give her a pat on the back too.
You're joking, right? "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

So then if the only weaponry we had were shovels the annual death toll would remain the same? Say, do you want to invest in some prime Florida real estate? It's not swampland, honest!

    Isn't he in jail?

Likely he has more interesting things to do than spending 24/7 on TD.

I still pop in from time to time, it's amusing to see how our resident knobjokeys Peewee and Willy, tireless and relentless in their pursuit of douchebagery.

Woman killed by 4-year-old in Tennessee cookout

(CNN) -- A pistol in the hands of a 4-year-old boy went off during a weekend cookout, killing the wife of a Tennessee sheriff's deputy who was showing his guns to a relative, state police said Monday.
No one saw the boy pick up the weapon before the shooting, which occurred Saturday night in Lebanon, east of Nashville, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said. The single shot killed 47-year-old Josephine Fanning, the wife of Wilson County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Fanning.
The couple were hosting family and friends at their house when Daniel Fanning and a relative went into a bedroom to check out some of Fanning's guns, Helm said. Josephine Fanning and the boy walked into the room later, and at some point the boy picked the loaded pistol up off the bed.
Helm said she wasn't sure of the relationship between the boy and the Fannings. The TBI, which investigates incidents involving law enforcement officers, is still conducting its probe, and no charges have been filed.
The gun involved was Fanning's personal weapon, not his service pistol, she said.

President Obama: “Right now, 90 percent of Americans — 90 percent — support background checks that will keep criminals and people who have been found to be a danger to themselves or others from buying a gun. More than 80 percent of Republicans agree. More than 80 percent of gun owners agree.”

.... “There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t get this done.”

He sounds nice, but speaks bullshit. Public opinion doesn't matter to Congress, only their funders matter. So the rather innsipid 'gun control' proposals are being dismembered before our eyes. An assault weapons ban is off the table, and it appears that the magazine limitation thing is a goner too. The background check proposals will probably be rendered castrato by not being applied to private sales. If they reach the House at all.

Forget guns- the real Issue here is whether the USA can still credibly claim to be a Democracy.

Never mind the USA, lets start at home first , Can the Country we have both chosen to live in credibly claim its a true democracy? IMHO for anyone to claim it is is akin to saying Attila the Hun was the worlds first democratic leader!

Two senators strike bipartisan 'deal' on gun checks

Senator Joe Manchin: "We have common sense and we have gun sense"

Two US senators have brokered a bipartisan deal to expand background checks on gun buyers, boosting White House hopes for a firearms control law.

Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat, and Senator Pat Toomey, a Republican, unveiled their plans in Washington DC.

The proposal would expand criminal background checks for buyers to include gun shows and online sales.

President Barack Obama has been calling for gun controls since a massacre at a school in Connecticut in December.

"Today is just the start of a healthy debate that must end with the Senate and House hopefully passing these common sense measures and the president signing them into law," Sen Manchin told reporters on Wednesday.

    'Not a cure-all'

He said Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid had assured them their plan would be considered as the first amendment to a wider bill.

On Thursday, the Senate plans to vote on whether to begin debate on Democratic-led legislation that would expand background checks to virtually all gun sales, make gun-trafficking a felony, and boost funding for school safety.

Michelle Obama: "Are we truly meeting our obligations to our children?"

The Manchin-Toomey plan is stricter than the current law, which requires checks only when guns are bought through a licensed dealer and thus exempts private sales, many sales at gun shows, and some online sales. But it is viewed as narrower than congressional Democrats' proposals.

Sales among friends or family members would be exempt from the background-check requirement, under the two senators' proposal.

Sen Toomey, a Republican from Pennsylvania, said he did not believe expanding background checks to block illegal buyers amounted to gun control.

"[Checks] are not a cure-all, but they can be helpful," the senator said, adding that 1.8 million firearms sales have been blocked by the current system.

The plan has also won the backing of New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, who attempted to broker an earlier compromise, and of a group lobbying for stricter gun controls founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"Our bipartisan coalition of more than 900 mayors strongly supports this bill," Mr Bloomberg, an independent, said in a statement.

    Michelle Obama in Chicago

Also in the agreement is a plan to establish a federal commission on mass violence that would seek the expertise of those in the fields of mental health, school safety, firearms and entertainment.

Dan Baum: "I am a Jewish, liberal Democrat and also a gun guy"

The Senate's Democratic leadership believes it now has enough Republican support to thwart a conservative attempt to stop the bill even being considered on the floor of the chamber.

In a statement, the National Rifle Association said that more background checks "will not prevent the next shooting, will not solve violent crime and will not keep our kids safe in schools".

Sen Manchin said he and Sen Toomey had been in touch with multiple groups during their discussions, including the NRA.

And a White House spokesman confirmed that Mr Obama had called negotiators from both parties on Tuesday.

The White House will continue its campaign on Wednesday as First Lady Michelle Obama visits a Chicago high school where 29 current or former students have been shot in the past year.

Relatives of those killed in the December school massacre at Newtown, Connecticut, lobbied lawmakers on Tuesday. The family members were whisked to Washington by Mr Obama aboard Air Force One.

"People should listen to what we have to say and move the debate forward," said Mark Barden, who lost his seven-year-old son, Daniel at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"It's not just about our tragedy. Lots of kids are killed every day in this nation. We have to help lead the change."

White House calls for a ban on assault weapons and a limit on the capacity of ammunition magazines have not gained traction in Congress.

For how much longer is this debate likely to last? It is quite astonishing to find politicians and ordinary people contesting a move to strenghten public and especially school children's safety. A huge black mark against US society and the rights of decent, law abiding citizens.

Missouri’s Confidential Gun Owner Files Handed Over to Feds

    Thursday, 11 Apr 2013 04:46 PM
    By Bill Hoffmann

Despite a law that guarantees the names of concealed weapon permit holders in Missouri will be kept confidential,
the entire list was twice turned over to federal authorities, Sen. Kurt Schaefer says.

The Republican lawmaker says the Missouri State Highway Patrol asked for and received the list from the state Division of Motor Vehicle and Driver Licensing. It was then sent to the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General.

“When they turn over the entire list of concealed carry holders in the state of Missouri to the federal government, where is it going?” Schaefer told the Columbia Daily Tribune.

“I want to know who all was involved in this transaction because if this is just some phone call saying give me the list of all concealed carry holders, how did the person at the patrol who fulfilled that request know who was at the other end of the phone?

“How did they know where to send it? How did they know what it was being used for?”

Capt. Tim Hull told the newspaper the lists were “provided to law enforcement for law enforcement investigative purposes.’’

But under Missouri law, the names of concealed weapon permit holders — which are stored in driver’s license records — are confidential.

“Apparently from what I understand, they wanted to match up anyone who had a mental diagnosis or disability with also having a concealed carry license,” Schaefer said. “What I am told is there is no written request for that information.”

He said he intends to ask Missouri State Highway Patrol Col. Ron Replogle for full details of the list handover at a state appropriations committee hearing on the patrol's budget.

That was certainly an effective ploy to heighten the emotion level.
Get ready for a giant round of emotional knee-jerk.
Too bad none of the new proposals could've prevented this horrible tragedy.

    I have my doubts.

It seems far more likely to me that there has been some horseplay, things got out of hand, and someone got shot. Blame it on the kid and everyone gets off Scot free.

It would be interesting to know the outcome of this.

It would be a much better situation than allowing the kids to be prey for deranged psychotics and relying on an already overgrown government to provide halfwitted uneducated rentacops for protection.

A properly armed and trained citizen/educator would have likely stopped Columbine, Aurora and Sandy Hook. Armed citizens stop and deter crime everyday.
Disarming law abiding citizens serves to embolden criminals and psycho's.

Indeed so inclickting knee-jerk gun control is going to accomplish this?
