It's the name of a character from a book I read recently couldn't think of anything clever or original, looked at my bookshelf while registering and thought that will do.

Might have been the Bible.

I think Ciaphas Cain is the hero.
The author was Sandy Mitchell

You're right it's Ciaphas Cain, I used to play warhammer 40k when I was a kid and a couple of years ago I popped into a gamesworkshop out of curiosity, brought a couple of books and have been hooked ever since.
