Adds insult to injury IMHO, but what do you boys think? The Imam says it will be a "cultural" centre open to all but the building now standing is already being used as a muslim prayer space.

I just think this move is an affront. I also heard this imam's org has some bad ties which happen to be funding part of this. I'll dig up some research on that.
I don't understand a Mosque or any religious building near the WTC. But a mosque? Not good IMO, as the hijackers used Islam as the main reason IMO, with political reasons seemingly second.

Did NYC restrict any Catholic churches from operating in close proximity of schools subsequent to the child abuse? If the muslim center is able to meet the building code requirement, then it has every legal right to be there. If and when it is taken over by Pakistani / Yemeni/ Saudi Arabian nutters, then by all means bulldoze it down. However, there are a great many non violent muslims in NYC that are loyal Americans that might benefit from the center.

1st Amendment applies to all, not just those that people don't like. There is a reason that the USA is the only country designed around the ideas of the Enlightenment.
Personally I'd like to see the tax status of all religious institutions reset to be compatible with their clear attempts to make a profit and influence politics and public opinion.

So if they want a mosque somewehere near the 9/11 site, I say let them if it complies with planning considerations and local laws. Why not acknowledge the multi-racial makeup of US society? And the fact the the terrorists don't seem to care if they kill Muslims, Christians, Jedi-Knights and anyone else all at once.
I could certainly live without their yodeling 5 times a day if I was working down there.

I worked in the World Financial Centre for a while (which is next to the ex-WTC) and didn't even know Park Place, where this old decrepit garment factory is that they want to turn into whatever, even existed. It comes off Broadway, opposite City Hall. No longer the financial district.
