ANTI-whaling activists say one of their vessels and a Japanese whaling ship have collided near the Ross Sea, sparking a distress call from the Japanese crew.
A statement from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said the whaling vessel, the Kaiko Maru, issued the distress call, which the group had acknowledged, about 3.20pm today.
Sea Shepherd leader Captain Paul Watson said the confrontation occurred when the conservation group's vessels, the Robert Hunter and the Farley Mowat, caught the Japanese ship bearing down on a pod of whales.
"At one point the Kaiko Maru turned to starboard and struck the Robert Hunter," Sea Shepherd said in a statement.
"The Kaiko Maru has issued a distress signal. We have acknowledged this distress signal but they refuse to say what distress they are in."

The Japs deserve everything they get - they simply ignore CITES bans on international whaling and claim it's all for research. Of course, everyone knows that's just crap and there are many restaurants in Japan now trying to sell whale burgers as a healthy alternative to other junk food.
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.

i'm not certain that's exactly the case, the greenies had already issued a public statement that they would ram the jap boats, under maritime law the Japanese boat may have had right of way and reasonably expect the other boat to bear away....

If they can sustainably hunt certain species of whales, is there any reason they should not??

I think that the Green assholes are dead wrong and should be responsible for any damage occurred by the vessels engaged in fishing as long as the signals displayed send the clear message that they are so engaged and doing what is legal in the international rules of the road.
Those signals determine which vessel is Burdened and which is Privileged, no matter even if what they are doing is actually illegal, has nothing to do with who has rights of way.

If found at fault, the green vessels licensed masters should lose their licenses and serve time in an international jail.

It is no difference than being on a hyway and using your civilian car to ram someone for infractions of laws,, just not done.

It looks like someone sideswiping your car and then them going off into the ditch would be a better analogy. Guess the Greens were shadowing a little too close for comfort and the whalekillers got nervous, som nam na.
