Hello
I am new here, I was wondering if anybody knew the pitfalls of boat ownership in the Rayong/Pattaya area.
I will be starting an Ex Pat contract in the area in August and would like to buy myself a small fishing boat
Thanks in advance![]()

Welcome.
Sorry, I know fuck all about boats, and actually hate the bloody things.![]()
If you like fishing for used condoms you'll have a whale of a time !

Careful of the Thai competition.

I will only be doing a little fishing for myself and maybe taking a couple of mates out occasionally. Will the locals object?
I have searched the net and I cannot find anything about mooring fees or slipways in the area. Are there any Farang boat owners out there?
Welcome aboard. But sorry, don't know owt about boats.
Not a boat owner but have some friends in the area that are. I believe they have berths at :: OCEAN MARINA REGATTA ::
Welcome to TD.
Several people have boats here. I'm told that, if you are looking to charter your boat, Ko Chang is more lucrative.
Thanks Sabang
I will not be looking to charter it, I just want a smallish boat (about 5-7 Metres) that I can use myself for fishing and the occasional weekend trip.
I used to have a boat in the UK but got pissed off with having to pay through the nose for mooring fees
Sorry Norton, mised your reply, will check it out now
Rather than berth it, consider keeping it at home and just launch at a boat ramp when you use.Originally Posted by darksider

Unfortunately I do not have a choice where I will be living, the free housing that is part of the contract in in a compound just outside Rayong
I was hoping that moorings in the area would be cheap, so that I could nip out for a couple of hours fishing after work and not have all the hassle of towing, launching and retrieving the boat.
The two best things about owning a boat are the day you buy it, and the day you sell it. Now I am pretty sure that's a famous quote.
I will always regret the day I sold my last boat, mooring charges just got too much and the weather over here meant that I could hardly ever use it.

Better to charter a boat complete with all fishing gear and bait.Cost is around 6/7000 bht for a 12 hour day. Very hard to find good fishing areas without local knowledge
Most of the fun of fishing is to find the good areas and tactics yourself
If I wanted big bags every time, I would go to one of the private lakes where they overstock and keep the fish hungry
My first fishing trip in Thailand was on this big massive boat, had quite a few berths and we left Royal Varuna Yacht Club and headed for Koh Larn area, it was a friend of mines boat, could sleep about 10 in the berths, a few others in the dining area, damn I thought this was going to be good, then he turned on this fish finder machine that does something under the boat to see how many how big and how deep the fish are, spoiled it a bit for me that did![]()
slip ways on the beaches at Ban Chang. Not much in the way of moorings. No marinas that I know of but a bit of a harbour at Sattahip.
If it's on a trailer you'd have no problem launching.
Do the slipways charge much?

lots of theft from boats on koh chang, the english family that set up down there with the catamaran had no end of trouble, bits going missing, sabotage that kinda stuff, think they were a year behind or something, then when they started, a big chain hotel went and got themselves a catamaran !!piracy!!
