Or is it for effect?

I became aware of the news items availability whilst checking some news sites. That of course doesn't mean because some news sites carry it, it's true in any way.
I have not "twisted" anything I have pointed out along with others here on this forum that one cannot just believe everything one sees or hears as the truth.
I was working for a major oil company. I was asked to "improve" their information system. Having assets throughout the world meant information was third or fourth hand at best. When an international news organisation headlined an explosion, deaths and ongoing fires at one of their overseas refineries what did you think was their main concern when head office saw the share price collapse, because of the headlined world news bulletin.
They needed facts. The telephone system was down, no internet connections. What they did have was maps and plans and local photographs around the site. Boxes and boxes of them. They themselves knew they were legit. How because they had checked the sources, they had audited their secure information system but they needed to get a "story" to the news media and hence bring the share price back up if possible.
They needed a system which allowed for searches for all information quickly and to be available in multiple locations, able to create an auditable/proven information pack and be passed quickly to those who needed it - like the companies PR group spokesman. Which luckily a system I knew about, did.
Money was handed over and the oil company was delivered an, at the time, excellent company asset/information mining system. Probably thrown away years ago. But you ride one wave, enjoy it and then wait for the next. C'est la vie.
The "FACTS" were that the "news" companies camera had used a certain position which although showing in the background one companies logoed fuel tanks safe. The tanks in the foreground, which were on fire, but were actually in another companies property. Being next door to each other, the companies fuel tanks, to an ignorant cameraman and his tame reporter assumed they belonged to the same company. Their news "story" named the wrong company.
The heat and smoke of a fire, not a war, not a battle did it matter to the reporter, probably not. They filed the story, London took the news and ran with it. Did they check the facts, maybe. Were they bothered, maybe. Did their lawyers warn them of the consequences, maybe.
Did the oil company sue the news company, maybe. The oil companies share price recovered and a few financial experts probably made or lost money. The oil companies subsequently had bunkers in a number of it's offices manned and primed to be able to respond appropriately for any future "incidents".
Word got out, more oil companies were interested, more money changed hand .............
