I've just been reading a travellers blog at (sorry I can't post
links yet, I'll have to replace dots with asterisks)
www*travelblog*org/Asia/Thailand/Chiang-Rai/blog-122338.html
She talks about an organisation called "Children of the Golden Triangle",
it appears to be some kind of Christian Charity where sponsors pay
$30/Month for the care of abandoned or orphaned hill tribe children.
From the blog it seems that the place is more like a labour camp run
for the benefit and profit of the organisers and volunteers. While none
of what she says is actually horrifying it is deeply disturbing.
I don't know anything about this organisation aside from a few things I
Googled this morning. Has anybody here heard about this group?
Is the negative view of them in the blog above justified or just a
misunderstanding?
I've put this in the issues forum because I've noticed this kind of thing
in other countries. Not uniquely, but predominantly, among religious
charities. I've met a lot of decent, caring charity workers but I've also
met a lot who could only be described, charitably, as exploiters. Is this
other peoples experience too?
