Russia has given Ukrainian forces a deadline of 5am Moscow time (2am GMT) on Monday to lay down their arms in the eastern port city of Mariupol, where it said a “terrible humanitarian catastrophe” was unfolding.
They don't even have the balls to take responsibility for their actions.

    Spineless Russian cowards.

Trust Arabs more than Russians . . . yup, should have thought of that earlier instead of trying to create wealth in a neighbour.

    A tad premature.

Small but important details form your headline link:

'State-owned QatarEnergy said in a statement that the two countries "would re-engage and progress discussions on long term LNG supplies

"The companies that have come to Qatar with (Habeck) will now enter into contract negotiations with the Qatari side," the German spokesperson said, according to Reuters."

!. No deal has been signed.

    2. Progress discussions.

    3. Contract negotiations

4, Germany doesnt have and LNG ports
and if they take a decision to build them, how long will they take to build them?

    5. Are the German greens/Greta on board?

    6. Qatar sells LNG on the spot market.

    How dangerous is Vladimir Putin?-briton-riviere-theres-many-slip-twixt

Date of first supply? Price of gas? Amount of gas delivered each year? Why would Qatar provide gas to Germany when it has already told Biden and Bojo where to go? Can German industry make a profit? Will there be a Germany by the time the " posible deal" delivers? Will the German population stand for a 200% - xxx% price increase?

World’s Top Alumina Supplier Australia Bans Exports to Russia

"Australia, the world’s biggest exporter of alumina, announced a ban on shipments to Russia in a move that will add further pressure on aluminum giant United Co. Rusal International PJSC.
Australia accounts for nearly 20% of Russia’s supply of alumina, the government said on Sunday. Alumina is the key ingredient for producing aluminum, and it is in turn produced from bauxite ore. Exports to Russia of alumina and aluminum ores, including bauxite, have been banned immediately."

The article essentially says the contract details - and duration - need to be finalised, which is perfectly normal.

Iran sits on the largest gas field in the world. But whether the country can turn the 51 trillion cubic meters into money is still questionable. The gas field runs under the border with Qatar - and that's where the conflict begins.

Russia's Gazprom books no extra gas supplies to Europe

Deliveries in April look to remain at contracted level

    22 Mar, 2022 12:39

"Gazprom has not booked any additional capacity for next month on the Yamal-Europe pipeline to Germany, according to monthly auction results released on Monday, suggesting that Russia does not intend to raise natural gas supplies to Europe.

Data from Europe’s gas transit booking platforms RBP and GSA Platform shows that Russia's energy giant did not secure any capacities with the Polish leg of the pipeline for April.

The decision appears to show that Gazprom will continue using the route as and when necessary, booking extra capacities at single-price daily auctions, Neftegaz.ru portal explained. The industry resource added that Gazprom only uses the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, which runs across Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany, as an extra route to balance deliveries. The long-term contract to use this pipeline expired in May 2020 and was not extended.

The main pipeline delivering Russian gas to European consumers is Nord Stream, which runs along the Baltic Sea bed to Germany. Another route is via Ukraine’s gas transit system. However, an auction of extra capacities through Ukraine’s gas transit system was canceled on Monday, as no such capacity was offered by Ukraine.
According to energy news site Oilprice.com, Gazprom not booking any space for April on the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline suggests that Russia has no intention to raise its natural gas supply to Europe.

The Russian energy giant has been blamed for artificially tightening European gas market by reducing its natural gas exports to the continent at the beginning of this year, compared to the same period in 2021.

Gazprom has insisted that it is not to blame for the soaring prices of natural gas, as it fulfils its long-term contract obligations, adding that it has not received requests for additional volumes above contractual thresholds.
Gazprom’s figures show that its gas deliveries to Europe in the first two weeks of March were at the highest level since last August.

Europe receives 40% of natural gas it needs from Russia but is now seeking to reduce its dependency by sourcing imports from other countries and scaling up renewables. The EU plans to slash demand for Russian imports by two-thirds this year and completely eliminate its dependence on Russian gas before 2030"

    Russia settles another dollar debt

Moscow makes its second bond payment to avert default.

    22 Mar, 2022 11:35

    "
Russia’s coupon payment on a sovereign bond maturing in 2029 has been processed by correspondent bank JPMorgan Chase, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing sources. The country was due to make a $66 million payment to bondholders on Monday on the bond.According to a source familiar with the situation, JPMorgan worked on Monday with the US Treasury Department on necessary approvals. The payment reportedly moved on to the next stage before the money is handed over to bondholders.

Last week, JPMorgan, as a correspondent bank, processed Russia’s payment on two sovereign bonds, handing the funds to payment agent Citigroup. The latter distributed the funds to the bondholders.

Making this payment means Russia has avoided a widely expected external bond default. There was speculation in the media that the nation could default for the first time in a century, as much of its foreign currency holdings have been frozen by the US, EU, and a number of other countries.

Moscow has used money from frozen accounts to pay its external debt, daring Western countries to try to block the payments. Russia has accused the US and its allies of trying to engineer an artificial default in the country by not allowing it access to its estimated $300 billion in foreign reserves held abroad.

Russia has 15 international bonds outstanding with a face value of around $40 billion. Prior to the Ukraine crisis, roughly $20 billion was held by investment funds and money managers outside Russia.

The country now has to make a $102 million payment on March 28, followed by a $447 million payment that must be made in dollars on March 31. The biggest payment of the year of $2 billion is due on April 4."

Russian spies in Poland?: Country expels 45 Russian diplomats for espionage

The Polish government expelled 45 Russian diplomats on Wednesday for espionage, an accusation that the Russian ambassador in Poland immediately dismissed as baseless.

Poland's Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski announced on Twitter that his country has "expelled 45 Russian spies pretending to be diplomats."

"Poland expelled 45 Russian spies pretending to be diplomats. With full consistency and determination, we are breaking up the agents of the Russian secret services in our country," Kaminski wrote.

Sergey Andreyev, the Russian ambassador to Poland, confirmed the expulsion, adding that the expelled individuals had been given five days to leave.

"There are no grounds for these kinds of accusations," he said, adding that Russia reserves the right to take retaliatory action.

As far as bilateral diplomatic relations are concerned, he stated: "The embassies remain, the ambassadors remain."

Poland's counter-espionage service, ABW had earlier on Wednesday said that it had identified 45 Russian diplomats as suspected spies and recommended that the foreign ministry expel them.

"The internal security agency has drawn up a list of 45 people working in Poland under the cover of diplomatic activities," ABW spokesman Stanislaw Zaryn told reporters, accusing the suspects of targeting Poland.

He said the list of suspects had been transferred to the foreign ministry, tweeting that "ABW is requesting that they be expelled from Polish territory".

The ABW "has detained a Polish national on suspicion of espionage for the Russian secret services," the spokesman added on Twitter.

"The detainee worked in the archives of Warsaw's registry office," he said.

"The activity of the suspect posed a threat to both (the) internal and external security of Poland."

Because of course they are going to claim they didn't pay in rubles.

And even if they did manage to distribute the funds to their banks in dollars it will have come from Putin's private stash.

Chip industry under threat with neon production set to fall off a cliff following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Published Fri, Mar 25 2022 2:52 AM EDT

Updated Fri, Mar 25 2022 10:11 AM EDT

    • Neon is required for the lasers that are used in a chip production process known as lithography, where machines carve patterns onto tiny pieces of silicon made by the likes of Samsung, Intel and TSMC.
    • These machines are produced by Dutch firm ASML.
    • More than half of the world’s neon is produced by a handful of companies in Ukraine, according to Peter Hanbury, a semiconductor analyst at research firm Bain & Co.

"Russia’s war in Ukraine could see the production of neon, a critical gas in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, fall to worryingly low levels at a time when the world is already grappling with a chip shortage.

Neon is required for the lasers that are used in a chip production process known as lithography, where machines carve patterns onto tiny pieces of silicon made by the likes of Samsung, Intel and TSMC.

More than half of the world’s neon is produced by a handful of companies in Ukraine, according to Peter Hanbury, a semiconductor analyst at research firm Bain & Co.

Those companies include Mariupol-based Ingas, as well as Cryoin and Iceblick, which are based in Odesa.

The firms did not immediately reply to a CNBC request for comment, but Ingas and Cryoin have both ceased operations in recent weeks amid attacks from Russian forces, according to Reuters.

With world-leading Ukrainian firms having shuttered their operations, neon production is now set to fall off a cliff as the conflict drags on.

Based on estimates from consultancy firm Techcet, worldwide neon consumption for semiconductor production reached roughly 540 metric tons last year. Given Ukraine produces over half of the world’s neon, the figure could fall below 270 metric tons in 2022 if the nation’s neon producers remain shut.

“Of the materials used in chip-making that could see a hit to their supply from the Ukraine conflict, it is neon that poses the greatest potential challenge,” Hanbury told CNBC via email.
The ongoing global chip shortage has already wreaked havoc on supply chains and led to lengthy delays for products such as new cars and games consoles like the PlayStation 5.

A potential global neon shortage now threatens to make matters even worse.

    How neon is made

Neon is a byproduct of large-scale steel production.
It gets produced following the fractional distillation (a chemical separation process) of liquid air, which is the air that has been cooled to very low temperatures.

“Historically, up to 90% of the neon for the chip industry was produced as a by-product of Russian steel manufacturing and later refined by companies mainly based in Ukraine,” Hanbury said, pointing to firms like Cryoin, Ingas and UMG RT.

Alan Priestley, an analyst at Gartner, told CNBC that most major chip manufacturers have several months of neon in reserve, adding that it’s not a major issue for them yet.

Intel said it is monitoring the situation closely. “Intel has assessed the possible impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on its supply chain,” a spokesperson told CNBC.

The person added: “Intel’s strategy of having a diverse, global supply chain minimizes its risk from potential local interruptions. We continue to monitor the situation carefully.”

TSMC declined to comment and Samsung did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.

“Some smaller fabs with limited supply may be affected earlier,” Priestley said. Chip manufacturers are working with their supply chains to try to minimize the impacts, he added. A fab is a chip factory, where semiconductors are “fabricated.”

    Preparing for a neon shortage

The global semiconductor industry has been preparing for an event like this for years.

It took crucial steps to try to limit future risks associated with neon supplies in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

“Following the Crimean annexation, the chip sector acted to cut the need for use of neon in the manufacturing process,” Hanbury said. “At the same time, steps were taken to increase stocks of the gas at two points in the supply chain, so both gas suppliers and semiconductor makers each typically now have three to 12 months supply at hand.”

New suppliers outside of Ukraine and Russia were also put in place by semiconductor manufacturers, Hanbury added.
“We estimate only about two-fifths of the neon used in global semiconductor production today is sourced from Russia and Ukraine,” Hanbury added.

Dutch firm ASML, which makes the highly complex lithography machines used by the chip giants, reduced its reliance on neon sourced from Ukraine to approximately 20% of previous levels, Hanbury added.
A spokesperson for ASML told CNBC, “ASML recognizes the importance of being prepared in order to manage unplanned events including conflicts when they could impact our supply chain.”

They added: “We continue to closely monitor the status of the conflict and are currently investigating together with our suppliers what the impact (if any) would be and to what extent our suppliers can use alternative sources if necessary.”

    On the same topic:

    Neon

    "Production

Neon is produced from air in cryogenic air-separation plants. A gas-phase mixture mainly of nitrogen, neon, and helium is withdrawn from the main condenser at the top of the high-pressure air-separation column and fed to the bottom of a side column for rectification of the neon.[42] It can then be further purified from helium.

About 70% of global neon supply is produced in Ukraine[43] as a by-product of steel production in Russia.[44] As of 2020, the company Iceblick, with plants in Odessa and Moscow, supplies 65 per cent of the world's production of neon, as well as 15% of the krypton and xenon.[45][46]

Global neon prices jumped by about 600% after the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea,[47] spurring some chip manufacturers to start shifting away from Russian and Ukrainian suppliers[48] and toward suppliers in China.[46]

The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine also shut down two companies in Ukraine that produce about half of the global supply,[47] and is likely to exacerbate the COVID-19 chip shortage,[46][45] which may further shift neon production to China.
