    Vat Ist Der Yerman drunken?

Okay, I don't know German. I came across a clip about German expats in the Phillipines. In the clip at about 1 hour 17 minutes the German guy goes to some house to buy some sort of alcoholic concoction. He gets his multi-gallon contained filled then goes home where it seems that everyone is happy to drink it. What is that? Is it made from coconut tree juice?

It's made from a coconut tree but not from cocnuts. If you watch it, they get a juice or something from the top of the tree in a similar way to rubber tapping in that they attach a bucket to catch drippings. I've never seen this in Thailand. You'd think the Thais would have figured out this drink with so many people interested in drinking here.

It's a long video so I have not seen it yet but I will.

It's called Tuba. Very widely used in the Philippines, at least it was, not sure about now. Juices from the tree drip into a container. It is already fermented when it is picked from the tree, ready to drink.

Most of the video is just about the expats life in the Phillippines. The part with the jungle juice is at the very end (140) and only runs about 2-3 minutes.

How can you have the patience to watch a video in a language you don't understand for 1 hour 17 minutes+? When I registered that Dirk lived in Tacloban, I looked up if there's an update on him. He survived Haiyan severly injured, but lost everything, friends, home, car, boat. It's a bleak account he had to tell of survivors killing each other for food and fuel, but also helpfulness of others after he ferried to Mindanao, it's in German.

    Palm Wine.

The sap is extracted and collected by a tapper. Typically the sap is collected from the cut flower of the palm tree. A container is fastened to the flower stump to collect the sap. The white liquid that initially collects tends to be very sweet and non-alcoholic before it is fermented. An alternate method is the felling of the entire tree. Where this is practiced, a fire is sometimes lit at the cut end to facilitate the collection of sap. Palm wine tapping is mentioned in the novel Things Fall Apart by the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe and is central to the plot of the groundbreaking novel The Palm Wine Drinkard by Nigerian author Amos Tutuola.
In parts of India, the unfermented sap is called neera (padaneer in Tamil Nadu) and is refrigerated, stored and distributed by semi-government agencies. A little lime is added to the sap to prevent it from fermenting. Neera is said to contain many nutrients including potash. Palm sap begins fermenting immediately after collection, due to natural yeasts in the pores of pot and air (often spurred by residual yeast left in the collecting container). Within two hours, fermentation yields an aromatic wine of up to 4% alcohol content, mildly intoxicating and sweet. The wine may be allowed to ferment longer, up to a day, to yield a stronger, more sour and acidic taste, which some people prefer. Longer fermentation produces vinegar instead of stronger wine.[5]

I have heard from friends that Palm Wine - Tuba is really only the cheapest way to get drunk. If they can afford it they prefer rum or beer.

    After tasting it I concur.

I dont know what this guy`s been drinking but Tuba never killed anyone..
    It just aint strong enough.
The old school Filipino`s distil it a couple of times and flavour it for a year or so with local fruits like Jack fruit etc..Its then called Lambanog..
Drink enough of that for enough years and it`ll do what any high % spirit would do....Eventually.
You have to be careful where you buy Lambanog as there are faster ways of making partially fake alcohol products, specially when mass produced by Chinese businessmen!

Just in case somebody is interested in the story of that guy I will write a short recap. I watched the video and read the article.

He was running a bar in Germany. A 7 day a week 16 hour job and he liked it. Then he got first a stroke and a short time later was diagnosed with cancer. He recovered from both but no longer felt up to his old work schedule.

So he sold his bar and decided to go to the Philippines for a more relaxed lifestyle. He looked into running a bar again but found out that it would bring in too little money to be worth it.
His savings were never very big. The world financial crisis and the drop of the Euro reduced it further. Still a lot more than the average Filipino but he had to settle into a simple lifestyle and enjoys that too.
First he tried to find a partner closer to his own age but then settled for a 21 year old with a small child. There are some doubts in the back of his mind but he does love her and she is a great partner for him, so he is happy that way. He is supporting her studying to become a teacher. I guess the moment of truth will come when she is receiving a teachers salary.

That was the state before the typhoon struck. He had built a small and simple house in a village outside Tacloban. The typhoon first destroyed the tree plantations around his place and the less strong houses of the neighbors. He was staying inside the bathroom of his house with many of his neighbours because that was the strongest part of the building during the later part of the Typhoon. When the water started rising inside a little girl aske if they are all going to die and he felt the same but the walls of that part of the house did not collapse and the water did not rise too high.

He looted food from a store and later drove with his heavily damaged car to the south and reached Mindanao to get money and food as the local ATMs don't work. There his foot was operated for a broken bone and a few broken ribs treated. The mechanic repairaing his car could not believe that the damaged car had made the trip.

The hospital wanted to keep him but he planned to get back with money and start rebuilding. He has no intention to leave. The trip back with money in his pocket may be dangerous but he was determined. At that point the article ended.

It is called sour toddy here in the Pacific islands, the unfermented/non-alcoholic toddy is great, the sour stuff will get one wasted in no time and leave you with a hangover from hell.

It's called toddy in Malaysia too- introduced by Indians working in the plantations, so quite likely the same story in the Pacific. The Malaysian toddy houses were quite fun, if you like being surrounded by drunks in a smelly, tumbledown shack. Jeez those places reeked.

Some more details, he lost half his lung in an accident earlier in life, but keeps smoking. I like that. He goes on and on how the devaluation of the Euro to the Peso would force him to work again, this is actually not the reason, but he is in denial to see the real one. He fell in the third-world trap with his big good heart, paying food and accomodation for his young girlfriend, her kid, and family of about 10. Between the small appartment and his own home, he rented a huge 300 sqm house. I reckon that her family moved in swiftly, and the two pigs he bought for them were tethered to his fence even though the story doesn't mention it. It's indicated that he owned the several thousand palm trees around his own home and planned to make a living from them, the storm flattened them all but 30. He set up a facebook page asking for donations, being a minor celebrity I trust they are coming in, and his money worries are over.
