Looks like there are some statistics to back that up. According to the safety and crime indices published by Numbeo (Crime Index by Country 2015 Mid Year) the U.S. ranks 76th out of 120 countries. There are no European countries ranked below the U.S., although Ireland, Russia and Ukraine rank 73rd, 74th and 75th respectively.

Georgia ranks 7th and Denmark 9th.
