The situation certainly looks unusual on its face. The cash transaction was controversial even within the administration. The Wall Street Journal reported that the head of the Justice Department’s national-security division objected that it would look like a ransom payment. State Department officials insisted the negotiations over the claims and detainees were not connected but came together at the same time, with the cash payment used as “leverage” to ensure the release of detainees.
Now to the substance of our inquiry: Was it against the law to transfer the money to Iran until accounts were settled regarding victims of terrorism?

THE threat of a US invasion of Venezuela to oust socialist President Nicolas Maduro has been raised after Donald Trump's security adviser flashed a note about sending "5,000 troops to Colombia".

John Bolton said President Trump is leaving open the possibility of military intervention to protect the country's opposition leader Juan Guaido.

Bolton told reporters at the White House on Monday: "The president has made it clear that all options are on the table."

He also stood with a notepad which appeared to read: "Afghanistan -> Welcome the Talks. 5,000 troops to Colombia".

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has moved to ban opposition leader Juan Guaido from leaving the country, and has also frozen his bank accounts.


The move is the latest challenge by President Nicolas Maduro, who is refusing to step down from his position despite increasing pressure both domestically and internationally.

Maduro began a second six-year term as president on 10 January, following elections last year that many observers say were illegitimate.


Venezuela’s chief prosecutor Tarek William Saab announced that his office had begun an investigation into Guaido for his anti-government activities.

Saab also accused Guaido of inciting “violent acts” on 23 January, when angry protestors answered the self-proclaimed interim president calls to take to the streets.

“These acts are undermining the peace of the nation,” Saab said.

According to The Guardian, Guaido “appeared to take the threat of imprisonment in his stride”, saying: “We are here, we will keep acting and working to confront the humanitarian crisis.”

Despite Venezuelan generals’ apparent support for Maduro, “a handful of Venezuelan diplomats and officials posted to missions in the United States have said they are abandoning the Maduro government”, The New York Times reports.

The US, along with a number of other countries have publicly stated their backing for Guaido to become president and call fresh elections.

However, the Maduro regime continues to enjoy international support from a number of allies, including Russia.

Meanwhile, as the political crisis drags on, the people of Venezuela are continuing to suffer through a severe humanitarian crisis, with hyperinflation and a lack of food and medicine making life very difficult.

CARACAS: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he was willing to negotiate with the opposition and hold early congressional elections, in a concession as opponents plan another big demonstration.


“I am ready to sit down at the negotiating table with the opposition so that we could talk for the good of Venezuela,” Maduro told Russia’s RIA Novosti in an interview in Caracas, the agency reported Wednesday.

“It would be very good to conduct parliamentary elections at an earlier stage. It would be a good form of political discussion,” Maduro said, according to the Russian state news agency.


But at the same time he dismissed the possibility of holding a new presidential poll any time soon.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido is looking to ratchet up pressure on Maduro with walkouts across Venezuela on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), just a day after the embattled socialist administration barred Guaido from leaving the country, while he is investigated for anti-government activities.

The man challenging Maduro’s claim to the presidency is urging Venezuelans to step outside their homes and workplaces for 2 hours beginning at noon in the first mass mobilization since he declared himself the nation’s rightful leader a week ago during another round of big protests.


“Venezuela is set on change,” Guaido said.


US sanctions aimed at pressuring Maduro to capitulate in his power struggle with self-proclaimed acting-president Juan Guaido have Venezuelans fearing they may be left facing fuel shortages.

Whether they support the US sanctions or not, Venezuelans interviewed by AFP agreed on one thing: with a devastated economy, hyperinflation the International Monetary Fund predicts will reach 10 million percent in 2019 and shortages of food and medicines, these will only make things worse.

The US imposed sanctions on Venezuela’s state oil company PDVSA on Monday in an attempt to cut off a vital source of funds propping up Maduro’s government.

Proceeds from the purchase of Venezuelan oil will now be withheld from Maduro, a heavy blow given that more than 40 percent of the South American country’s crude is sold to the US.

The surge in political maneuvering has seen two dozen nations, including the United States and several big Latin American countries, backed Guaido, and the Trump administration has imposed sanctions that could starve the already distressed nation of billions in oil revenue.
