Given that it is supposed to be set in a mixed boarding school JK Rowling leaves a huge gap by not discussing sex. However lots of other writers do .....

This is from the article quoted in the NY Times:
"Harry Potter, probably unintentionally, thus appears as a summary of the social and educational aims of neoliberal capitalism. Like Orwellian totalitarianism, this capitalism tries to fashion not only the real world, but also the imagination of consumer-citizens. The underlying message to young fans is this: You can imagine as many fictional worlds, parallel universes or educational systems as you want, they will still all be regulated by the laws of the market. Given the success of the Harry Potter series, several generations of young people will be indelibly marked by this lesson."
It's a Fu**ing kid's book about magic. That's all!!! JK Rowling hasn't the wit to write anything deeper. Even to dare to use Orwell in the same article is an insult to Orwell's genius. 'Several generations of young people will be indelibly marked by this lesson' - give me a break. Several generations of young children are doomed to a life of meaningless existence governed entirely by how fast their internet connection is. Potter is just more throwaway stuff, another example of the impermanancy of youth culture. Read the book, see the film, then go back to your computer and kill a few more aliens.
Whatever next - the corrupting neo-facism of Dr Seuss?
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.
Why slag off JK Rowling???? Bit odd.

But I fail to see what Harry Potter got to do with capitalist markets. There is far too much being read into this, just because it's so popular. H.P. has been denounced as promoting witchcraft as well by some concerned Christians.
You gotta laugh and love it!
