Alternatively, he knows that, like Afghanistan, he's fighting a war he cannot win and is making a tactical withdrawal while he can still do it with some measure of dignity.

If he's played his part in starting peace talks, fair play.

But if he keeps supporting Assad at all costs, it will all have been a waste of time.

It's a bitter pill for you I know Harry... but actually I put the post up to highlight the damage inflicted on the illicit oil trade which has been fueling this conflict. The revenue has dried up, the party over, there's no point IS holding ground if there's nothing to get out of it. Of course we know about US/UK/NATO complicity, and this highlights their shortcomings... why didn't the billions of tax payers £/$'s achieve the same result, unless the Coalition are a) really very inept, or b) they lied to their populace about the real objectives in Syria... politically it's a very savvy move by Putin.
