Thread: Howdy, all...

Finally got off my lazy ass and decided to post a "Welcome me too!" thread. Real name is Thomas. Short story about me: met my wife through the internet about 3 years ago, decided to get married, managed to make it through visa hell resulting in a permanent residence card for her here in the US. We started a house building project on some land owned by her parents about a year ago (still working on a final design for the house...this is a big reason why I joined the forums due to the obvious experience of some posters regarding house construction in Thailand). Expecting a bouncing bundle of joy any time now in the next two weeks. I'm a computer tech with many long years of experience (hoping to use that knowledge once I move to Thailand). Hoping to work here for about 5-10 more years and settle in Issan after that. Going through withdrawals since it's next to impossible to make real Thai food here in the States (I'm a cook as a hobbyist and grow all my own herbs, vegetables, etc.) Five forum bucks for the person who guesses what my avatar is all about

What part of the states you from? Living in the SF bay area I never had a problem finding any ingredients I needed. Did grow my own grapow though..

We're currently living in OR but will likely move to CA once our son is born and taken to Thailand to stay with my wife's family. I've been able to grow Siam Queen basil and Thai chilis quite well here but not much luck with other things (perhaps due to the weather). Between the shallots, cherry tomatoes, and chilis (now on their second strain...I took seed from last year's chilis and started another crop along with some habernaros nearyby...damn, that was some a-spicy-a-peppa) I can almost make som tom here without having to go to the grocery for papaya. The lack of Thai stores here doesn't help either. I suppose what I really meant was not having the more intimate ingredients such as real fish sauce, bamboo shoots, coriander root, etc. Tried growing some lemon grass last year but wasn't real successful with it (stuff is up to $4.00 a pound up here now). Come to think of it I'm really missing the Sri Racha pinapple about now.

Yes (though some people do in fact mix alcohol with the chemical described in the avatar...you really shouldn't)

Nah, fish sauce would be far too complex to break down into a single molecule called 'fish sauce.' But you mentioned rice and chilies and I said 'close.' Someone else mentioned rice but I didn't say 'close.'
