New member soon arriving from Lombok

    Hi,
My wife Evey and I will be arriving in Jomtien in 6 weeks, hoping to stay long term. We are both from the UK but have been living in Lombok, Indonesia for the last 2 and a half years. Looking forward to a change of lifestyle.....new challenges I'm sure, but we have a few friends settled in the area already which i hope will ease our transition.
Planning to come in on a tourist visa before converting to a retirement visa. Whatever the process throws at us surely cant be worse than we have experienced here in Indonesia! No doubt we will seek advice from this group in the not too distant future.
    Regards,
    Oz

Wow, what made you decide on Jomtien instead of Lombok? Rather big change.

Kingwilly: we've had enough of the difficult lifestyle living on the edge of the jungle here, no water supply for 5 months and as an example 4 seperate power cuts last night. Have to leave Lombok to do any proper shopping. .
Have enjoyed visiting Jomtien previously.....so here goes!

    Why Jomtien?

I would look at living 10-15 minutes drive from there and on the semi rural east Pattaya side of Sukhumvit.

Virtually no traffic jams, quite with heaps of bars and restaurants and not far from the busy city if you need to go there.

    And welcome.

Jomtien is a pale imitation of Pattaya but growing evermore and has been the location for the development of ghastly projects looking to capitalise on the Russian presence.
Given your previous rural location, one assumes you are not drawn by quasi - urban ephemera but are now simply looking for more convenience in an environment still offering some tranquility.

Might I suggest you explore Ban Chang a bit further south before committing yourself. It has three very pleasant beaches, a selection of decent estates housing many farang and middle class Thai and the town itself sells most things you may need and has a small street with a modicum of bars and, importantly, a couple of good farang bar/restaurants to get your fix of European food.

A good compromise unless of course you want to be in the thick of things.

Thanks all for the welcome and advice. We have friends in Jomtien thus our choice for relocation. We dont intend to put down any roots anywhere until we are sure we are where we can be happy.

I'm going to visit a guy in Huay Yai tomorrow. He at first said "call me if I'm not at home. I'll be on the beach and will be there is 20 mins".

Welcome to TD, and all the best here in Thailand Oz. Many options- don't tie yourselves to one place too quickly. Anyway, it's certainly not Lombok.

The only good thing about thailand compared to bali/lombok....is the visa situation....so that will be the least of your worries.........the other thing is that living in indo for awhile is a good intro, starter like course before moving up a notch or 3 in the nasty stakes

Very wise words and this mistake is made by many who come to Thailand. Rent for a year or two after looking around and as you said, no roots until you are where you can be happy.

    Welcome.
