    Angry Bang Saen Racists

My wife and I have been living in Bang Saen for almost a year. We are both professionals and have lived in and visited many other countries in the region over the past 10 years. We have never experienced such racism, to extent where we have been told "This is Thailand go home..." and threatened with an iron bar and a bottle, simply for asking neighbors and their friends to be quiet at 12.30 and then at 3.30 in the morning.

So much for the land of smiles, it is more like the land deceitful smiles and outright racism. On the wall around the street there is even some graffiti reading "Asian Blood"

I do not believe this is typical of all Thais, other households in the street are very neighborly. It is like many other cultures a small minority. However there seems to be a tendency by others to turn a blind eye and not want to get involved, which only allows the racist chants to get louder and become mainstream

If this example is the level of young people in this university town then there is real concern for this country.

Largely derives from the current generation.
Among other negative and destructive character traits.

    ^^Yes it does.

About 8 years ago I found myself pissed and penniless at 2am in Bang Saen.

Obviously the only thing to do was to walk back to BKK - so I headed off.

I was stopped by a mum, her daughter and a newborn on a skoota who asked me where the fvck I was going.

    Bangkok I replied.

You know what, they told me to wait there while they dropped a couple off, and the girl came back and took me to a hotel - where she paid for the room and told the receptionist to call her when I got up. The next day she came with her boyfriend and took me to the bus station. There, they bought be a ticket back to BKK. They also gave me 1000bt so I had some money in my pocket.

When I got back to BKK and got myself sorted out, I called them from the bank (i'd taken their number and gotten the name of a bank they said they used) and put the teller on to get their AC number so I could repay them.

    They wouldn't hear of it.

You know what, they had an oldish pickup, boyfriend was obviously a mechanic (shit in the truck) and they gave me about 3000bt.

That must have easily been a weeks wages for one of them.

If you've been here a year, you should know the key to Thailand is tolerance.

I dont really think it could be called a university town. Why are you living around student housing in the first place? Due dligence is often needed when looking for a nice place to live in Thailand.

In all honesty I would not like to have been my neighbor while I went to university.

Spent a lot of time in Bangsean over the last 10 years never had or seen any problems,no racist remarks or graffiti heard or noticed. When Gert had a bad case of food poisoning there 6/7 years ago at 02:00 am we flagged down some car passing by and they took us to Chonburi hospital so she could see a doctor.Offered them money for inconvenience but declined.
I know there is Thai on Thai fighting every now and then but thats the whiskey they have been drinking all day causing the fights.

You should have gone and had a beer with them.

Telling drunk people what to do often doesn't work out too well.

On the "this is thailand go home"

Was it in English or Thai?

edit: seems that was another occasion.

Sounds like a case of bad neighbors and not necessarily racism.

Now there is a very strong cultural undercurrent of institutionalized xenophobia, and that's been going on for a very long time. Also bear in mind the school system in general is quite lacking.

The other aspect of the Thai personality in general is that they don't take criticism well, and recognize the distinct differences between the Thai Chinese ruling class and the country people from rural areas.

Being here only one year you aren't going to see all that yet.

Staying in Thailand long time it's advisable to learn the language a bit and that takes some time and isn't easy.

there is a distinct difference... in case you are...

    a) a single female traveller
    b) a non-thai couple
    c) a single male traveller
    d) a foreign/thai couple.

depending on who you are, the show run is entirely different...

    c) and d) can go to thailand... special show provided...

if you are an a) the thing is entirely different... until - some c) enters the place (as an example, a cafe)... then, from one second to the other the place "changes"...

if you are a) or b) you better dont go to thailand...
maybe 3 weeks, then change place... (city)

Can you try that one more time? Perhaps you understand it.

That sort of stuff can and does happen anywhere in the world. Happens quite a lot too.

You have to be careful where you choose to live, IMHO.

It's known as the Land of Smiles by sweet farangs that come over for a couple of weeks every year or two. I've heard it called many thing but rarely that by anyone who has lived here for a while.

As someone else posted your better bet would have been to bring along a few bottles and have a couple with them before politely backing off because you have a cnut of a migraine coming on.

30 years ago as a teenager from Brisbane (Aus), who would travel 100Km north to the coast to visit his grandmother and aunts and uncles, I would get heckled on the street by locals who called me a 'Brisso'. Some wanted to get physical about it.

With hindsight they were locals who couldn't cope with the social and economic changes that were going on.

Glad I wasn't living there at the time. I coould always go home.

Well, you deserve derision simply due to the fact of being a banana-bender

Yes....but because this sorted negativity happened here automatically qualifies the accusers of being racists, xenophobic, etc.

How did you go about asking them to turn it down? Did you rock on up with an angry face and demeaning voice?
