics in a six-game championship series last year, a victory that came after a difficult stretch for the team.

Although they won the championship in 2015, 2017 and 2018, their dreams of a dynasty fell apart when key players were injured. The Warriors fell to the bottom of the league.

"The last couple of years were pretty tough," Biden said. "Critics wondered if this team was gone for good as a championship team."

Biden has faced his share of doubters over the years, and he joked, "Fellas, I know what it feels like."

Vice President Kamala Harris, a California native and longtime Warriors fan, spoke first at Tuesday's ceremony.

"As a very proud daughter of Oakland, California, it gives me immense personal pride as the vice president of the United States to say, Dub Nation is in the house," she said.

Harris said she has a custom Warriors jersey that she keeps by her treadmill at home, calling it "a symbol of grit, determination and teamwork."

Along with Biden, Harris got a new jersey from Curry on Tuesday. It had the number 1 -- for No. 1 fan, she remarked -- and Biden got one with 46, since he's the 46th president.

Curry said he hopes to see it "on the wall of the Oval Office."

"Hopefully we can come back and check if it's up there," he said.

Curry and coach Steve Kerr stopped by the White House briefing room before the ceremony.

Curry thanked the administration for its work to bring home Brittney Griner, the women's basketball star who had been jailed in Russia on drug charges. He called her a "big part of our basketball family."

"It means a lot to know that she's here and home safe with her family," Curry said.

Kerr said he participated in a roundtable on gun violence with White House officials and two of his players, Moses Moody and Klay Thompson.

"We learned a lot about what this administration is doing to help create a safer environment in our country," Kerr said.

Biden signed gun legislation last year, but he's pledged to keep working toward tighter restrictions, including an assault weapons ban.

White House defends student loan forgiveness plan to the Supreme Court

Biden administration files its brief with the Supreme Court, defending student loan forgiveness

The Biden administration filed a legal brief with the U.S. Supreme Court defending its plan to cancel hundreds of billions of dollars in student debt.

In its arguments to the highest court submitted late Wednesday, lawyers for the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice argued that the challenges to the plan were brought by parties that failed to show harm from the policy, which is typically a requirement to establish so-called legal standing.

The attorneys also denied the claim that the Biden administration was overstepping its authority, laying out the White House’s argument that it is acting within the law. It points to the fact that the Heroes Act of 2003 grants the U.S. secretary of education the authority to waive regulations related to student loans during national emergencies.

The country has been operating under an emergency declaration due to Covid since March 2020.

“We remain confident in our legal authority to adopt this program that will ensure the financial harms caused by the pandemic don’t drive borrowers into delinquency and default,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.

The Supreme Court agreed to take the case on President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan last month, and the justices will hear oral arguments on Feb. 28.

Also from Norton's link, which to me hits the nail on the head:

"As we all learned during the Trump era, a sitting president cannot be indicted or criminally prosecuted based upon a DOJ Opinion from 1973," Lieb said. "That said, Trump and the House Republicans are going to make such a mess of this that it will consume the rest of Biden's term with investigations and, potentially, impeachment."

Biden administration imposes visa restrictions on 25 Belarusian officials

The Biden administration on Tuesday announced new visa restrictions for 25 individuals in Belarus amid that nation’s move to put an opposition leader and other activists on trial for treason charges.

“These politically motivated trials are the latest examples of the Lukashenka regime’s efforts to intimidate and repress those who seek justice, respect for human rights, and a democratic Belarus,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement.

The new order targets “regime officials,” including members of the National Assembly of Belarus, who took part in authorizing the death penalty for people convicted of supposed “attempted acts of terrorism” — a charge the State Department said has been used to intimidate the democratic opposition. Some of the individuals targeted have also supported legislation revoking citizenship for people outside the country charged with “extremism” and confiscating property for “unfriendly actions towards Belarus,” the State Department said.

The move to impose visa restrictions comes as the authoritarian regime of Alexander Lukashenko has put exiled democratic opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on trial in absentia on treason charges and “conspiracy to seize power.” Tsikhanouskaya challenged the results of the 2020 presidential election that she ran in against Lukashenko, who declared himself the winner. She fled the country following a deadly crackdown on mass protests against alleged election fraud, and now faces a possible jail term of up to 15 years.

The Biden administration has eagerly embraced visa bans as a means to punish bad actors overseas in the last few years — announcing visa penalties more than a dozen times in the president’s first six months in office alone. Biden has targeted foreign oligarchs and officials for everything from alleged corruption to human rights abuses in countries ranging from Guatemala to Belarus.

Tuesday’s action adds to the United States’ tally of visa restrictions against individuals who have undermined democracy in Belarus since the 2020 presidential election, bringing the number up to 322 individuals.

“We will continue to use all appropriate tools to hold to account those in Belarus standing in the way of their fellow citizens’ democratic aspirations,” Blinken said.

Biden administration finalizes new rule tightening regulations on gun stabilizing braces

The Biden administration has finalized a new rule to tighten restrictions on stabilizing braces for firearms that can convert pistols into rifles.

The Justice Department (DOJ) said in a release on Friday that it submitted its rule to the Federal Register, clarifying that manufacturers, dealers and individuals must comply with laws regulating rifles when they use stabilizing braces to convert pistols to rifles with a barrel of less than 16 inches, which are known as short-barreled rifles.

The release states that Attorney General Merrick Garland directed the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to address stabilizing braces in April 2021.

“Almost a century ago, Congress determined that short-barreled rifles must be subject to heightened requirements,” Garland said in the release. “Today’s rule makes clear that firearm manufacturers, dealers, and individuals cannot evade these important public safety protections simply by adding accessories to pistols that transform them into short-barreled rifles.”

President Joe Biden walked along the splintered boardwalk of this picture-postcard beach town Thursday and heard from business owners struggling to repair damage to their shops after deadly storms caused devastation across the region and killed more than 20 people statewide.

Santa Cruz County was among the hardest-hit parts of California from the wet and windy weather. The county had estimated damage to its public infrastructure at $55 million as of Wednesday, with likely more than 1,000 homes affected.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell, speaking to reporters on Air Force One earlier Thursday, said a lot of the coastal impact during the storms was caused by loose timber left behind from devastating wildfires in 2020 that washed out to sea, but then crashed back ashore in heavy surf, damaging infrastructure like the Capitola Pier and Seacliff State Beach in Aptos.

Biden toured a gutted seafood restaurant and the badly flooded Paradise Beach Grille, not far from the collapsed Capitola Pier and the brightly painted pink, orange and teal shops that are all boarded up following the storms. Walls were crumbling, debris scattered everywhere and floors swept away by raging waters.

Paradise Beach Grille Owner Chuck Maier told Biden that water had gushed up from the floor and swamped his business on Monterey Bay. "No kidding," Biden exclaimed.

"Sorry man, we're slowing up your work" he said to contractors on the scene.

"You don't feel it until you walk the streets," Biden said later from nearby Seacliff State Park, speaking about how bad the damage was and blaming climate change for the severity of the weather. "If anybody doubts the climate is changing, they must have been asleep for the last couple of years."

"The more attention we can get, the more assistance we can get, will help everybody," said co-owner of Zelda's on the Beach John Ealy, who also met with Biden. "Hopefully they'll support SBA loans, give support for the businesses to get back on their feet as quickly as they can."

"We survived the pandemic -- that was doable. We've survived other storms, an earthquake," Ealy said. "I mean, I think it just reminds me of how strong the community is. And how important it is to get built back and reopened."

Co-owner of Caruso's Melissa Serriteno said she was happy the area was getting attention from such a high-profile visit.

"With his own eyes he's going to see how bad it is down here. I mean, it's one thing to see it on TV. But, to see it in real life makes a huge difference," Serriteno said. "The sooner he helps us out, the sooner our village will come back."

"It's really sad to see it that way," she added. "I just hope that our village comes back soon, because I really miss it. I miss the livelihood, I miss everything. Once we're ready to go, come and support us."

Flanked by Criswell, first responders and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the president highlighted the damage from the punishing rains, powerful winds, floods and landslides. He warned climate change would create more extreme weather.

"We know some of the destruction is going to take years to rebuild," Biden said. "But we've got to not just rebuild, but rebuild better."

More than 500 FEMA and other federal personnel have been deployed to California to support the emergency operations. Thousands of bystanders gathered for the president's visit and cheered him on.

From Dec. 26 to Jan. 17, California was deluged by 11.47 inches of rain and snow on average across the state, according to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center, with some reports of up to 15 feet of snow in the highest elevations of the Sierra Nevada.

California gets much of its rain and snow in the winter from a weather phenomenon known as "atmospheric rivers" — long, narrow bands of water vapor that form over the ocean and flow through the sky.

California has been hit by nine atmospheric rivers since late December. The storms have relented in recent days. Forecasters were calling for light rain toward the end of this week followed by a dry period.

Criswell said Thursday on the trip from Washington that the president and staff have to be mindful of what people have been through when traveling to places devastated by storms and other natural disasters.

"There has just been so much trauma to this community and it's really important that we keep that in mind," he said. "These communities have had loss of life, loss of their well-being and their livelihood, and I think it's incredibly important that they know that the president is here to support them and that the full force of the federal family is going to be behind them."

Biden has already approved a major disaster declaration for the state, freeing additional federal resources for recovery efforts. Hours before the visit, he raised the level of federal assistance available even higher.

Newsom praised the fast federal response, but warned the threat remains high in a state that just a few years ago suffered devastating drought and is now facing record rainfall.

"The scale and scope of these floods is hard to understand unless you get out, and that's why I couldn't be more grateful to the president for taking the time to come out again."
