Dozens dead in IS attack on Deir al-Zour

Islamic State militants have launched a fierce assault on government-held areas in the eastern Syrian city of Deir al-Zour, with dozens reportedly killed.

Twelve government soldiers and 20 IS fighters were killed, said the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

At least two civilians were also killed in IS rocket fire on government-controlled parts of the city, it added.

The jihadists have besieged government-held parts of the city, which borders Iraq, since early 2015.

IS already controls half of the city as well as most of the surrounding province, which shares the same name.

Deir al-Zour connects the militant group's de facto "capital" in Syria, Raqqa, to territory it controls in Iraq.

Syrian Army strikes back in Deir Ezzor, tens of ISIS terrorists killed

    15/01/2017
As expected, the Syrian Arab Army's (SAA) launched a counter-attack against the Islamic State this morning in order to recapture the points they lost to the terrorist group last night.

Led by the Al-Qassem Group of the Republican Guard, the Syrian Arab Army managed to clear the area around the Al-Tameen Brigade base, killing and wounding scores of Islamic State terrorists that were positioned at the eastern part of this military installation.

Following this swift operation, the Syrian Arab Army captured the points around their main supply road to the military airport, ending the Islamic State's brief territorial advantage.

Intense clashes are still ongoing at the Panorama Roundabout area of western Deir Ezzor, as the Syrian Army attempts to clear the area around the cemetery and Tal Brouk.

The PDPD appear to have lost against ameristani supported "Mujaheddin guerrillas".

"After the Soviet Union had leveled most of the villages south and east of Kabul, creating a massive humanitarian disaster, the demise of the PDPA continued with the rise of the Mujaheddin guerrillas, who were trained in Pakistani camps with US support."

Your link suggests Russian arms were supplied to Afghanistan political parties PDPA, along with "Kabul", presumably the elected/inserted government of Afghanistan.

Any links to supplying arms to factions at war with ameristan/it's supported cannon fodder? Or are you suggesting the Afghanistan government is/was at war with ameristan?

Smaller military bases, less contact with the natives. NATO countries employed them for years in Afghanistan - turn south at Gilbralter, east at the cape and north east, You know adjacent the North Atlantic.

You must have been asleep when they were being used to manage the mountain tops and slaughter children tending the flocks of lambs. Most are now unused as the strategy was a resounding failure and most NATO countries are no longer in country.

^ Well, it probably is in the UK because gallic = of or characteristic of France or the French and hate crime includes nationality these days.

The only way to defeat ISIS is to cut off its supply lines of arms and food.

Most of its hardware and supplies come from Turkey via Syria, or from Saudi via Jordan, convoys of the stuff.

But it is merely a descriptor to set him apart from teutonic or latino cum guzzlers, nothing more.

What beats me is why IS supply convoys aren't targeted as a priority.

Am just joining this topic, The OP asked what can be done about ISIS. The answer is nothing.

Western meddling in Arab affairs created the states or Kuwait, Israel and an Iraq with Sunni and Shiites. Western meddling caused the collapse of Iraq and its armed forces and the expansion of ISIS. ISIS exists because a significant number of people are prepared to fight for it. It exists because the government the west installed in Iraq is discriminating against Sunnis.

It is Western meddling that is the cause of problems in the Middle East. More interference and involvement will make matters worse not better. The solution is to let people and nations sort out their own domestic problems. In the end they will get the government and society they want.

Of course: it's also true that Arab self-abuse has made the ME the sulphurous pit much of it is today. Tribes with flags like nothing more than a murderous squabble to pass the time...'twas ever thus in that benighted area.

I notice you did not include Qatar on the list of usual suspects. Perhaps a redeeming cultural feature was discerned...

Bit late now the damage has already been done. It is being shown now by what is happening in Iraq and Libya that those countries and others like them need strong ruthless leaders to suppress dissent and keep the countries relatively peaceful.

Libya in particular was doing well under Gadaffi the people had free education and health care, water and power. The country had control over its own oil, banking and money but now look at it after the 'humanitarian' bombing and killing.

2 possibly 3 governments and various tribal groups all fighting over the oil and wealth.

That doesnt even address what is going on in Syria at present.

Could it be that democracy is not the best government for everyone.
