What do you think of this email?

Here's an email I got today. I wonder what you think of it. I get these fairly regularly from a relative. Guess I should be waving the flag or else I will forget something.

    -

True story, check Snopes, Truth or fiction, fact finder.
If you don’t read any other email today this one is a “MUST READ”!

    Now SHE is a teacher!

In September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a History teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks in her classroom.

When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

'Ms. Cothren, where are our desks?'

She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.'

They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.'

    'No,' she said.

    'Maybe it's our behavior.'

She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.'

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. Kids called their parents to tell them what was happening and by early afternoon television news crews had started gathering at the school to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk-less classroom. Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he or she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.'

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniform, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. They went halfway around the world, giving up their education and interrupting their careers and families so you could have the freedom you have. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.'

By the way, this is a true story. And this teacher was awarded Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year for the State of Arkansas in 2006. She is the daughter of a WWII POW.

Do you think this email is worth passing along so others won't forget either, that the freedoms we have in this great country were earned by our U.S. Veterans? ..... I did.

    Blessings abound in our U.S.A.!

So sending troops around the world to invade countries and slaughter millions of innocent men women and children earns the right to sit at a desk. No wonder the country is in the mess it is with logic like this clown of a teacher.

I have a number of friends in the US who are retired military; only one is senile enough to send me crap like that. Normally, they end up with a waving flag and "If you're a REAL American, forward this to ten of your friends". Guess I don't qualify...I delete them as soon as I see what they are.

Of course it's bullshit. But it is indicative of the type of jingoistic crap with which Americans inundate each other all day long. There are a variety of 'touching' stories, all fictional. America has become a very sad place.

And, just when things were going well (other than a communist insurgency, militant muslims, poverty, flooding, etc), I read this morning that The Obamination is coming to the Phils next month. Like we don't already have enough corrupt politicians? Now we're importing?

Yep sorry Davis I wasn't wishing demise of those who served. In fact their stories and experience will hopefully inform the youth.
My poorly worded post meant once there hasn't been a war for a very long time.
However your conclusion correct it'll be a while yet

Maybe I'm just dense, but, even if some version of this tale is true (and it could be, given that it's Arkansas), I totally fail to understand why US troops fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Vietnam earned these kids the right to sit in those chairs and get an education. What does one have to do with the other? It makes no sense. When I was chest deep in a Vietnam rice paddy, I sure as hell wasn't thinking, "Wow. Glad I'm ducking these mortar rounds. Now little JimBob will get a desk."

Exactly, and if this is true is meant for nothing more than to brainwash the youth to be the next generation of war supporters!

From snopes, if I recall correctly, the class focusses on WW2 and Vietnam wars.

Personally (purely) there is no doubt in my mind that American entry into WW2 (however late, and however reluctantly initially) did serve to combat a great evil (for both the german and japanese theatres).

Vietnam is a slightly different kettle of fish to be fair.

One of the interesting little snippets that the more rabid anti-US seem to forget, is that, (broadly) America does not fight to conquor, but fights - in its own world vision - to free.

I think the idea is that Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq would have invaded the US if she hadn't go to war with them preventively. In this case these kids would not be free now, but exposed to propaganda and indoctrination.

Before E mail one would be unlucky to receive a "chain letter" it basically said that by copying and sending this letter to 20 other people( you had to pay postage) you would be lucky in life, but if you failed to forward this crap letter, you would die.
The same shit is permeated by E mail. Same type of threats, to force you to forward the shite that you did not want to receive in the first place.
If an E mail is clever enough you will want to share it. No need for threats.
Yes I get shit like this and I just delete it. I have noticed that they are getting less, maybe more folks are deleting them.
If you do not forward this a Thai spirit will kill you velly soon.

    Wrong.

Did you actually read the link you posted? Please dop, you'll find it bears little to no resemblance to the OP, with the exception of the missing school desks being returned mid History class by some vets.
