Uri Avnery: What Happened To Netanyahu?

Has it happened to him too? Is he losing touch with reality? It happened to David Ben-Gurion after 15 years in power. His behavior in the Lavon Affair was crazy. He was removed. It happened to Menachem Begin after six years in power. With great honesty, Begin admitted: “I cannot go on any longer.” He said so, and withdrew to his home. Is that what is now happening to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after 12 years in office?

His most recent acts were not sane. They were crazy as far as his own interests are concerned too. Netanyahu could have brought Isaac Herzog into his government. The good Bougie – honest, submissive and disciplined. Herzog would have brought his party with him, all of it or the great majority of it, and guaranteed a long life for the government. Herzog would have calmed the nations of the world, who have started being afraid of Netanyahu. And what did he want after all? For Netanyahu to put certain promises in writing? So what? Since when has Netanyahu hesitated to break his written promises exactly the same way he breaks his verbal promises?

Instead of the comfortable and pleasant partner, Netanyahu chose a devious bully who does not even bother to hide his deep contempt for him. Avigdor Lieberman does not hide his hopes to succeed Netanyahu at the first opportunity either. A partner who the entire world views as a dangerous man. Why? There is no explanation. No logical reason. To bring Lieberman into the government is a suicidal act. To hand the Defense Ministry to him is an insane act.

..... A person cannot continue to rule the country when a growing number of esteemed people with influence and power, who head such major institutions – the military leadership, courts, media, arts and academia – have all reached the conclusion that he is dangerous. When clear establishment figures such as former Mossad chief Meir Dagan, deputy IDF Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Yair Golan and former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon feel the need of their consciences to stand up and voice a warning. This is what happened to Ben-Gurion. And who is Netanyahu in comparison to Ben-Gurion?
Uri Avnery: What happened to Netanyahu? ? Jewish Business News

We will see, but several people are predicting the collapse of the Netanyahu coalition. I would see that as nothing but good news.

"The new defense minister has a long history of opposing peace plans.

Liberman quit the Likud party in 1998 over its support for the Oslo Accords. He left the Ariel Sharon led government in 2004 to protest the pending Gaza withdrawal. Again, in 2008, he walked away from the Ehud Olmert led coalition in anger over the US-backed Annapolis peace process.

He coupled that grandstanding with outrageous sounding statements over the years about wanting to bomb Ramallah and the Aswan Dam in Egypt as well as calls for drowning Palestinian prisoners in the Dead Sea.

As for Gaza, he has called on Israel multiple times to re-occupy it."

But suddenly now, dear Avi is a Dove. As said above in the Haaretz editorial, nobody believes the Israeli government. Moves are afoot to collapse the Netanyahu coalition (which has proved quite resilient up to now) however. Could be quite an interesting time for Israeli domestic politics coming up.

Talk about a Dejavue with Israel. I read all this bad news about Israel and now its happening in front of my doorsteps.

These overdemocrized countries have left their citizens standing in the rain and their citizens are looking for a new "Führer" (see Trump, etc.)

Uri Avnery has seen quite a lot of reality.

A member of the Irgun as a teenager, Avnery sat in the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the owner of HaOlam HaZeh, an Israeli news magazine, from 1950 until it closed in 1993.

He is famous for crossing the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yassir Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli.

You'll love this - Palestinian man executed by VICTIM IDF, and then they toss a knife down pretending it was his. "he was reaching for a knofe so I shot him in the head"... and then an ambulance man kicks the knife to almost within reach once he is dead.

Yes I know and I actually used to like him.
But these are new times and things are just not as simple as they used to be.

What this world needs is a good ole fashion war with millions/billions of deaths. Maybe we will then come back to our senses and start respecting each other again for what we realy are.

Don't worry, we're replacing them with good muslim boys. They'll all be gone soon. The males, at least. We can still find a use for the women.

Israel cuts water supplies to West Bank during Ramadan

Israel's national water company has cut crucial water supplies to large areas of the occupied West Bank, leaving tens of thousands of Palestinians without access to safe drinking water during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Mekorot, the main supplier of water to Palestinian towns and cities, siphoned off water supplies to the municipality of Jenin, several Nablus villages and the city of Salfit and its surrounding villages.

Ayman Rabi, the executive director of the Palestinian Hydrology Group, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that in some areas people had not received water for more than 40 days.

"People are relying on purchasing water from water trucks or finding it from alternative sources such as springs and other filling points in their vicinity," he said.

"Families are having to live on two, three or 10 litres per capita per day," he said, adding that in some areas they had started rationing water.

The city of Jenin, which has a population of more than 40,000 people, said its water supplies had been cut by half, and warned that it would hold Mekorot solely responsible for any tragedies resulting from water shortages during the hot summer months.

Mekorot did not respond to Al Jazeera's request for comment.

According to the UN, 7.5 litres per person per day is the minimum requirement for most people under most conditions but in some areas of Palestine - where temperatures exceed 35C - the minimum requirement is much higher.

Since 1967, Israel has limited the water available to Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip since its forces occupied the territories.

Israelis, including settlers, consume five times more water than Palestinians in the West Bank, 350 litres per person per day in Israel compared with 60 litres per Palestinian per day in the West Bank.
