Yeah, unfortunately it doesn't say any of that shit.

In fact it only mentions the SPS-49:

    Range 3 nmi (5.6 km) to 256 nmi (474 km) (AN/SPS-49A(V)1)
So where is your link that says they have radar that can spot a basketball on the opposite side of the planet?

    Ground-Based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance

Added: GEODSS has a bit of a clue in the acronym.....

    Ground-Based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance
Diego Garcia is a Naval Support base so its primary responsibility is for Feeding, Watering and Fueling a variety of US Navy transport.
You're either naive or as usual deliberately obtuse.
Diego Garcia supports and protects a vast US military complex operating out of there. It acts as a halfway point emergency landing strip It's also a GEODSS base.

GEODSS is perfectly capable of tracking aircraft, and may replace more obsolete parts of existing tracking systems.

So where does it say that ? It's for tracking satellites !

Or is that your own interpretation ?

GEODSS (in conjunction with other US Air Force optical tracking and identification systems, can track anything at low light levels, anywhere between earth and 30,000 miles out into space, from objects the size of a basketball to missiles, space junk re-entering Earth's atmosphere, aircraft or any unidentified flying objects either exoatmospheric, or for observing suborbital endoatmospheric targets such as aircraft.

    1. There is no OTH radar at Diego Garcia.
    2. GEODSS is an optical system with high-precision lenses which together with computer based sophisticated image processing makes it possible to see things far away. It is a telescope, not a radar. It can not see over the horizon.

My money's on the pilot committing pseudocide and living happily somewhere where he couldn't give two hoots.

I could be correct in my thinking.

No, SPS-49 is a long range radar.
After the horizon it can only detect targets high enough up, an OTH radar can detect ground targets on the other side of the horizon.

    You're bullshitting again.

The problem with your bullshitting is that nothing you post then has any credibility.

    SPS-49 has a range of <500Km.

GEODSS is for looking into Space which is why it's in the fucking name.

Why oh why do you bother with this incessant nonsense?

As an aside, I'm pretty sure a defence contractor like Boeing would have made sure whether or not Diego Garcia had any information about the planes whereabouts, since being able to prove the pilot ditched it would exonerate them from any claims over the safety of their aircraft.

Where do you think space is harry?

Try as you might harry, you won't convince anyone that US Diego Garcia is not surveillance capable.

What makes you think that GEODSS can't see what exists between ground and a point 30,000 miles out in space?

Do you think that there's a hard edged cut-off line between the endoatmosphere where aircraft normally operate and the exoatmosphere?

GEODSS telescopes operate in conjunction with low-light-level television, computers and the SP-49 radar system at Diego Garcia and similarly, at two other GEODSS facilities, one at Maui Island and the other in mainland USA.

GEODSS doesn't suddenly start registering moving objects on leaving earth's endoatmosphere, the system's continually scanning and recording any movement in its field of observation.

To make it simple for ya.

    Space.
"Very roughly, it starts about 100 kilometers above the Earth, but there is still part of the Earth's atmosphere even at this altitude. The atmosphere just gets less and less dense, and at these altitudes, the 'scale height' is several hundred kilometers, so that means the continued decrease in the atmosphere slows down significantly. Even at 1000 kilometers, there is a trace of the Earth's 'hydrogen cloud' as its outer atmosphere. It is called the geocorona. The above image was obtained from the NASA/ESA SOHO/SWAN
instrument. The NASA IMAGE satellite will also take pictures of the geocorona in real time as part of its study of the space environment. You can view these pictures as they arrive after May, 2000 at the IMAGE/POETRY page. Look for the images from the 'GEO' instrument.

The simplest and most direct explanation is that it was the segment of cargo which contained lithium batteries which caught fire....they were positioned just behind the electronics bay, fer chrissake !

And they are known for catching fire spontaneously.

No evidence of heat or fire on the wreckage found., and the plane must have landed relatively softly to wrench a slightly damaged flaperon off intact, more or less.

    What was in the cargo?

    Does anyone know?

I'm sure they do since the cargo has been discussed in this thread often enough.

Lots of mangosteens for a start.

What's your take? Killer mangonsteens? CIA mangosteens? Exploding mangosteens?
