Figures tell us more than 1.5 million Americans have lost their lives to guns since 1966.
But if you dig down into the numbers there's some surprising findings.
Planet America examines the facts and the falsehoods about gun violence.

^ It doesn't matter if 3% own 50% of the guns. You only need to own one gun to commit mass murder.

    ^Crazy rednecks.

What sort of society is it where parents feel happy about their kids going to a school where staff are armed because of the threats that may be around?
Hey...Nigeria may need that. But that is a country where militants kidnap entire rolls of girls schools, and is a country in proxy civil war. But the US? Land of the free?

I would not call them rednecks, IMO. Eastern WA is however, culturally different than Western WA.

Where do you get anyone feels happy about any of this? More importantly what kind of society would rather not protect their children?

What kind of society has weekly mass shootings and does nothing about it? What would cancer research look like if it was approached with the same attitude as school shootings?

Well, for one, there would be an organization purporting to represent cancer owners but which was actually the PR / lobbying arm of manufactures of cancer-causing agents who would draft and have passed by sympathetic right-wing politicians a law that prevented even the collecting and collating of pertinent information to be used to take logical steps to prevent future instances of outbreaks of death by cancer.

Oh, and the only thing that could stop a bad guy with cancer would be a good math teacher armed with cancer.

^^ and the health warnings on cigarette packs would have to be replaced by a 'stars and stripes', obviously.

Having cancer would be the American way, and necessary to stop authorities from killing you with cancer.

I assume your answer would be to be to ban all guns, how about we address the basics of the problem---the decay of the family.

you're answer is leave the guns and fix the family? How about if there's a gun problem, we deal with it directly. Dealing with the broken down family situation can be dealt with along side of people getting shot problem. First step is just to get the people in charge admit there's a problem.

Doing away with guns in the U.S.is not even in the realm of possibility, outlawing guns would never work outside of turning the U.S.into a military state, however if you have a practical idea of how to disarm all Americans I would be more than happy to hear it.

And how is it that I think?Removing all firearms that are capable of mass murder would mean removing all firearms from the market, even if you managed to do that what are you going to do with the three hundred million firearms that are currently possessed by civilians. Without imposing a military state how do you propose to control who owns what of those firearms already in the hands of civilians.Selling or importing arms illegally is already an offense punishable by incarceration. It seems as though all these fixes you propose will do little to limit possession of firearms ,not to mention the ever present black market.

...I would prefer to remove all firearms from the market and permit their use only by police and other authorized government agencies...perhaps a parallel with declining tobacco usage would be helpful: a pessimist in the 60s would have said that it is impossible to control tobacco use as there were so many products on the market. An intensive campaign over many years eventually reduced tobacco usage through education and heavy sin taxes. What I'm proposing can't take place over night, but demonizing those who deal in death is a good way to start...and that negativity will change attitudes over time...I suppose it wouldn't hurt to point out to folks in Oklahoma and Arkansas that Jebus never used a gun...

What you would prefer is never going to happen. How about a parallel with drug use,in the 1960's in never would have been thought that marijuana would be legal in some states and cocain would be a multi billion dollar business. It seems that history shows us creating more laws, that will likely be ignored, doesn't work so maybe address the real problem, lack of respect for life.
Just for your information, there were no guns in Jesus's day,and Christians are world wide not just Oklahoma and Arkansas.

All of that is quite good and doable once the minority but vocal NRA nuts are weakened and discredited.
Your point e) tax... A very good avenue to start, and a very good rationale for it too. Tax the hell out of all firearms and especially ammunition. There can be no 2nd Amendment arguments against it. Have your guns, but pay the tax to help alleviate the gun death problem.

With about 300 million firearms in America I hardly think gun ownership is a minority,as I said before your fixes are all about future firearm purchases, how do you propose to deal with the current supply.
