    freshy

    Hi everybody!

Yup you guessed it, I am new here.

Actually I am conducting a survey for a master's degree. The study subjects are you people, yes the expats living in Thailand ;-)
(I need to add that I live in Thailand myself right now)

FYI I am investigating how people, in particularly expats living in Thailand call abroad (for example to family and friends in their home country.
However, I will not be posting the link yet as I am so fresh on this forum I haven't even reached link-posting status -for which you need a massive 5 posts.

Anyway, my survey and the search for cooperating expats has brought me to a number of forums, websites and places (I will not elaborate), which was an interesting experience by itself. This way I end up discovering cool forums, sites and people...

The Teakdoor forum looks 'different'. Different is good.
I do wonder where the name Teakdoor.com comes from though (ok, I bet it is explained somewhere and I didn't see it).

    //VoIP//

ps. so far this place looks cool, except for the slightly irritating feature being Bart Simpson constantly showing his bum under the message box when you post

I think it is an interesting topic "to VoIP or not to VoIP", hence I chose it for my thesis.

There are a lot of pro but also con arguments and issues.
And there is surprisingly few research available on consumer VoIP adoption, most research is concentrated around business applications.

    I use Skype as well
Being able to send chat messages is a big bonus as I don't like long conversations.
    Sending files is sometimes useful

    Welcome on the board.

BTW, if you'll conduct any study about expats's mental deseases you could PM Blackgang, Texpat and Boon Mee. They will be some interesting subjects of observation. But beware, they could bite.

Some female subject are available as well: Jet Gorgon and Momoxx.

I use Skype. The quality of the connection is variable and the disconnections annoying. It seems that even a good connection deteriorates during a long conversation.

While I was in England I could call landlines and mobiles in Thailand for 1p per minute using 18185.

    Smile Newbie and VOIP

Yeah, I'm new here too,,,,,,,,,registered today.

I will be viewing the construction threads mostly as I will be building next year I hope,,,,,,,,,as for phone services I have been using Skype for international calls and Yahoo Messenger for PC to PC stuff,,,,,,,,,but since I changed to using a Hutch data service the Skype system does not like the high latency and the calls don't work so good. PC to PC is marginal at best

If you take the time to do the job right the first time you won't need to "find" the time to go back a second time

I live in Isaan. Use two tin cans connected via high speed string. On clear days use smoke signals or signal flags. When all else fails I hijack the fruit vendors truck and directly broadcast overseas calls.

    Welcome aboard.

Another useful tip is to get your wife to pass a verbal message when she's angry - international calls for free!

OK now that everybody is warmed up, I will reveal the link to the actual survey:

    The link to the Survey

The survey investigates if you use Internet telephony or non-Internet telephony for international communication, and also checks the attitude towards internet telephony (for users and non users). It takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

Smoke signal communication (notoriously unreliable in the rainy season, at night or during periods of heavy wind),
tin cans connected via a string and african tam-tam drums are all excluded from the survey

No, it is not a scam, I am not trying to sell anything, do not spread viruses via my survey, and this has nothing to do with Limewire the filesharing software -like some users seem to think- (the link contains the word LimeSURVEY which is the free opensource survey software I used to set it up -limesurvey.org)

I thank all of you for your help!!!

The outcome of the research will be published June 15th,
so beware, the mysteries of them' expats international phone habits will be revealed soon...
